Just posted this myself so apologies.
One of the greats so many fabulous songs. Remember him touring with Talking Heads in 1977 then headlining himself a few months later.
The first Heartbreakers album was and remains a classic.

Sad news- same age as me and I had no idea he had any serious health problems.
A very consistence performer over a very long period with The Heartbreakers and, of course, Wilburys.
"Free Falling" would be in my top 50 tracks of all time.

The legendary musician suffered a full cardiac arrest and was found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home Sunday night. He was taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and put on life support, reports TMZ.
They pulled the plug, had no brain activity.

No mention because he 'hasn't officially died'..
Google 'Tom Petty'.. get CBS or CNN.
He is described as 'clinging to life'..
- was found not breathing.
Family gave instructions for life support to be turned off.
It doesn't look good (it doesn't look good at all)..
- news was given out prematurely 'that he had died'.. ( probably by the police).

Really shocked to hear news of the great Tom Petty. Absolutely at the top table of rock icons. Regrettably never seen him live and he was certainly on my 'to do list'. Now wish I'd made to gig in Hyde Park in summer. Into the Great Wide Open. RIP Tom Petty, your music with live on forever.

Sad news indeed. Only 66 and one of the great musicians and performers America has produced.
An inspiration and a great loss but we have the music to remember what a great he was. Thanks Tom and rest in peace.

Saw him at Manchester Apollo, early eighties. His performance of American Girl at, (I think) US Live Aid is a goose bumper.

I am a big Tom Petty fan and have been since the first album. Only saw him once, at Coventry, I think, in 82 or 83.
66 is beginning to sound rather young.

Unbelievable that most of the Wilburys are now gone. I wanted to get tickets to his gig in London this year but they'd already sold out. Gutted I'll never get to see him live.

Some excellent coverage of TP's career on the BBC News channel today..footage, interviews, tributes..the lot.
There was a Coldplay tribute last night [with the help of Pete Buck] in Portland.

I suppose it's our (my) age but so many have gone recently, Petty of course but also Keith Emerson and Greg Lake (within 12 months of each other) Chris Squire from Yes, Paul Kantner from Jefferson Airplane/Starship just off the top of my head. Of course there is also Chester Bennington from Linkin Park, my wife and I had tickets to see them at Manchester after waiting years for them to come here again and it was postponed because of the bomb, then he went and killed himself. I suppose we were destined never to see them.
When we were young and listening to all this great music we never gave a thought to our mortality did we, music was gonna last forever and so were we. Very sad. Even the keyboard player in my old band died 3 months ago and he was mid 50s (a bit younger than me).
