David Fishwick
David Fishwick
Pulled sponsorship to take a more active role in a non executive capacity.
Interesting development. Should hopefully attract a decent new sponsor as a Premier League club.

Much simpler, wasn't fussed about what the guy who sponsored it was up to instead.MarkGreen wrote:Cricket field stand will no longer be the David Fishwick stand

If you mean what's a more active role then I've absolutely no idea specifically, but the article on Lancs Telegraph suggests developing the club as a business using his knowledge. If that's what the Directors want from him.MACCA wrote:So what's that mean in England speak?
Re: David Fishwick
Win-Win. Mr Fishwick - Dave to his friends - obviously had a reasonable deal stretching back some years, for his sponsorship of the Cricketfield stand. He was probably approached by the club to relinquish that sponsorship agreement, so they could make more money froma Prem league sponsor. To retain his exposure to the club and support for all to see, Mr F is asked to help increase or develop new revenue streams.
He retains his expected connection and also is able to help further.
Thanks Mr F. I have a lot of time for the man, having read his 'bank' book.

I would have thought Fishwick put more money in than the plumbers sponsoring the Longside, maybe we should have kept Fishwick's sponsorship of the CFS and just dropped the plumbers and returned the Longside to its original name "The Longside"

Re: David Fishwick
If Burnley Football Club had shown any decency at the time, it would have been called the Harry Potts Longside, given Harry passed away during its construction. I'm told that James Hargreaves wouldn't allow even the word Longside to be included when they sponsored it.Steve1956 wrote:Agreed mate, but would love it to be renamed "The Longside" in preference to being named after a plumbers merchant, terrible insult to what was a fantastic terrace to stand on.

So really what your saying is the club was dictated to by a plumbers merchant over sponsorship, that ridiculous, The Harry Potts Longside... has a nice ring to it, I think the club should dump the plumbers.

Re: David Fishwick
When a sponsor comes in then they can decide what name they want. I don't know about them now but James Hargreaves then was run by the son of one of the directors and, I am told, wanted it to be purely the James Hargreaves Stand. That certainly suited my mum at the time, my granddad, her dad, was called James Hargreaves (not the plumbers merchant mind you).Steve1956 wrote:So really what your saying is the club was dictated to by a plumbers merchant over sponsorship, that ridiculous, The Harry Potts Longside... has a nice ring to it, I think the club should dump the plumbers.
The Jimmy Mac Stand is sponsored by that sponsor allowed his name although the worst of the lot for me was the Totally Wicked Bob Lord Stand. I didn't like Lord but I thought that was totally disrespectful.
When anyone asks me where I sit on the Turf - I always say Longside Upper.

Many moons ago I was in the Bob Lord for a div four game sponsored by James Hargreaves ( I think it was Scarborough )at the Motm presentation after the game one of our directors I think it was Doc Iven did a talk and he came out with an absolutely disgusting statment as he patted Hargreaves on the back and said today we had about six thousand people stood opposite us we don't need people like that we need people like you sat in nice boxes watching the game instead.

I cringe whenever anyone refers to it as The James Hargreaves Stand. I cringe more when I imagine away fans thinking we've named it after a club legend when in reality it's a friggin' plumber. There should be an enormous sign saying THE LONGSIDE. For a club so enriched with history, you'd hardly be aware of it if you didn't know.
And it's the Cricket Field Stand. And it's Gawthorpe. And it's Turf Moor. We'll lose that name soon, I'm sure of it.

But there's just never been any class about it. Company before club and that's wrong. Any sponsorship of any stand should always have to accept that it'll be - for example - The Longside, sponsored by James Hargreaves or The Cricket Field Stand, sponsored by David Fishwick. Aircelle did it right with the Jimmy Mac Stand.Quickenthetempo wrote:I wouldn't like the club to abandon sponsors who have been supporting the club through the bad times just because we have hit the big time.
If I had a big company and wanted to sponsor the club, I'd feel a bit of a d!ck putting my name over a stand instead of heritage.

Re: David Fishwick
They could call the turf blobbyland with the cricket field named The Noel Edmonds stand for me if it meant we got millions in to improve the team and club.
The fans do and always will refer to them by their proper names.
In fact my dad still calls the Jimmy Mac the Beehole.

Re: David Fishwick
Well yes, but that's what sponsorship is about. He wouldn't have been getting much exposure at the time for his money, although to be honest I'm never quite sure what sponsoring a stand achieves.Steve1956 wrote:If he was a director at the time he was using the club to promote his own company hardly rocket science is it.

But to be fair that stand has never actually been called the Longside. It was briefly the North Stand before the sponsorship, hence the entrances to the seating area being called NU1, Nu2, etc (for North Upper).HelloHiGoodbye wrote:But there's just never been any class about it. I thought I remembered seeing an old photo, before my time, of THE LONGSIDE on a sign on the roof of the stand. Might've imagined it. But aaaaanyway. The North Stand, sponsored by James Hargreaves. Obviously, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. Just a bit class-less. Especially that Totally Wicked Bob Lord thing. What a joke. Hope they paid a fortune for that.
