The one in Langdale is probably best placed for Scafel

Not sure if there are any in Wastwater, but its certainly a better climb from there.

Rosthwaite is cheap and ideal. In Borrowdale. Straight up to Styhead tarn and turn left. The Scafell pub in the village has real ale and reasonable food.

Not sure about better but it's certainly easier. The route that gets used on the 3 National Peaks.

There's a great little campsite at Wasdale Head , literally at the bottom of the path up to Sca Fell , and there's the Wasdale head Inn , great food and beer

Firstly - do you mean Scafell, or do you mean Scafell Pike (as i think posts so far assume)?

If you do mean Scafell, then there are a couple of gems in Eskdale, which is as lovely and unspoilt as they come. One at Boot particularly nice.

If you do mean Scafell Pike, then i endorse the shout of Rosthwaite. I think the route up from Borrowdale is the nicest and its a nice place to camp, although the Great Langdale NT site (and another one adjacent) are also very good - that walk up Scafell Pike is just very long indeed, if spectacular.

There is a campsite at Wasdale Head i think, but thr walk is just a straight up and down procession from there.

Either Scafell or Scafell Pike. Doesnt matter so much. We are climbing Sca Fell Pike and will be setting up camp after the climb not before. So will be able to drive to it if we go up and down the same route.

Thanks so far

I'd have thought Great Langdale is the best one for Scafell Pike as the route is the easiest from the Dungeon Ghyll pub. As you say though, just a longer route.

You mean Scafell Pike then. Scafell and Scafell Pike are very different Mountains with a 300 metre ravine (Mickledore) between them - you dont want to end up up on Scafell by mistake!!

I think Borrowdale is both shorter and easier - the climb up Rossett Ghyll out of Langdale is a massive burn on a warm day! Theyre both nicer routes than the Wasdale Head route though!

Yep - Eskdale great - but the walk to Scafell Pike is a bloody long way from there. Effectively, you have to go round Scafell.

In terms of tents what does everyone use?

I've had my trusty Terra Nova solar for a few years now and it'll withstand a hurricane! :)

I love the campsite at Wasdale Head. Lovely quiet valley with the Wasdale Head Inn. Much quieter and spectacular than Langdale but have to admit the climb up Scafell Pike is not as nice as some others. If it is Scafell then the Fisherground campsite in Eskdale is a good shout.

Never done it from Borrowdale Spice, but the drag along Langdale Valley rules that way out for me.

If you do Great and Green Gable and loop around, its a nice walk from Wasdale head

Just got a vango 300 plus for this weekends trip. In need of a new sleeping bag though if anyone can recommend. Not sure whether to go synthetic or down. Will mainly be summer and autumn camping.

CFC, depending on your intention and companions there are just so many options.
If you just want to summit and have kids the shortest is from the car park at the head of Wast Water. The nicer from Wasdale is under Great Gable to Sty Head and then along the corridor route before summiting. Either way it's the same descent with Wast Water in front of you.
Hope you get the views cos it's a cracker.

Thanks. There is three adults and five kids in total. All kids are 'energetic' shall we say. if they get too energetic they arent mine and their dads will be in tow so I will just plod on haha.

Ive done it before. In fact ive climbed much higher and longer than sca fell pike but id actually say its one of the hardest ive done.

Camping we are completely open to anything. Ideally something where we can have a bbq and a firepit although a lot of places are funny about the latter.

Ended up at wasdale head decent site although better views elsewhere but a good spot. Little pricey compared to others but would stay again.

Was a belting day for it. Definitely picked the right one.

Thanks for all the recommendations.

Did you go in the pub? Just wondered if it was still being run by Dick Turpin and Al Capone. Bloody dear last time we went in!

Yeah didnt seem too bad to be honest. Nice pub and jam packed. Didnt get food though, only drinks. £3.50 a beer didnt seem too bad given location and price of the shop!

Presume you mean this one?
