Just found out I have a torn rotator cuff, I think I did it lifting the wife's wheelchair a couple of weeks ago on holiday.

Anyone ever had this and what was your recovery like from it?

Hasn't Tom Heaton suffered this? I vaguely remember reading that this injury is why some dislocated shoulders take months to recover from. You two could start a support group.

Edit: maybe not.

That genuinely made me laugh IT,

I did this a few years ago. Was in loads of pain for a short time. Needed plenty of pain relief - over the counter stuff didn't help. Had little movement in my arm until a physio sorted me out, so suggest seeing one straightaway. Acute injury for me and was much improved within days.

Cheers Taio, so I take it you didn't need surgery....the doctor has suggested steroidal injections but not sure I want to got hat route on my shoulder.

I have been piling on the deep heat and ibuprofen in a bid to keep the pain down but I think I might have to go the physio route....

Ask your quack if a support brace would help you ease pain. If so and you need one have a look at these. It's a Padiham company, somethign i didn't know when i bought an ankle brace from them about 8 years ago.

I did serious damage to my rotator cuff muscle in a bad car accident on the M1. On my way too watch the clarets at Doncaster as it happens.

Pain relief didn't even come close to touching the pain and thing's only began to improve once I had taken several sessions of physiotherapy. In truth my shoulder is still no way near 100% what it was but initially my shoulder looked out of position without actually being dislocated, It now looks absolutely fine. The accident was in 2011.

Get yourself to the physio pal.

I tore the rotator cuff in my right shoulder 10 year ago and it took around a year and a half to heal completely. Did my own physio as recommended by the doctor (never offered to be referred and I'm too tight to pay for my own), no injections offered etc. The year and a half felt like an eternity as I couldn't do a lot of things I enjoyed, with the first 6 months being the worst, I could only perform certain movements with my arm, trying to extend it upwards for instance was agony, I couldn't do it. The remaining year was ok, it wasn't right but nowhere near as painful. The good news is after it did heal it has been fine and its as if it never happened - I play reasonably competitively at badminton which is all shoulder movements and there's no ill effects. Same here, did mine a few years ago doing some midlife crisis workout on the monkey bars. Not lifting my arm up - because it f***ing hurt so much - and waiting many months did seem to work. There's probably much quicker routes, but I'm too tight also.

Anyway, it's all better now but I won't be swinging like a chimp again.

Thanks all, it seems it is time that will heal but the issue I have is being a full time carer for my wife means that I can't really take time out of lifting and handling...I am calling a sports physio later today and see if I can get a session booked in to see what is possible...

You guys are right, it hurts like hell and really limits movement!!

I have also contacted the guys at the link that IT posted and going to see about a brace in the meantime that may help taking some of the weight....

took just over a year for the pain and discomfort to go when I tore mine, initially it was very bad though. after 12 months the aching had gone altogether and its been fine.

I tore mine 20 years ago with a scaffold tube.
My shoulder dislocated tearing the fotator cuff in the process.
I had an operation to repair it done by Dr Schmitgen at Burnley General, who incidentally did my Cruciate ligament repair too.
I had no real issues,with pain or movement well no more than you'd expect as a normal rehabilitation from the initial trauma.
So I'd recommend surgery, and avoid steroid injections but I think age and general condition effect these choices and the decisions you make.

Has anybody twisted their shoulder... in bed!?

A few weeks ago, I was led on my left hand side. I turned over and I must have turned my arm either inwards or outwards (I was half asleep so don't remember), but it was bloody painful!

The day after the front of my shoulder, the areas where the top of the arm meets the top of the chest was aching like bad. And a few weeks later, it still hurts if I do any sort of lifting. I can move it in all angles, so I don't imagine it's serious, but has anybody experienced similar, or hazzard a guess as to what the medical term could be? I'm not sure if there's been a small tear, or whether it's just as the first line suggests, just twisted and a bit inflamed.

Sounds like a small tear FF. Nothing you can do but dose up with nurofen and lots of Deep Heat cream - at least it will keep the women away LOL
