Very picturesque, Kindonesque. Is the second feature any better?

The narrator sounds Manchesterish but calls it raw-ten-stall. Is that how they pronounce it over that way rather than rottenstall?

In the early/mid 60's I used to catch the train from Waterfoot to Bacup to go to the swimming baths there on a Saturday morning. I also remember catching the train the other way from Waterfoot to Bury and then on to Manchester to go to the cinema. The line must have closed shortly after that film was made in '66. I remember the fanfare which greeted the "final train".

I think people who pronounce it raw-ten-stall are those who have never seen it written down before and/or have never heard of the place. You often hear the same pronunciation on TV nowadays.

'Bacup' is 'Back Up' on the radio and telly.

There's a lot of 'bottoms' on that journey...and I particularly like the more imaginative tunnel names. I can't decide if I prefer Newchurch Number 1 Tunnel or the "round the curve to Newchurch Number 2 Tunnel"

I mentioned The Royal at Waterfoot in passing. Pub was legendary - as was the landlord. Name of Stannard. He didn't bother with lock-ins. The door was open all night through to breakfast in an era when pubs closed at 11.00pm sharp by law.

It left bury in 1966 ?thats some train ride....men have landed on the moon "apparently" since then!

Stannard was most certainly not the landlord of the Royal in 1966. Donald had a off licence in Bacup in the 60s and then went on to own a chippy on Bacup Road, Rawtenstall. Stannard took over the Royal around 1973. His son Paul owns the little Masons now in Crawhawbooth and I am also led to believe he is taking over the Bull in Crawshawbooth as we speak

I really enjoyed watching that. It brought back memories of when I used to catch the train from Rawtenstall to Cloughfold to go to school at Lea Bank!

Played footy against Royal, including good players like Paul Stannard, Gus Mannion, Mick Guest and a young Simon Holding (or Holden). Always good for apres ski in't pub.

Great little pub the Masons. Hope it’s true about the Bull badly needs some investment that place!

Thanks TC. I was thinking of a period in the 70s when I used to visit a really good friend and she used to take me to the Royal. In 1966 I was too young to catch a train from Bury to Waterfoot but it was a great trip seemingly.
The sound of the steam train chugging up the incline was really evocative don't you think?...or are you not old enough to remember steam trains?

I remember the steam trains Kindon, has I was brought up on Queens Square in the 60s
