Will he sign, won't he sign. Speculation was rife for months.
Mr Lee Trundle - article on him on the Gruniad website today.

Derek Riordan?

Serious note, possibly Messi, Ronaldo, Best, Maradonna, Pele? These might make it into the category of best player Burnley never signed.

My thinking entirely. What a pointless discussion, might as well just ask 'who is your favourite player ever?'

I know most won't agree but I was a massive fan of fat Ronaldo. Just wish he didn't have knees made of lard and didn't have an Oddies loyalty card.

In my era the best player we never signed - permanently - was Andy Marriott. Was gutted - but then along came Marlon a bit later and all was forgotten!

Robert Pires. He just seemed to float above the grass, had a wonderful touch and could finish.

Peter Crouch

I'd still be pleased if he signed now.

Always wanted us to sign Jamie Cureton back in the late 90's, early noughties. I always thought he was a terrific player (sorry, very Harry Redknapp!). Anyway I'm sure he's not the best player we never signed but he was certainly one I wish we had done!

Ziyech was the one I was gutted about.

Him and Brett Angel were clinical in the 90s.

Presumably from reading the OP, the suggestion is a player that we were linked with, so therefore not really “a pointless discussion”, especially when posted on a Burnley fans’ forum.

A weird one as we have signed him .....

Jack Cork MK1

Was absolutely gutted when he left Chelsea for Saints and not us - Glad he's seen the error of his ways finally.

Didn't Peter Beardsley once have a trial with us sometime in the early 80's?

Not sure about Beardsley but Ian Rush did.

Luton Shelton.

Wasn't there a reserve game he scored three goals in but his name couldn't be reported for fear of alerting other clubs?

Was it also Shelton we had the work permit saga with or was that someone else around the same time?

Story was he was in the region for trials with Man Utd & was staying with a Burnley fan who took him on a visit to Gawthorpe

Think he had a trail with us before move over to play in Canada

Sat in front of me with Chris McCann at a reserve game when he was on trial. Didn't know anything about him at the time so wasn't concerned when we sent him back.

That's spot on and I know that Burnley fan. He trained with us, I believe for a few days, before going back but was not a potential signing.

According to Stan, Crouch was a done deal until next day things got a bit lively in Duke Bar that time and then he (more his Mrs tbh) gave back word.

In 1981 Beardsley who was s great prospect at Newcastle, was on loan at Carlisle. Though there would have been no chance of him coming to Burnley permanently perhaps we were interested (alongside Carlisle) in a loan?

One that springs to my mind is the striker we had on loan from Forest in the early 2000's. Think he was called David Johnson (?)

Would have liked to sign him but think they wanted too much

That’s different from what he said in my son’s Match of the Day annual where he claimed he was turned down after having a trial at Burnley

I agree. He was just what we needed at the time and gave us a real boost, but we knew (sadly) it was unlikely we could strike a permanent deal as he was a bit too good!!

Not sure where you're coming from with that,,
Beardo was first at Newcastle when a teenager but was released without breaking through.
He then signed for Carlisle making over 100 appearances (79-82)

At the time I'd agree with David Reeves and David Johnson as loans as they were much better than what we had.

Only a quid!? I'd just won at cards in the 110 club. At least £3.80 went In!
