Blacked Out Windows

Certain sections of society seem to favour these. Personally I think they look bl**dy awful. Do people choose them because they think it makes their car look more classy or makes them look like VIPs ? When I see a Corsa with blacked out windows I am not fooled into thinking they are VIPs and I'm not remotely interested to see who's driving or what is going on in the car.

I have a corsa...

As standard, the drivers window, passenger window and windscreen are clear.

However, all of the rear windows including the boot window/rear window are tinted.

Whats your problem? Or are you solely referring to vehicles that have front tints too?

Affords a certain amount of privacy as well as having heat reflective properties. Also reduces the glare from headlights

Isn't there a legal limit for the front windscreen and front side windows?

Who do you mean by certain sections of society by the way?

I work in a very white, middle class office of largely university educated people. I'm looking at the car park now and almost every car has tinted windows, from the office junior's Peugeot 107, through the bog standard Vauxhalls and Citroens to the boss's Jag.

Do you mean us?

Up to a certain point, in the eyes of the law:

Yep. There was a case a few years ago where a cyclist was knocked off by someone opening his car door and hitting the cyclist due to not being able to see through illegally, heavily tinted windows. Got away with it though https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/ ... 17957.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's no mention of the tinted windows there.

It does say he didn't look in his mirror though, which was the primary reason he didn't see him.

From what I remember of the case it was classed as a contributory factor. The legal limit is 70% light transmission so obviously 17% fell way under that.

Could you not link to something relevant to the UK, with you being abroad?

Was a car parked in the city centre today in the pedestrianised zone with totally blacked out windows. I am guessing it was the fuzzy wuzzies. There was a riot police land rover in the same place yesterday. Which was odd.

It's illegal to have them in France now, (in the front), and not just in new cars. if already fitted you have to take them out.
This law came in in 2016. 135 euro fine and 3points on your licence for anyone who's failed to remove them.
It's correct in my opinion, because police need to be able to check whether you are driving appropriately i.e. wearing a seat-belt, not using mobile phone, not eating, watching a film!!! etc etc.
Same in Italy, though I don't know exactly what the penalties are.

I tinted the back windows of my car as I have work gear in there sometimes. Though, it wouldn't solve somebody scoping out whats on the backseat, but its a deterrent.

There's a difference between blacked out windows (illegal) and
tinted windows (legal).

Ok, just to clarify my point:
No tint whatsoever on front windows or front side windows forward of B-pillar in France and Italy; and in Spain, you’re allowed a low tint on sides but nothing on front.
If driving abroad it's worth checking the regs, as most countries have restrictions that are significantly stricter than ours.

Is that Sea Mills Lane, Foshiznik? I notice there's nothing indicating the maker on your car. Is it an eastern European import? I'm going to send my friends from Bristol Manor Farm out looking for you. You shouldn't be hard to find.

For those interested (seemed alot of positive interest in my cossie above), my other half has just bought her self an immaculate Astra off ebay. She's had it a couple of weeks and she has worked over 2 whole weekends getting it together. The car was a standard Astra. All work done with her own hands (i may have helped a little...) 8-) Was wondering whether she should put blacked out windows in it?
