Another day, another target.

Daily Mail reporting we are considering an offer for forward Majeed Waris from Lorient who were recently relegated from Ligue 1. 25 years old, scored 9 goals last season and can play up front or on the wing.

Haha, I think you may be onto something here.

As you've said, if you look at Waris Mareed, comparable players are listed as Nicolas de Preville, Britt Assombalonga and Florin Andone.

If you look at Andone's profile, similar players include Chris Wood, Britt Assombalonga and Patrick Bamford!

It's not really clear what 'comparable players' actually means. Some of those are players with very different play styles. So maybe they're comparable in terms of their value. However, you wouldn't expect Chris Wood to have a market value of just 5.4mil. Not after he was top scorer in the Championship last season. Basically, don't trust that website I guess, haha :D It's certainly something of a coincidence though.

Does anyone else think some (not all) things were better before social media? Like when we all went to a game as the same claret-wearing fans, united and unbreakable.

Now I can't help looking around and wondering...'is he a racist? Is she a sexist? Is he a Marxist? Brexiteer or Remainer? How old is KBRFC? Could that be the Turtle?

I like this message board. But message boards in general have turned us all into clones of Arsenal fans.

I've always assumed anyone like KRBFC et al wouldn't be anything like that in real life, and if I did meet a fan from on here, I'm pretty sure he'd use his real name, so you'd have no idea who he was on here.

Idiotic comment about Nelson. It's good to have players from different countries and backgrounds. On the back of the message board I wouldnt want to be looking round wondering who will be offended if a player gets called soft or a pansy or the ref sworn at for a poor decision.

One of the major benefits of signing him would be that if a replica kit wearing supporter were to have their shirt personalised with just his initials "MW", you would know who it was referring to even if the supporter was upside down.

Would be a quality signing - fast and powerful and got a good eye for a pass. Like a battering ram too when he gets going with the ball at his feet.

Think it's a deal trying to push others through but would be a great acquisution.

When the transfer window is down to two months it will improve things. But it's important also to scrap the January window.
This is of no benefit to teams struggling with small squads and small budgets .

Our team have nearly all got British/Irish names, but I remember Fred Smith. I was once having a quiz with a mate when I was very young, and I said: who is Burnley's reserve right back? How do I know, my friend said. Fred Smith?

Today's Times: Burnley ready to pay Leeds £15m for Chris Wood

"Burnley are prepared to pay £15 million for Chris Wood but have earmarked two other strikers if they are unable to agree a deal with Leeds United.
Florin Andone, the Deportivo La Coruna striker, and Abdul Majeed Waris, of Lorient, are also on Sean Dyche’s list of targets. Burnley have made an £11.8 million bid for Andone, the Romania striker, and would need a work permit for Waris, the Ghana forward. Leeds have had talks about re-signing Ross McCormack on loan from Aston Villa to replace Wood.

"Hull have rejected an improved £10 million offer from Burnley for Sam Clucas, the highly rated midfielder. Hull have lost seven key players this summer and were reported to have rejected an initial bid for the 26-year-old last week."

I do wonder if these "reported" bids are just a way of us telling Leeds that we won't keep upping the offer. In recent times it has seemed Dyche has his target, and tries to get them no matter what. Maybe we are becoming a little sneaker...

Hi tiger76, I've just copy/paste from the Times. Agree, interesting to see a Nigerian having work permit turned down for Birmingham. Don't the work permit rules require a certain number of international appearances, so establishing the non-EU passport holder has got higher skills than alternative players with EU (including UK) passports who could also "do the work." I don't know whether B'ham are "shopping" at a lower level than Burnley (Prem v Championship) or whether we'd face the same issue with Waris.

It's all to do with how the player's country fares in the average FIFA rankings table for the past two years.
The rules as I understand are that if a player's country does not appear in the top 50 of the average two year rankings, then the player will not be granted a work permit, regardless of how many times he has played for them. In the Birmingham case, Nigeria's average rank is 54 (even though their current rank is 38) which is why that permit was turned down. Ghana's average rank is 41 so as far as Majeed Waris is concerned, so far, so good.
The next hurdle is the number of appearances a player makes. If the country is in the top 10 average rankings, the player must have appeared in 30% of the countries international matches, if ranked 11-20, then it's 45%, ranked 21-30 it's 60% and ranked 31-50 (i.e. Ghana's case) then it's 75%. Have just had a quick look and it seems this might be the stumbling block as I don't think he has played the requisite number of games.

On another note, I see he was banned for 6 weeks a couple of years ago for this "tackle" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHvxhbDlnco" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Although in his defence, he said afterwards "I had no intention of hurting him or to kill him. I just wanted to scare him"
