Though he was already passed to be honest. Don't know much about him but would have thought he was a legendary figure? R.I.P.

Not necessarily my favourite - there have been so many great songs over the decades - but it was certainly the first record (78rpm) I bought in about 1956/7.
RIP Fats.

Wasn't he the guy who was supposed to board the doomed plane with buddy holly but drew the short straw?

Ain't that a shame !!
With Chuck Berry passing this year, it now leaves only Little Richard, Don Everly and Jerry Lee Lewis, of the original Rock 'n' Roll heavy weights left !!

Only talking about him the other day having watched the programme on him a few weeks ago on BBC4. Great entertainer and had a good life entertaining so many people for a long time.

Yes, you’re right. Not thinking straight! It was one of the crickets whose name escapes me - Waylon Jennings perhaps?

gandhisflipflop wrote:Wasn't he the guy who was supposed to board the doomed plane with buddy holly but drew the short straw?
No, that was Waylon Jennings...he was playing bass Guitar for Holly on that tour. JP Richardson AKA " The Big Bopper ", ( Chantilly lace ! ) had started with Flu syptoms and mithered Jennings to let him go in his place, to which he agreed, virtually at the last minute..
Holly had shouted to Jennings as he left for the Airport, " Hope your Bus breaks down !! ", Jennings laughingly shouted back, " I hope your damn Plane crashes !! ", two young Lads messing about, but that last conversation haunted Jennings for the rest of his life..
Waylon Jennings is not widely known in Britain, but became a legend in the United States as part of the Outlaw Country music scene with Willie Nelson..
He's best known over here ,to anybody over 45ish, for performing the theme to the original " Dukes of Hazzard " series, and being it's " Narrator " . Of course, that series brought " Daisy Dukes " and Catherine Bach's legs to the attention of a grateful generation of teenage boys, myself included !!

Yes you're right about Waylon Jennings who felt very guilty about events, long after the plane crash.
WJ died in 2002 from health complications related to diabetes.
Ritchie Valens was another who perished on the fated flight....'Come on let's go'..

I’m half way through watching the bbc4 documentary mentioned above. I’ve always liked Fats Domino but hadn’t appreciated just how influential he was on the transition from RnB to Rock & Roll.

Legend, once sat behind him and his band on a plane. The double bass had a seat all to it's self.

Never left home in new Orleans, so possibly never get mixed up in the excesses of rock and roll, thereby enabling to live a long life. Interesting character, I'm gonna read a bit more on him I think.

28...biggles....really..? - any need for all those 'smilies'?
How in heavens name is it my 'hit list'? How does that work?..sinister?
Like a lot of people on this forum, I listen to a lot of music.
I read a lot about music.
It is one of my main hobbies/interests.
I have some form of news on most of the day, if I am at home.
Consequently if there is a death of someone, mentioned on the news, I will hear about it pretty early on.
** I hope all of that, is okay with you..

Goes without saying, but without these early rock n roll/ Blues musicians from the deep South, of whom Fats Domino was certainly one, they'd have be no Beatles/ Who/ Stones, etc and co in the 60's in Britain.
Pure, beautiful, timeless sounds.

Punk is rock n roll, just a variation on the theme.

I bought a live recording of Blueberry Hill by Fats in Timothy Whites in Burnley in 1971 and couldn't stop playing it! I've actually still got it. Jerry Lee Lewis was also on that live gig album and I was truly hooked and I've been listening to him ever since.

I THINK it (Timothy Whites) was on the corner where Superdrug is now?? Or maybe the next block next to Samuels which is a phone shop? It had 2 separate entrances, one on the side and one on the front or am I getting mixed up? It was a big shop.

Pretend you're driving down Manchester Road, go past the Town Hall and the Mechanics, you go through the lights past the Big Window, and the old " Burnley Express " Office on the corner, your brakes fail, you career past Burtons on your left...go straight on and you'll go straight through Boots' main entrance....
