Is it now time to re-name the Bob Lord stand.

Has enough water gone under the bridge to re-name the Bob Lord stand ?
Is it something we should consider as part of a general upgrade and branding to a wider audience.
Or , by having one foot in our heritage allow us to be a little different from all the other plastic global brands.
Just pondering aloud.

I was told once, although can't verify it, that we can't. Lord himself decided to name it the Bob Lord Stand and I was led to believe that he had something put in place that prevented any renaming of it. If that is the case, the only way we can remove the name is to demolish the stand.

No it isn't. Like him or not he established the club, made history and left a legacy. I would prefer we always kept that name than have a change of name every season.

He didn't establish the club at all but he was chairman during the wonderful era around 1960 so helped to make history, of that no doubt. But he left no legacy, the club was in a terrible state when he went.

Wow.
Had no idea.
What would happen if the second tier had been built when the club was looking to re-develop.
Would that still come under the original name or would the club have been allowed to name the top tier differently.
Slightly bizzare situation Tony.

I've never seen anything to suggest there was ever going to be another tier other than speculation. I do know that, in 2002, when we had a chance of going up, the club were considering adding some extra rows at the front and potentially extending it at the back by a few rows.

Ok let's split hairs. He 'helped' establish the club to a certain level of standing and was in charge and controlled the club through one of the most successful periods of it history. That is the legacy.

Watched a good few games from there.
But can distinctly remember being very underwhelmed when it was finished & opened.
Thought it was small.

Not splitting any hairs. He presided over a very successful period, that goes without saying, but by the time he left the club was corrupt and broke. I would have removed his damn name immediately.

It shouldn't be changed even if re-built. I thought the totally wicked sponsorship was very disrespectful and unnecessary too (although the money was probably useful at the time). Be nice to hold onto as much of the past as we can after all we do bleat on about being a proper, old fashioned, traditional club.

Again speculation.
But I have been told that the superstructure was in built into the stand to support a second tier.
I suppose that is all hearsay and should it have happened the whole stand would continue with the same name.
I think it all boils down to how we wish to be recognised to the wider audience.
When the tv camera swings across to the hills behind the stand then the name suits our image perfectly but if we are trying to sell our club further afield then is that how we should be marketing ourselves ?
I am sure better people than me are working that one out.

It was re-named the Martin Dobson stand around the time it was being built.

Have to agree with your comment on the sponsorship. I thought calling it The Totally Wicked Bob Lord Stand was beyond disrespectful and totally unnecessary.

If it's rebuilt, it should be renamed The Lord Bob Stand.

In all seriousness, any rebuilt stand should be named in honour of Brian Miller. Just my opinion, but there it is.

We do need a Jimmy Mullen stand.

Name it however you see fit - you know it'll be called the Bob Lord anyway.
I still buy tickets for the Longside.

When Brian passed away, his wife Mary said he wouldn't like anything like that, a stand named after him or a statue. She said, if anything, he'd like something like a Brian Miller Scholarship to maybe assist a young player. When I heard that, I just thought it was so typical of the man.

Perhaps we could put a few rows of seats on the roof so in good weather it would be like one of those open top buses in London or Edinburgh.
....only joking.

I'd have split the difference and named the anew Training Facility after him.

I would rather have a Barry Kilby stand after his years of selfless effort to keep our great club alive.

I did think Arthur Bellamy might be a good shout but the deal with Barnfield put an end to anything like that. They didn't even want Gawthorpe included in the name.

Just a thought but is there anything at the club to remember Ian Britton,it would be nice after the significant contribution he made.

It does seem a little antiquated the way things get named.
But then that is part of our charm to most people I suppose.

Bob Lord is definitely marmite. Personally will never forgive him for selling Dobo, there are countless others you could name that had the same affect.
That said his fame went far beyond Burnley, and good or bad he deserves the stand to keep his name.
If only as a reminder of how bad things can get.

no problem with Jimmy mac stand, definately right to honour a player of that standing, but the others !!
Fishwick /cricketfield is horrendous, as is James hargreaves, and bob lord, Bob lord might as well be Brunshaw Road stand than some throwback to a 50/60's chairman/butcher. Time now to officially call the Longside the Longside too.

What was the old stand before the Bob Lord like? I've only seen a handful of pics so can't really tell what it was like.

It needs renaming to something gender neutral. Lord is so sexist.

The Longside will always be called the Longside in my eyes whether they name it after a plumber or a Butcher....Long side! Always has been always will be.

Don't think we can now add a second tier to the stand due to the new shop and offices. no where to put the supports.
Does need new cladding, will always be the Bob Lord.

Most of the stand is built on land purchased from the Cricket club so The Cricket Field Stand is a perfectly appropriate name for it.

I'm sure the majority of us still refer to our training ground as Gawthorpe, but is the new name of Barnfield a permanent renaming or just for an agreed number of years with the new development?
