Government planning to ban sales of new Petrol and Diesel cars from 2040

France announced a ban on the sales of new Petrol and Diesel cars from 2040 and there's possibly going to be an announcement by the UK government tomorrow of a similar proposal.

If that's the case it's going to require massive investment in both the national grid/power stations and the charging network around the UK.

Good news though I think.

Will they have sorted out the refuelling problem by then? Either by putting ultra-high speed filling points into domestic situations, or by vastly speeding up the proces. Could a domestic power supply ever cope with everyone in the street topping up their electric cars, or is it more likely that they still have commercial filling stations that will top up a battery in 2 minutes? It'd be a pain on my street trying to recharge the battery on days when I can't get to the front door.

That's why I mentioned the amount of extra work required on the power grid and charging points.

Now there are cordless chargers for phones, I'd expect by then they'll do something similar for cars.

According to Google it takes 1.75 hours to charge a Tesla S 90D and that'll get you at least 200 miles (according to one guy who's upset that he's not getting the advertised 280.)
I think it's pretty reasonable to assume that charge times will come down significantly and milage will go up between now and 2040.

Obviously the technology will improve. A Tesla is pretty much impractical, except as a runabout, on current performance. But will they be able to match the current petrol engines that take 1 minute to "charge" and will then do 400 miles? Will they be able to run wagons on electricity?

No,not wagons. But how many cars do more than 10 - 30 miles a day? They could all run on batteries charged at home quite easily.

We need to get the wagons off our roads if we are thinking long term. Our reliance on freight going by road is far too high whereas our European neighbours make use of their rail network for a larger percentage of their freight movement. Then again our rail network is shockingly poor and underfunded and the HS2 is too little and far too late.

I think there are more people than you think who do round trips of over 200 miles at some point in their life. But that's the point of the Tesla at present - it's just a runabout. If you want to drive to an away match in Derby, Hull, or Newcastle, for example, it's no use. The technology will improve, I know - but to what extent?

Well i think you can take a look at the improvement over the years of mobile phones and their batteries to see how far they have come. I know it is on a vastly different scale powerwise but you can see from that how much things have advanced in a short space of time and so it isn't inconceivable that car batteries can go the same way.

Tricky one this; on the one hand I want to point out to Cryssys that I am actually ridiculing those who he thinks I'm 'pandering to'.

But on the other hand, if you have to explain a joke to someone, they probably think Michael McIntyre is funny so it really isn't worth the effort.

It isn't a card, it's a fact about family and friends, but I'm still struggling to see why I've had the finger pointed at me over what a lot of people would call a funny comment.

If Cryssys is struggling to find their sense of humour then I don't see why that's my fault.

Has anyone asked our resident muslims if they've got an issue with it, because if they have surely they would've complained?

The difficulty with all this is trying to predict future circumstances and technology.

Diesel became the favoured fuel some years ago because it was thought less environmentally damaging and more efficient then petrol. There were tax concessions to encourage choosing diesel. Now it's seen as a dreadful mistake causing major air pollution issues. In effect we got it wrong. We seemed to concentrate only on one aspect of the idea.

Energy saving light bulbs is another one. Where are they now? Incandescent bulbs are available again and of course we have LED as the latest thing swamping the market. But LEDs aren't really ready to take over the market. There are questions over their light emissions and poor dimming performance.

Anyway, going back to the concept of electric motors, the idea is good in principle obviously as air pollution is a real unseen danger and of course electricity can be generated by greener methods. Not only that but combined with the announcement of encouraging more home electricity generation (solar panels and the like) it could lead to a better environment compared to now and more individual control.

As mentioned above, the big issues still remain in larger transport - ships, railways, freight - and agriculture (tractors, combines etc.).

And underlying all this is still population growth, the big, unaddressed issue.

this is all cobblers, we get rid of petrol/diesel,but India, Russia,China, and a host of others continue to belch out millions of tons of toxic crap unabated.
Its similar to us here recycling rubbish, good that we do, but meanwhile usual suspects do not, and they in fact go the opposite direction, dumping everything everywhere. As its them that are at fault, and because they are huge countries, they are to blame for most of worldwide pollutants.
USA isn't to great either when it comes down to clean living.
The oceans globally are in a right old state, which is potentially catastrophic for the planet. But i suppose my bean tin in its blue bag, and my cornflakes box in its white one will counter balance this.

Realistically people won't be owning individual cars in 20 odd years time.

If you have a self-driving car that can park itself and come and find you then why do you need exclusive use of it? Press a button next to your front door or on your phone and a minute later the car turns up. Takes you where you need to go, drops you off and then picks someone else up. There'll be far fewer cars on the road so not as many charging stations will be required, there'll be charging hubs in underground carparks (where capacity will be much higher because people won't be doing the parking).

Personally, I'd like more focus on public transport rather than the focus on electric cars. Getting rid of the fumes is one thing but more focus needs to be on getting rid of the congestion (although this is more of a city-centric view).

Aggi - you describe a perfectly good public transport system in your first paragraph... my issue with that is having to get into a drone car where someone's left it in a complete mess - obviously the "Big Brother" cameras will be able to identify the scrote who too a dump in the car, but you get what I mean ;)

I doubt people will have completely gone away from the idea of leaving stuff in the boot while they go somewhere else. If you have five bags of shopping in the boot and then you're going out for a meal, will you carry the five bags into the restaurant with you? If I don't have my own car, why do I keep my binoculars, my croquet mallet, my book, my spare coat or sweater, my bag of sweets, all the other stuff that people leave in their car for convenience?

i am no lover of cars particularly, millions are though, not just the deadly dull clarkson and F1 drones, but worldwide people have become reliant on them. Public transport , especially over here in the UK is abysmal. Unreliable and expensive, not to mention having to share space with all manner of idioits. People like the freedom cars bring them.

toyota will no doubt have to recall every model within weeks, most of their cars over the decades either explode, or the steering fails inexplicably.
