Like loosing one of the family LPC, so sorry to hear of your sad loss, my thoughts are with you mate.

Our springer spaniel will be 14 in a couple of weeks time. He's quite arthiritic now and costing us a fortune in Loxicom and Nutriquin, but I know we would pay ten times that amount to keep him going.

remember being on the phone to my vet to give him the go ahead to put my fred to sleep....gutted doesnt do it justice...unconditional love from a dog...feeling your pain.

Chobulous, are you 'keeping him going' for his benefit or yours?
Don't get me wrong, I've been down that road with three dogs over the years and tough decisions have to be made.

I still remember coming home from college and my mum was sat on the sofa crying. My Dad was keeping himself busy with some DIY. All she said was, "Notice anything missing?". I had to walk back out the house, I was that upset.

We got her (Brandy), when I was 3 and I was nearly 18 when she passed away. Like someone said above, definitely like one of the family, especially when you've been brought up with them since you were a child. It's such a shame they don't live very long.

I had a German Shepherd called Axl, from 8 weeks old until he died at 14. He had reached the stage where the only option we had left was going to be a trip to the vets, where I would return with only a lead and a collar. I had sent Mrs Herts a text from work around 11:30 and said that I thought the sad journey would have to be made. She got home around 13:00 and my phone rang at work. For some reason, I knew what she was going to say. She had gone out into the garden and found Axl dead on the lawn. Sad as this was, it did at least spare me the trip to the vets (though I did have to take his body there).

It really is like losing a member of the family and takes a bit of getting over. Sorry to hear the sad news from the OP.

We're "keeping him going" for his benefit thanks very much. He's still a puppy in his head it just takes him a bit longer to walk around the park that's all. He still enjoys his life, always greets me at the door wagging his tail when I get home from work, still pesters me for used tissues, the snottier the better. Still has a good sniff of every dog he meets. still pees on everything he walks past. Still loves his daily dent-stick. We lost our springer 18 months ago and still miss him every day. I know exactly what you are going through.

My thoughts are with you LCP. On the day my son passed from cancer (osteosarcoma, left leg, with metastases in his lungs) our rescue greyhound Margo developed a limp so my wife focused on her as a way of offsetting her grief. The limp improved through the week but on the Thursday evening Margo jumped off the garden onto the patio and hurt her left shoulder. We went to the vet who said it was a soft tissue strain. No change overnight so we took her in on the Friday morning for an X-Ray. It turned out she had osteosarcoma in the left leg that had spread to her lungs, so we took their advice and had her put down. Who said lightning doesn't strike the same place twice. Now back up to two Huskys which fill the house and trash the garden!

Sorry for your loss, I’ve cried reading the replies.

I know exactly how you are feeling, had 5 dogs go to doggy heaven, heartbroken doesn’t say how it feels.

We are gluttens though, time heals, you will feel like you are ready to give another a home. We currently have 4 dogs filling our lives, wouldn’t be without.

I feel your pain..Its nearly six years since we lost our Blue Merle collie and there hasn't a day gone by that I haven't thought about her.. A dog gives you unconditional love 24/7 and vice versa..

My condolences to you. I've got two spaniels almost 12 and 9 respectively. Absolutely dreading losing any of them. The eldest one has had surgery 3 times in the last year. I've just discovered another lump. He is happy enough in himself but I only discovered this new lump this week and starting to think here we go again. The pair if them are my best buddies.

Good for you! He's still a puppy in his head everything just takes a bit longer! Just like us all! What a pity they don't live for three score and ten. They are not called man's best friend for nothing. Indeed it's a very well earned and deserved title! Actually a house is not a home without a dog!

Sorry you're suffering, LCP, I hope you're OK.
I have to admit I'm not really a dog person but watching programmes like "Supervet" and the one about the practice in Yorkshire, really shows the incredible bond that can be established, it's almost a family tie, especially when it's time to say goodbye. Respect.

So sorry to hear that LCP. I love dogs but I actually have a budgie. He's become my best mate over the years and keeps me company since I work from home. It's hard to lose a pet - I can't imagine losing him. He has been a bit under the weather this week and we had to leave him at the vets overnight a few days ago. That was hard enough for me. Thankfully he's since come home and is much, much better.

I guess we just have to make the most of the time we have with them and remember the good times. Your dog was very lucky to have you as its owner, I'm sure - be thankful you had that time together All the best to you.

Commiserations LCP.

The last time I cried was when I had to have our American Bulldog, Billy, put to sleep. Especially poignant as the big lumux had previously been owned by my step daughter who lost her life in a car crash.

I can't imagine the pain of losing a child. My deepest sympathies to your family.

She had a wonderful life and she brought so much joy into my life.
I walked her 2 or 3 times a day, usually with the neighbours and their dogs.
Together they explored the surrounding fields and the woodland that backs onto our home.

During the day she sat next to my desk, occasionally nudging my elbow when it was lunchtime or time for another walk.

For some reason she had a massive blood clot that went from her heart to her kidneys so bloods couldn’t circulate to her rear legs.
She was only 7, I didn’t expect to lose her soon. I am slowly getting used to her loss but the house feels so empty now.

What a lovely dog LPC, you must really be missing your little pal, get yourself on the Turf tomorrow, have a couple of beers and raise your glass to your lost friend, im sure 3 points will cheer you up a little and ill be having a beer in the 110 club so ill raise my glass and spare a thought for your loss,cheers.

LCP, much appreciated. Losing an only child and a dog to the same disease, in the same week, makes you think that someone is taking the p!ss. It's taking a long time to lose that feeling.

I was reasonably 'manly' when rushing my girl of 15 years to the vet, knowing how it would end.
It was not being greeted at the door coming in from work the next few days that sent me to tears.

I'd use OneDrive of Google Drive, or something like that to back up your photos though, as opposed to relying on an image sharing site lime Imgur. But, you know, dog owners like to show off. So show off.
