I was in a pub in Kent last night. There were a number of currency notes pinned up behind the bar. I asked what was the highest denomination. I was shown one "worth" 100 000 000 000 000 (yes, 14 zeros), 100 Hundred Trillion Dollars "I promise to pay the bearer on demand..." "for the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe."

Apparently, this was the 3rd series Zimbabwe dollar since 1980 and was issued from Sept 2008 to early 2009 - and was then replaced by the 4th Zimbabwe dollar at an rate of 1 trillion to 1.

I'm told that if you queued for a few hours it would buy you a loaf of bread.

Our useless good for nothing excuse for a Government will probably be looking for yet another new leader soon..I wonder if Mugabe's under consideration.

In 1980 when Zimbabwe replaced Rhodesia a Zimbabwe dollar was equal to 1 US dollar.

In Nov-2008 the official exchange rate was Z$30,000 = US$1, But, this was the 3rd series Zimbabwe dollar. The black market rate was much higher.

In early 2009 Zimbabwe abandoned it's own currency. 0n 2-Feb-2009 the exchange rate was Z$ 300,000,000,000,000 = US$ 1.

So, the Z$ One Hundred Trillion note was worth a little more than US 30 cents. So, let's say it was worth somewhere between 15p and 20p.

Soooooooooooo...how much would that loaf of bread have cost equivalent to pound sterling?

37..I do believe that Ugandan Asians have been particularly successful since coming to the UK in order to escape the delightful Idi Amin - they have started many of their own businesses, they have employed people and have contributed to national economic growth; they have been innovative and hard working and they have paid their taxes...and more.

I think it's a good idea keeping them here.

I agree with hampsteadclaret. I worked in the East Midlands (Leicester then Nottingham) 1975-1983 and met a lot of Asians who had been kicked out of Uganda. They were very grateful to be here and worked hard for their families and integrated well into local life. Paid their taxes and observed the law.

From what I've read China have been pouring money into the place and some people high up in government felt they had the backing of the Chinese to seize power.

Been sacked (alongside his wife) from the party today.

But in the last few minutes he's vowed to stay on.

He addressed the nation with a view to stepping down but I think it must have slipped his mind.
