Transmission fluid? It depends how dark the smoke is, so give us a clue.

What colour smoke?

Black and sooty - overfuelling / poor combustion if it's a diesel

White smoke - water vapour in the exhaust gas / head gasket.

Blue smoke - oil entering the combustion chamber - worn piston rings / valve stem seals.

Have you checked under the oil cap for "mayo" - emulsified oil and water mixture?

Have you checked the coolant reservoir for pressurisation?

Could also be that you have a cylinder down (if it's a petrol) and it's running on three. Now this could be because coil or plug lead has gone or it could be because the gasket has blown.

Of course it could be something simple.

Are you sure it's smoke not steam? When was its last service? Is the engine making a knocking sound or does it sound OK?

What size engine is it?. Can you here a chain like rattle from the engine bay?

Edit to say, I think you can check for fault codes on the corsa c without plugging it into a diagnostic machine. Here's a link that explains the procedure

Sorry posted a bit late

White smoke/steam could be moisture. Having to keep filling coolant tank with water every other day so could be a leak.

Car shakes at a stand still and the steam/smoke chugs out.

Recently changed all 4 spark plugs and had a new water tank fitted. Oil level good but il check for mayo this morning under oil cap

Thing is its hit n miss. Some mornings fine but then some evenings it chugs and smokes

Takin it garage at dinner. Hope its not gasket.

Runs well for me its my a to b work car. I use the other at wkends

I can confirm there IS mayo type brown substance under oil cap. What does that mean.

Took a couple of efforts to start but when it did no shaking this morning. Had to refill coolant again tho

Potentially it's the head gasket, BUT some cars do just gather the mayo type brown stuff by the Oil Filler cap with age.

Keep an eye on the coolant level, if it drops again then it could well be the head gasket is knackered, but you'd need someone to have a proper look to confirm it.

Very true.

If its only a thin film its often just condensation build up underneath the rocker cover.

You might get away with dropping a dog turd* in the coolant to seal up the gasket.

*not an actual dog turd - Holts Radseal or similar.

I love gasket jobs.

Put you heaters on is it blowing cold even on max? If so along with oily smoke suggests the cooling system - leaking radiator - check for leaks under the car as you fill the water. The engine will substitute water for oil as a coolant when there is no water- but it needs fixing, nothing surer than the head gasket will blow if you keep running it like that. So get it fixed, it won't be far from a write off if that blows as it will take half your engine out when it blows.

I'm really good at cars. First thing you need to do is turn the car on and then open the lid at the front. Poke around with something like a stick and figure out if anything is loose. Do this for about half an hour until you're sure nothing is loose. Now open the garage door and ask a neighbour for help.

It could be leaking from anywhere in the cooling system - the pump would most likely show itself when the car is running, but for me the most likely first stop would be a hole in the radiator. A quick top up and look under the car will tell you if its the radiator or one of the lines that's split. While water pumps can themselves be a leak, normally I wouldn't expect a pump fault to keep emptying your coolant tank - it more often leads to engine overheating, because its not pumping it around the system. Its also a lot harder to detect a pump - usually the way you get to the bottom of a faulty/temperamental pump by ruling everything else out. Or at least that's how it used to be with all the diagnostic kit these days, it could well be different.

Water pumps are a common fault on Mini's (along with the thermostat housing)

I chased coolant pressurisation and leakage around in circles. Never manifested itself at idle or after a decent run. Only decided to lose coolant when I attempted to return the car to its owner. Twice.

Turns out the water was tracking around the pump to the exhaust manifold and evaporating before a it could drip off the car.

I swear I went grey if not bald.

A compression test of the cylinders should confirm if the gasket has gone.

Add a red food dye to the coolant. Once evaporated, the dye stains should give a good indication as to where the leak may be

I remembery chimney being done and they did a smoke test. Can you do that with a car? Big smoke filled the front room. It wasn't nice and they man left without doing chimne. We ended up being sick from the chimne being blocked.

With a chimney its the same principle - by stationing people by the stackon different levels (lounge / bedroom / attic. You will usually be given an indication of where the blockage is on the stack (if there is one)- you can't avoid the smoke unfortunately, but sounds like you had a chancer if he just left you with it :o

With the car you are looking for similar signs - or any engineering usually, it wont fix anything but half the job is pinpointing where and what the problem is.

Had mine diagnosed as the coil pack on its way out, quoted £120 to replace with new spark plugs.
