I would like to start this thread on Great Boxing Matches of the past, the word "Great" can be over used these days especially compared with yesteryear in my view.. so here goes:

No1. is Thomas Hearns v Roberto Duran, Hearns was regarded as a boxer and Duran as a fighter. Lasts about 15 minutes.

Calzaghe vs Eubank too. One of first fights i remember distinctly.

Also plenty of Hamed fights were entertaining.

Duran v Palomino.
Never seen two fighters stand toe to toe like that, neither would give an inch.

Duran was savage, which is why his name will probably pop up again and again.

The whole Hearns, Hagler, Leonard era was a great time to be a boxing fan

Also plenty of great fights involving Ali of course. Ive a great box set my dad got me of Rumble in The Jungle and Thriller in Manilla. Before my time but made me appreciate how good he was.

Nigel Benn/Gerald McLelland was a corker, shame it ended badly for McLelland. Calzaghe/Jeff Lacy was a 50/50 fight.. before the bell rang,Calzaghe masterclass after the bell rang

Some of the best fights are from lower down the levels, Can anyone remember Granada Fight Night, which featured local boxers, i used to watch it with my Dad and there was a cracking fight between Brian Roche and Carl Crook that won fight of the year

Great post

My addition will be not one fight as such but the Micky Ward vs Arturo Gatti trilogy. Part one below

The 1st Ward v Gatti scrap and it was a scrap. Two absolute warriors. The 2nd to last round needs to be seen to be believed

I came across this a little while back.
I never realised that Warren Stowe had turned pro. He was a few years above me at school.

The Benn/McClelland fight was one of the best boxing bouts I've seen. The same with Eubank/Watson. Both fights were a battle from start to finish. Sadly they are mostly remembered for what happened after.

If Warren Stowe had been miles, miles better, I believe he'd of gone on to be an average boxer.

Of the classics, my own favourite is the Thrilla In Manilla
Others greats I enjoyed watching from boxings past in addition to Ali and Frazier would include,
Henry Cooper
Sugar Ray Leonard
The Benn v Eubank fights
Barry mcguigan
Frank Bruno

That must be the best single punch of all time.

If Hearns could have taken a punch like Hagler could he would have been unbeatable.

Yes really. Was a great fight. I like Klitchsko and even though he lost it was one of the most exciting fights he had been involved in a long time. He could and maybe should have won it but Joshua did well. Had everything that fight.

It was a great fight klitschko had him beat!! And from somewhere Joshua had one last go at him he never gave up!it was down the scale of greats..but was a great fight none the less.imo the greatest fights I saw were Ali and Frazier. And from these shores dave boy green v john stracey was a brutal encounter in the seventies!

I was at that fight. (Dont tell ytib). In fact a few of the burnley team were there, saw Boyd and Hendrick. Sure it was the day we beat Bournemouth?

Anyway back on topic. That qas a proper slug. But entertaining.

In fact that was the day klitchsko came in the ring and announced he would be setting up a boring fight with joshua.

Yeah really good fight, I thought the wrong man won but both gave it their all so I guess as a viewer you cant complain much.

I always enjoyed McGuigan fights. Was a bit like to sparrows fighting over a bit of bread, but worth a watch. Heavyweight. Tyson was a beast. Enjoyed watching him but obviously cheered on Frank 'You know what I mean Harry' Bruno when he fought him.
