Can you name the players on this Burnley team photo?
I've received a request for the names of everyone on this team picture taken in 2001 but there are one or two I'm not certain of.
Can we put together a complete list please?

You've got the same two question marks as I have but I'm wondering if the one on the left, middle row, could be Mark Rasmussen and is the one top right John Williamson?UpTheBeehole wrote:Shandran Mullin Thomas Little Michopoulos Davis Cennamo Taylor Branch Cox ???

Looking at the squad list for that year I wouldn't be able to pick out Rasmussen or John Williamson.ClaretTony wrote:You've got the same two question marks as I have but I'm wondering if the one on the left, middle row, could be Mark Rasmussen.
Could it be those two?

Also at the club at that time were Alex Kevan (left in November) and Paul Smith, but Smudger isn't on there.
So one could possibly be Kevan?

Can we please stop it with these colourised pictures and respect history as it was meant to be seen?
Re: Can you name the players on this Burnley team photo?
This part of the Stan era was the high point of being a Claret for fans my age, at that point.
There's a lot of experience on that picture, but many of them were really good players.
Mitchell Thomas, Stevie Davis and Ian Cox were the best defenders I'd seen, Little is still the best winger I've seen, Arthur was hilarious, Payton was clinical, Taylor was a beast in the air, Ball was rock hard, Cook was classy as, Branchy was good fun, Armstrong was solid, Niko was part-brilliant-part-terrible, West was dependable, Alan Moore occasionally was majestic, and Stan was a fruitcake who gave us some great times.

Agree Walton. When Glen was on his game he was worth the entrance money alone. We do currently miss somone of his ability.

Dean West was the best full back we'd had for years to that point. Sadly he was never the same player after his long injury and peoples memory of him have been sullied due to the amount of time it took for the management team to realise he was never going to get it back.

In an otherwise dull game that was a scorcher!
I was sat directly behind it and from my perspective the ball didn't appear to have any movement other than to be rapidly getting smaller as it travelled further away.
It was one of those you knew was in the millisecond it left his boot.

Anyone remember Fred's thumping volley at Stoke?
I remember around a dozen voices all shouting "hit it" in unison as the ball fell towards him and boy did he hit it.
Who remembers the player who scored a similar stunning volley at the same end a couple of season's later?

One game that stands out for me was Alan Moore's performance at Deepdale in our 3-2 win, and in particular his shot from near the halfway line that hit the bar and Ian Moore headed the follow up straight at the goalie.Walton wrote:I saw him have some shockers, some real 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' games, but I also saw him have some great games showing class and invention we'd rarely see from anyone else. Unless I'm mis - remembering it didn't he get an injury towards the end of the season he won player of the year and so missed the pre-season start of the following campaign?ClaretTony wrote:What long injury?
As I say I may be mis-remembering but in my minds eye I can remember the difference being almost like the change that occurred to Ian Measham (though it wasn't as obvious or long winded as his injury had been).
If I'm wrong as always I will hold my hand up but in my minds eye I remember West looking bloody good and then not being, and I don't think it was just that better came along (if memory serves Briscoe).

West played from 1999/2000 to 2003/04 but he hardly got a game in 2000/01 when we played with three central defenders and Paul Weller played there. He was in the reserves for most of that season and didn't feature in the first team until April.
Overall, just didn't rate him at all. Once we went to a back four, when he got back into the side, we conceded goals for fun and he was very much a part of that.

Re: Can you name the players on this Burnley team photo?
Fair enough with Briscoe I can see him on the left now. So no debate there.
As for West mainly I remember the gap.... him winning the Player of the year award being out and being crap when he came back. So I'm not going to argue I was struggling to remember some one their names on the pic.... which tells you all you need to know of my memory, as I'm sure you remember around that time there was little else I thought about at that time.

West did all the hard work fetching and carrying for Little.
Dean West never got the credit he deserved.
Re: Can you name the players on this Burnley team photo?
West got back in, in April 2001, after we lost 5-0 to the Bastards, We won the next game 3-0 against PNE with him in the team and he got a beauty of an assist I seem to remember.
I liked him but he was better offensively (working with Little) than defensively.

Re: Can you name the players on this Burnley team photo?
Weller was great at right wing back and worked well with Glen, I thought.
He played as a wing back though and was far more offensively minded than a right back, understandably. West was decent going forwards but was pretty shocking defensively - but that is effectively just a fair description of Stan's entire time as our manager (bar the 00/01 season where, if memory serves, we were actually pretty solid with Davis, Cox, Thomas, Briscoe and Ball just in front).

West was a good Division 2/League One defender and an average Championship one.
He was a big improvement on the majority of full backs we’d had over a long period of time.

Re: Can you name the players on this Burnley team photo?
You are right, that was the season we played with a back three of Davis, Cox and Thomas with Weller and Briscoe as wing backs. It was certainly our best season defensively under Stan after promotion, we conceded 54 goals. In the next three seasons we conceded 62, 89 and 77 although by the last of those seasons West was sharing right back duties with Lee Roche.jedi_master wrote:Weller was great at right wing back and worked well with Glen, I thought.

Totally agree jedi - Weller and Glen worked really well together down that right hand side.

Two big memories of West was that scorcher at Stoke and watching Stewart Downing absolutely laying waste to him wat the SOL hen on loan at Sunderland.
