Dunkirk
They have done a very good job imo with this film. Now to look up just how "real" the individual characters were, although it does feel like a few could be painted with broad brushstrokes to pull together several accounts

Looking forward to seeing this.
My uncle was in the BEF at Dunkirk and managed to make it back. He came back to Burnley and hadn't had a bath for weeks, his uniform was in shreds and he was suffering traumA.

Just seen it...7/10 for me. Superb visually and relentlessly action packed. Top atmospheric score too. Just prefer more plot-driven films. Tbh Harry Styles being in it was a hard one for me to get past in terms of staying immersed in the film.
There is a brilliant Dunkirk section in the film of Ian McEwan's novel Atonement which I would also recommend for anyone interested in the subject.

Only realised recently that many of the 'little ships' that rescued the men from the beaches made several return trips often under constant attack , such incredible bravery from all concerned especially as they were mostly civilians.

Saw the movie on Thursday.
Agree it needs to be seen on the big screen.
It's a good film, however, I don't think its as good as Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawke Down by a long way.

Very good film. Gritty, authentic and downbeat for the most part. Glad it eschewed the cheesiness of many American war films for something more understated and yet very stoic all the same.

Saw it last night at the IMEX. Stunning, emotionally drained by the end. Wonderful Spitfire footage. Superb score too. Just bought the paperback by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore, Dunkirk - Fight to the Last Man, which tells the full story including those left behind holding back the Germans. Best to be friends than enemies.

Re: Dunkirk
I saw this last night and I thought it was brilliant. Definitely not the typical war epic but it builds the story and the tension throughout to a stunning ending. I read the Sebag-Montefiore book on Dunkirk when I was at college and doing a project on the Battle of France (of which Dunkirk was the conclusion), good book and I'd recommend that too.

Slightly off topic but on a WW2 theme, disappointed to read that the proposed Peter Jackson re-make of The Dambusters has been shelved for the time being.
Apparently it is still going to happen 'sometime' but meanwhile they are concentrating on churning out more of the 'fantasy genre' pap that seems popular at the moment.

Going next week. Bit worried about blubbing. One grandfather died on HMS Grenade when stukas sunk it. Other grandfather was up to his neck in the water for hours and was eventually rescued. Just hope it does them both proud.

Re: Dunkirk
Yup. I suppose it does! Arthur was chief petty officer stoker. I'd like to think one of the bombs that went down the funnels hit him directly, as opposed to the horror stories about those caught on deck or close by in the water. It nearly sunk blocking the harbour and had to be towed away to allow others to escape, before its ammunition went up and it finally sank.

My dad was at Dunkirk, or more precisely, in his case departing from nearby La Panne. He came home on leave in April 1940, for four days married mum, and after the honeymoon at Blackpool got the train back to his regiment and the invasion with mum running down the platform waving good bye. He told me a story of him driving a vehicle down a field by a tall hedge in France when they heard a noise over the other side, looked over and saw a major group of German troops. Don't think they hung around. The officer with him was a local legend and solicitor, Captain 'Smokey Joe,' Southern who was a solicitor in Burnley after the war. He ended up in Burma in the 'forgotten 14th.' I think it was the best and worst time of his life.

Stephen Fry was doing the script(he mentions it in his autobiography 'The Fry Cronicles'). He'd settled on the name Digger. This was incidentally the name I settled on in 1999 when I bought a black Labrador pup and wanted to name it in honour of Guy Gibson's ill fated hound. It didn't suffer the same premature death as Gibson's and lived to the ripe old age of 13.ElectroClaret wrote:When they get round to making it, wonder what theyll call the dog?

Tangential to the Dunkirk story is the interesting tale of Charles Lightoller who, in late middle age, sailed his own boat to Dunkirk to rescue stranded soldiers.
This man's Life Story would make a gripping film.

Re: Dunkirk
I saw it at Northwich Odeon on Thursday, defiantly a film to see at the cinema, rather than a small screen.
I enjoyed it but I think more could have been done to convey the scale of the evacuation, 300,000+ soldiers.
I reckon there was never more than 1000/2000 men in any one scene, even though there was some big aerial shots of the beach.
Similarly, in the film the little boats armada was about 30 boats strong, when in reality there was over 700.
Use of computer generated imagery is very realistic these days, I just think the film missed an opportunity to really show the scale of the "Miracle" of Dunkirk.

Re: Dunkirk
Enduroclaret, I would agree with you on the numbers.
To put across the number of boats involved as well as the troops, I too would have been happy to have them computer generated.
Likewise, there were very few vehicles on the beach which is not the case when you see original pictures of the event.
The movie doesnt give justice to the numbers actually incolved.

Charles Lightoller lived in Yarrow House Chorley , a building which was demolished and the ground used to build St Albans (later Albany High School) just across the road from St George's Primary School where I used to teach. I had lived in Chorley for several years before I made the connection with his role in the Titanic and was astonished that he not only survived the horror of the Titanic but also the "Little ships" evacuation of Dunkirk.
My father grew up just round the corner from where the Wallace Hartley memorial is near the old Library in Colne. I feel there is a Titanic link following me around - so far I have survived 2 cruises without mishap!!!!!!!!!!!

Bear in mind its a dramatisation, and that the vast majority of troops were lifted off the Mole by RN and French Destroyers.
