Radio One is 50 years old this weekend - tomorrow actually [started 30th September 1967]..but there is a lot of coverage this morning on the BBC.
What a breath of fresh air it was, compared to what had gone before...Tony Blackburn kicked things off..

I remember avidly watching Top of the Pops back then [not sure when that started] with my mum and dad slagging off every performer that came on..do we just become our dads in the end?

Remember it well, 1967 homesick in Belfast as the BBC repatriated the Radio Caroline pirates, installed them in land-based studios and let them play good music. Hard to believe the government censorship and control in those distant days.

I think we just become our dads. I had a radio station on in the truck the other day. I didn't realise I'd just listened to 3 diferent "songs". I couldn't tell the difference. A quote my mum & dad often used! I tend to listed to stations that have the word Gold in their name these days.

From radio one, I remember in the 80's Mike Reid refusing to play Relax by Frankie goes to Hollywood. But had no problem playing Lola!!

Edit: just checked, Lola was banned by the BBC. But because it had the words "coke-cola" in it, until changed to cherry cola.

Two roofers working next door treated me to a day of Radio One at full blast a couple of weeks ago. It was about half an hour in before I realised it was Radio One and not some offbeat rap and wierdo music station. Absolute bloody crap. And why to builders and such like need the radio blaring all the time -- it's not as if they don't make enough noise already! I have even known them bugger off to the chippy for their dinner and leave the darned thing on full blast....

The lead singer here, Alex Chilton, became a bit of a cult figure later in indie and alternative music...looking at WIKI, a very talented bloke.

I haven't listened to Radio 1 since Mark & Lard left - probably 10 - 15 years ago.

What I have been unfortunate enough to hear since has been almost exclusively painful.

Anyone wanting to remind themselves what Radio One would sound like in modern formats could do worse than "turn the dials" to Radio 2. Radio One has become little more than the BBC's uncool attempt to deal with the threat of "pirate" bedroom radio of the late 90's.

Preston DJ Jordan North is worth a quick listen at weekends, when he is siting in for the regular DJ's. I'm slightly biased with him being a big Claret! Always giving little old Burnley a plug. Only a matter of time before he gets his own slot.

Radio before Radio 1 was dire. A mix of Mario Lanza, Opera, Jim Reeves and Eartha Kitt. Radio 1 was a breath of fresh air and aimed at the young. It still is and explains why it doesn't appeal to old farts like Hampstead.

You need to sharpen up LCP on the comedy and micky-taking [6/10] because I haven't said anywhere on this thread that Radio One did not not appeal to me..

I loved Mark and Lard. I remember once switching on my stereo which, at the time, was always set to Radio 1, only to be met with silence. Thinking the volume was low, I just turned it up.. and up and up.. but still couldn't hear anything except for the static feedback. Thinking this was bizarre and there's no way Radio 1 would be off air, I pressed my ear right up to the speaker as I was convinced I'd heard some papers rustling. Then...

16..Mark and Lard are/were excellent but the the time slot and the breakfast show audience were not suited to their style of broadcasting unfortunately.

Well said Silky...Grace Slick was special, not sure why she didn't have a much bigger career..she looks very different now - a great slot at Woodstock.

I really could not agree more. I don't even think anyone in their teens know what a radio is now. But the above statement is exactly what people of my age now used to say to me then. So what do I know.

I try not to regress to "grumpy old man" state when it comes to music as there is always good stuff coming out but 6 is where the good stuff is at ...not 1 which is full of the type of music passing chavs play very loud with their car windows down.

pretty much as bad as radio gets now which is sad because i grew up with it.

most radio is tripe nowadays because fewer and fewer kids are actually bothered about music. they care more about image and fame.

and anyone accusing me of being an old fart i challenge you to listen to it (radio 1) for a full afternoon.

i stumbled across some rubbish yesterday called Heart radio, the DJ was an imbecilic prat, droning on about celebs and their wealth, the music was all the same, really all the same, worst thing ive heard in ages.jaw droppingly bad

At work our radio has been tuned to radio 2 now for years. Chris Evans is ok especially on a Friday when there are usually some interesting guests and then it’s into Ken Bruce which for me is a masterclass in radio broadcasting, popmaster etc.

I can just about do with Jeremy Vine but it’s the 2 o’clock slot when steve Wright turns up that vexes me, I desperately need a viable alternative there. If no one else is in, I switch to radio 4 and The Archers followed by the afternoon drama.

I had thought that I was hiking when on the day when radio 1 started and this was the first record that was broadcast. This is the tune as I recall

but I must be mistaken as I started work on 1st September 1967 and so could not have been out hiking at the end of the month unless it was a Saturday.

Radio One just plays whatever the major record companies are churning out. So is it not just that the majority of tunes put out now are over produced beige bile following the same format over and over and over again?

For what it's worth I listen to 6music constantly and now only 3 shows on Radio 1- B Traits, Phil Taggart and Monki all in the early hours on Catch up as I reckon the electronic/club music they have is still usually really good

The problem now is that dj's are allowed very little flexibility with the playlist, i used to listen to Mark Goodier and John Peel in the late 80's to about the mid 90's, you would discover a lot of indie stuff that no one else championed,remember the your tune slot with Simon Mayo as well. The internet now has pre-eminence, anybody can upload a video to You Tube or other video blogs, and get 10's of thousands of hits within an hour.

I remember listening to 'Light my Fire' by the Doors, whilst having my breakfast to the Radio. It must have been around then, so perhaps it was Radio 1. I have a vague memory of asking my mother about why he wanted a baby to light his fire.
