Mike Phelan
For those interested, there’s a good interview with him on Clarets Player. Maybe he wants a job!

Re: Mike Phelan
I spoke to Micky before the West Brom game at start of the season. I assumed, having played for West Brom, that he was doing the half time draw but he said when I asked him: "Am I ******** - I like a cup of tea at half time."Pearcey wrote:For those interested, there’s a good interview with him on Clarets Player. Top bloke - he is working for a club, presumably scouting, but I'm sure is looking to get back in as a manager or assistant.

Re: Mike Phelan
After being at Man Utd for many years he's now scouting which seems a drop, though that at least he would be coaching somewhere by now.
Re: Mike Phelan
A great interview. Could happily have listened to him for longer talking about his career. Would have been good to hear from him about playing and coaching at Man Utd too, and also picking up an England cap.
When I was a kid, he was one of my favourite players in that early 80s team. I wrote to him enclosing some stuff to get signed by him and the rest of the squad. It all came back duly signed by everyone, accompanied by a letter, handwritten by Micky, which included some answers to questions I'd put to him, and help and advice about how to become a better player for my school team.
Not long after, I wrote to him again with some more stuff for autographs, and received another handwritten letter in return.
I've still got the letters now, all these years later, but I think they show what a great guy he was even then as a young up and coming professional, taking the time to write to a young fan.
It's been great to follow his career all the way through, and see all the success he has achieved in the game, knowing that he's remained a true Claret.

I remember him scoring at the death at Oxford and jumping to the top of the fence and clenching his fist in the joy of celebration. Passion for Burnley.
Claret and blue right through.
Ps Interview excellent.

Re: Mike Phelan
I used to do a Sunday paper round early 80s and Hallam Cres was on my second bag. I often saw Micky and Marcus as I delivered next door to their parents house. Always good for a wave and a chat, which meant a lot to a 14 year old claret.
I remember reading one of the player profiles for Trevor Steven and his car was a Ford Capri. I was imagining a smart sporty number, then one day i was walking up to Marsden Park for a kick about and saw a bloke on Hallam Crescent getting into a battered cream/yellow Capri and realised it was Trevor. Illusion shattered....

Re: Mike Phelan
I bumped into Marshall Burke the other day who also played in that era. Had a good chat with him as he was good friends with my cousin who also played for Burnley at the time. They were both Scottish lads and on the periphery of the first team.
With Mike Phelan and Trevor Steven we had 2 excellent players - and big shame we were not big or good enough as a club to keep them for longer as they both went on to have 2 of the most successful careers ever experienced by "home grown" burnley players

So was Trevor Steven, I wonder if they knew each other? It would have been a nightmare for the teacher if they were in the same class.Top Claret wrote:Trevor Stephen was from Berwick upon Tweed if my memory has it right

Must have been celebrating Flynn's equaliser in 1983.

Went to that on the train from London with an Ox fan.
Can't remember our scorers.

Re: Mike Phelan
He said that Newton was a right back.
And that he stayed at Burnley because of John Bond.
He should be up on the wall instead of Trevor Steven though.
