Sorry if I've missed it, I know we had offered Paul Robinson a contract for the upcoming season but have yet heard nothing regarding him actually signing the offered contract.
As he left the club, am I right to presume he won't have returned for pre-season.

Nothing been said so I'm guessing he hasn't signed a new deal although he could still do. I know Dyche was very keen to keep him. Tom Heaton has also said how much he's benefited from Robinson being with us.

Think we've all noticed the influence he's had in Tom taking free kicks anywhere within our half

It's certainly not good news when the people who matter want him to stay. He knows he's third choice now so unlikely to get a game and maybe that's why he's not signed.

Take it this is new for this season? Certainly wasn't third choice last season when Heaton was injured or was Pope also injured at the same time meaning Robinson played?

he is valued because of his vast experience and abilities, played at highest level therefore seen as beneficial if called upon.

No. Pope became number two last season and was on the bench rather than Robinson for last couple of months. Robinson was working with some of the staff and the analysts at the back of the Longside during games.

Dyche said that the plan was always to gradually bring Pope upto 2nd choice. showed that when he was named on the bench instead of Robinson for the last few games of the season.

That clears it up cheers CT.
How old is Robinson now 38/39? He might fancy another season or 2 playing but would be good if we got him on some coaching capacity. From him working with the analysts and how he has helped Heaton, he would be a good appointment.

38 in October, so still 37. Not so old for a keeper.

I think the situation is he still wants to play. I suspect he could still sign if he doesn't find a playing deal elsewhere.

benefit from. Keep him if poss.

We have some very promising young goalkeepers, and a very good goalkeeping coach.
In reality, Robinson won't get to play much next season. If he wants to play I'm sure he'll find a club. But i can see why SD would like him to stay, great cover and a wealth of experience to hand on.

Maybe we could play him in front of the back four?

We already have a goalkeeping coach, completely unnecessary to have Robinson hanging around blocking the development of our young keepers.

The good old anchor role. It reminds me of an argument I once had with somebody.
Basically, he said the one who plays infront of the defence and behind the midfield is the sweeper. I said, no - the sweeper plays behind the defence - hence the term... they 'sweep up'. He wouldn't have it. It was about 10 years ago when I didn't have a phone to look up Google to prove him wrong. Thank the lord for Google!

Isn't that the whole idea of being a coach? To help develop the young keepers.

Maybe a middle ground can be found - new contract and short loans locally to keep his eye in while splitting his training between the two. Sure we had a similar deal in the past with us benefitting from the loan in the past.

Think about it - we need a 3rd choice anyway, so why not let it be someone who can also coach?

Because we already have Billy Mercer as a goalkeeping coach don't we? We may as well do away with the youth team if we're going to have a past it 40 year old as our 3rd choice keeper.

We do have the highly rated Billy Mercer.
Our fourth choice 'keeper is Connor Mitchell, I think he plays for Ireland's U21s. He is one player who really could do with a season's loan at a reasonable level, but with us entering a new under 23 league we may need to keep him.

He's 37! What is it with people on here making up the age of players? It's not hard to check.

No. We need 3 goalkeepers. Pope is what.. 25? So he has the potential to replace Heaton. Now, the 3rd choice will rarely get game time... hopefully he'll not play at all this season. So that can either be a youngster (around 17-18), or someone like Robinson.
Now, if Pope was 32, I'd agree - that we need someone a lot younger, but we're fine.

Pope's 34 and Heaton is 47 so both are getting on a bit.

Perhaps someone at the top needs to tell Dyche he has it all wrong then (strange as it may seem)

If Dyche doesn't trust our youth team keeper to even be third choice and occasionally sit on the bench not much point in them being at the club. Must be pretty disheartening to the younger lads.

I do wonder how they expect youth teamers to gain the sort of exp[erience needed. However, Mitchell is included in the PL squad, so they must rate him

If I had trust in my youth team keeper, do you know what I'd do? I'd send him out on loan to give him as much first team action as possible, with the agreement that he can come back whenever we need him.

I'm sure it's nice having him around, but you can't begrudge someone for keeping his options open if he feels he has more to offer elsewhere.

Those saying Robinson shouldn't be 3rd choice and is blocking our young goalkeepers ask yourself, If push came to shove and we needed to put our 3rd choice goalkeeper in for a game or 2 for whatever reason who would prefer to be that 3rd choice a 18-21 yr old with none or very little league experience or a 37yr old former England no1 with years of experience at the top level of English football. If we can keep him its a no brainer he stays and is no 3 while also helping coach and passing on a wealth of experience not only to our youngsters but also to the No1 and No2 keepers.

I was searching for exactly this point. I noticed Conor Mitchell was in Ireland with the first team. Invaluable experience for him I'd expect. It's such a premium position that at Premier League level we'd be hard pushed to find a quality keeper willing to bench warm and/or even fight it out for a place on said bench with Pope. It may be that we're considering Mitchell as third choice, if he's up to standard.

I've seen an old, largeish, greying bloke on the pictures from Ireland, not sure if it's Robinson or the old lad from Stoke.

It's good for Conor working with the first team, he'll gain so much from being alongside an international goalkeeper. He's just 21 with limited experience though but if he went out on loan it would leave us with the dilemma of finding another third choice goalkeeper. Since he moved on from the youth team, I've seen little of him with not many public games for the dev squad but the club must be happy with his progress. He's the one young goalkeeper who keeps getting contracts.

Robbo is still listed on the BFC website squad page - which has already added Taylor, Walters and Cork - suggests that he's still a BFC player as, if he had gone, you'd presume they'd have updated it at the same time as the incomings.....?
