Dan Agyei

Anyone think he is likely to remain as our fourth choice this season rather than loaned out and / or us bringing in a 4th striker?

He looked fairly well built last season, and in fact met him after Bournemouth away. Yesterday when he was coming out alongside Vokes he looked almost as big as him. So looks like he is physically ready now if nothing else.

From the bits I have seen of him he looks like he could go a long way for us if he continues to progress.

Hard to judge what is better for him and us at the age he is now. Personally would prefer he went out and got some game time and confidence. But if he is ready hope the fans get behind him.

You would hope the fans get behind him but he's still young so maybe a loan out at championship level would be beneficial.

Gray, Vokes, Barnes, Walters are the first four choices

See Walters as more of a replacement for Boyd. Or a halfway house between Boyd and a striker. No issue with Walters being one of our strikers though if he has been brought in purely as a striker. But cant see him coming to be a sub and I cant see us dropping Gray or Vokes who both had a fair return last season.

Hope so. But expectations and the need for instant success means maybe he wont. I remember Lafferty getting flack on his debut for running a ball out of play!

He needs to go on loan to a League One side and get 46 games under his belt, it will be an absolute waste of time him staying here all season, that is the only way he will ever get anywhere near making our first XI on a consistent basis.

The lad has bags of potential. A championship loan would be ideal because he is at a challenging level. Agyei on the bench will just delay his progress and he could easily be a 1st team player in the next couple of years

And then there was the time Dyche brought Steven Hewitt on against Watford and the lad got flack for one misplaced pass. It was the club's AGM that week and Dyche condemned it very strongly. Young players have to be given an opportunity by the fans or they will never succeed and we also have the added problem now in that we are in the Premier League making it even more difficult to give them that chance.

In terms of a loan. That will depend on whether Dyche and his coaching team think that or working with the first team in training will benefit him the most.

Perhaps somewhere like Bolton would make sense.

They have a couple of experienced strikers he could learn from (Le Fondre especially - perhaps not Madine off the field). They re strapped for cash so will need loans. And they are local so he could still train with us if needed. He wouldnt have to relocate anyway.

That said, depends whether Bolton (for example) play the sort of style that Dyche would want him to learn from too I suppose.

If he stays here hopefully he starts the cup games at least.

If he does stay he'll get the U23 games, which are a significant improvement on last year, but I wouldn't want him going somewhere to sit on the bench. Perhaps another year at Div1, he should start at that level and hopefully bag a few for his confidence. He does look to have something about him.

That's a massive boost for the club and the younger players this season.

I'd rather loan him to Hannover 96.

Tammy Abraham took his chance in the championship, if we genuinely think he will cut it in our first team then I personally don't see the benefit of sending him to any league one club.

Where would he be guaranteed starts is the problem. Most Championship clubs have very good strikers and he's unproven at that level.

The overreaction to that incident really was something. A poor pass was made and there was an instant groan.
From the reaction directly after and over the years you'd have thought he was being singled out for abuse.

Worth mentioning that a loan is no guarantee of first team games. Our two in League One both didn't start yesterday, and O'Neill came on for the last twenty minutes.

Doesn't matter where he is or isn't - amazing that a so called Burnley fan can consider it fair to be booing a young lad for a misplaced pass.

Both Long & O'Neill came on as subs while Whitmore remained on the bench for the whole game.

Was he booed ? Or was it not that groan that you here often when there is a misplaced pass ? (You here it at all grounds not just our games)

Not sure the fans who do groan at misplaced passes are able to differentiate between who made the pass and whether it was a young player or not.

In my 40 years watching the club I have never thought that Burnley fans have treated our young players like this. Yes we have had some moronic fans who think our players should be like Messi or Zidane and anything less warrants their uneducated opinion of "play it to feet" whilst stuffing a pie in their face !!... ...but as said their ignorance does not differentiate between shouting at Danny Ings or Robbie Blake in their pomp or at a youth player making their first team debut.

It was certainly enough for Sean Dyche to highlight it at the club's AGM and ask the question as to whether Burnley fans really wanted to see young players come through if they were going to treat them like that for one misplaced pass.

It was a frustrated groan after about 85 mins of a poor performance from a patched up side.

I didn't go to the match - so I don't exactly know what happened with Hewitt but it just does not sound like our fans.

You probably attended Tony - did you pick up on this at the time as anything out of the ordinary other than groaning at a misplaced pass from a small minority of fans ? I cannot remember anything being posted on this board about it and I am sure at least one of our sensible fans would have said something if Hewitt would have been treated in the way SD seems to be intimating.

I don't know why SD felt this was enough to raise a question like he did at the AGM. Personally I think he is wrong on both points. Firstly I don't think Hewitt was singled out for any abuse and secondly and more importantly I don't know any Burnley fans who would be anything but delighted to see young players coming through into the first team....

.....though I accept that like all fans in the Premier League now if fans thought that young players who were not good enough were being picked in the first team whilst their club was selling their better players or not spending as much money on new players as the fans think they should then there maybe some unrest. Though still don't think this would or ever has extended to treating a young playing badly for a misplaced pass at Burnley.

Groans for misplaced passes will always happen at all grounds. I think our fans are supportive of young players. Nothing but really positive encouragement for Agyei around me at Turf Moor even when things didn't come off. Thats saying something because some of them are very negative.

I like Agyei a lot. Looks big and dynamic. He's fifth choice at the moment though and it'd be brilliant if he could get a loan - really brilliant if he was playing regularly in the Championship.

I was at the "Hewitt"game.

I recall nothing whatsoever beyond the norms of a football crowd anywhere.... and I'm cynical about this alleged booing.

Get him to Accy Stanley who would play him every week. He could train with us two days a week then.

Offer them a deal of they pay his wages in full every time he doesn't play. Free when he plays. It's game time they need not benches.

How did the elite acadamies get on against League 2 sides last year in that Sherpa van trophy thingy?

It's a step up, the most important thing is to play every week. He wouldn't in the championship and might not in league one like Chris Long and O Neill this weekend.

He's 20 years old now. When does he stop being 'young'? I can't see any of the current four leading strikers causing any sleepless nights for defenders. They need challenging. I don't know whether Agyei could provide it as I've hardly seen him play but someone is needed to offer a greater goal threat.

My word, you do have a downer on our strikers, all of whom have scored goals at Premier League level. For a side like ours, I thought the returns from Vokes & Gray were good last season.

I just feel that despite the unquestionable success at Championship level they were just about adequate last season. I believe this season will be a lot tougher and am concerned that we will come up short when it comes to putting the ball in the net. Also concerned about central defence but I appreciate that has been dealt with on another thread.

We could definitely be better than 'adequate' at this level. We have shown countless times over recent years especially that if you dare to dream who knows.

But a few years of sustained premier league football is the first requirement before we get above our station.
