Would appear there's been some sort of military coup in Zimbabwe, but there are lots of conflicting reports.
Hopefully he's been deposed.

But surely Mugabe is in control of the Armed Forces?
We now await lengthy and detailed political analysis from the UTC Expert Debating Team.

The army are saying that Mugabe are "safe and sound"
With their record, he's probably swinging from a lamppost as we speak.

When he’s finally no longer in power, we will all find out how bad he and his regime was, and all our politicians will gasp in horror about how bad he’s been. To a man (woman) they will all proclaim “we didn’t know!!!”

He's just about ruined the country; hopefully the new rulers will be better but there's a fair chance it'll be "meet the new boss, same as the old boss..." The army statement is quite humorous (intentionally or not):
"There was no coup, only a bloodless transition which saw corrupt and crooked persons being arrested and an elderly man who had been taken advantage of by his wife being detained. The few bangs that were heard were from crooks who were resisting arrest, but they are now detained"

We've got customers over there and they're expecting Mugabe's wife to suffer some sort of fatal 'accident' and for Mugabe to be kept alive.
He will probably leave the country, he's got money stashed around the world.
The wife is apparently the worse one of the two though.

It's ok getting rid of him but it's who takes over that's the big danger as we have seen with dictators in the middle east.

Cut off foreign aid let them get on with it. All our money does is allow them buy more arms and ammunition which turns massacres into genocide. If you want to sort out the problems in Africa, install white Western leaders to make sure the workforce runs properly. Oh, hang on..........

Absolute power corrupts
This clown ran a one party democracy to guarantee he would always get re-elected.
The one before him the darling of the Tory party Ian Smith was no better but Mugabe has managed to create vast wealth for himself that Smith could only dream about.
Opposition is ruthessly crushed .
However his gangster mate down in South Africa will give him somewhere to run to if he decides to go before he's shot.

I was in a pub in Kent last night. There were a number of currency notes pinned up behind the bar. I asked what was the highest denomination. I was shown one "worth" 100 000 000 000 000 (yes, 14 zeros), 100 Hundred Trillion Dollars "I promise to pay the bearer on demand..." "for the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe."
Apparently, this was the 3rd series Zimbabwe dollar since 1980 and was issued from Sept 2008 to early 2009 - and was then replaced by the 4th Zimbabwe dollar at an rate of 1 trillion to 1.
I'm told that if you queued for a few hours it would buy you a loaf of bread.

Dazzler wrote:I take it you were'nt told what it was worth in pound sterling...?

Hi Dazzler,
wilkipedia has some info on Zimbabwe dollar: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimbabwean_dollar
In 1980 when Zimbabwe replaced Rhodesia a Zimbabwe dollar was equal to 1 US dollar.
In Nov-2008 the official exchange rate was Z$30,000 = US$1, But, this was the 3rd series Zimbabwe dollar. The black market rate was much higher.
In early 2009 Zimbabwe abandoned it's own currency. 0n 2-Feb-2009 the exchange rate was Z$ 300,000,000,000,000 = US$ 1.
So, the Z$ One Hundred Trillion note was worth a little more than US 30 cents. So, let's say it was worth somewhere between 15p and 20p.

I know this is a bit off topic but we gave the Ugandan Asians refuge and they took over a third of Leicester. Isn't it now safe for them to go back?

37..I do believe that Ugandan Asians have been particularly successful since coming to the UK in order to escape the delightful Idi Amin - they have started many of their own businesses, they have employed people and have contributed to national economic growth; they have been innovative and hard working and they have paid their taxes...and more.
I think it's a good idea keeping them here.

I agree with hampsteadclaret. I worked in the East Midlands (Leicester then Nottingham) 1975-1983 and met a lot of Asians who had been kicked out of Uganda. They were very grateful to be here and worked hard for their families and integrated well into local life. Paid their taxes and observed the law.

Worth about 50 loaves these days.
I wonder if the media is bidding for their own copy of the One Hundred Trillion Zimbabwe Dollar note - and we will soon see a copy shown on TV or the print media?
Or, perhaps someone is being sent to Harare on assignment - and is trying to get some currency ahead of their trip?
