Be very careful if you have a seat near the corner flag

I don't know which club and I don't know when it happened, but this is for real.
An eagle eyed viewer of MoTD is offended at the sight of a supporter making a masturbatory gesture at an opposing player taking a corner & writes to the home club to complain. Fan contacted by his club & asked to explain his actions & is expecting to be banned.

Totally agree, but if they’re going to go down that route then grounds will be half full!! Giving that sign is no different to swearing and if we’re going to ban people for swearing it will be the end of football crowds!!

It amazes me that when players get lengthy bans for making gestures at fans who are taunting them, chucking bottles at them, chanting obscenities about their wives and partners etc, the fans who provoke this expect no consequences.
Frankly these idiots are embarrassing. It should be unacceptable in 2017.

I get offended seeing someone waving/thumbing at a player, if I write to that club I hope they take appropriate action.
Can hand gestures really cause offence?
I mean can they really?
Different fingers/motions are mean different things depending on where you are from. Eastern Europe has many weird n wacky signs

Why do I need to be careful? I've never taken especial care to avoid making deliberately obscene gestures, and I don't think I need to start now.

This could have been me...
Especially after Ollson had deliberately smacked the ball into the CFS after Barnes' goal.
Two way thing I am afraid.
Can we get footage of that incident and ban Ollson?

Same Ollson saying "f off" to the fans in the CFS giving him stick at the end of the match.
Should we have a big hoo haa about it or just laugh that we've managed to get under his skin for a game and potentially helped Burnley to have a bit of an advantage on the pitch.
The biggest crumble I have seen once our fans have turned and a glorious night in the CFS was against Derby where Shackell felt the brunt of how intimidating the Turf can be. Let's start applauding opposition and giving them a pat on the back for a good goal or pass against us eh?

I agree Keighley but I have been a claret since around 1950 and until perhaps the mid 60's it wasn't acceptable or common place

Its not appropriate, but you’re only questioning if its for real because your so used to people making similar hand gestures at you.

Great stuff!
There is nothing more unseemly than an adult making 2 or 1 fingered gestures or the one cited. They pull grotesque faces to match.
Sometimes they have their child with them.
What's the point?
If they could see what I have to look at.....
Distinct lack of adulthood and that's just for starters.

Why can people not use bad language and hand gestures it’s football not ballet or the orchestra!
The majority of people supporting Burnley are working class, working in factories and the like. It’s everyday language to most people nowadays most women swear more than men. They are words and gestures they never hurt anyone just ignore them simple!

If taking offence were an Olympic event, we would be world beaters.
I’m not one for such gestures myself but I acknowledge some people are brought up differently. Discouraging it is one thing, banning people for it is completely outrageous. Sections of society are now being regularly targetted for everything they do, short of drawing breath. It will probably be called inciting hatred whereas when I was younger it would simply be calling someone a tosser. I find some of these people repulsive, but I wouldn’t go overboard in trying to force my mannerisms and morality on them.
Cue the liberals with the standard response that is rapidly alienating huge swathes of Britain with it’s self appointed moral superiority

That's a dodgy attitude on two counts - one, it implies that working class people are somehow less able to control their behaviour in the presence of children; two, it implies that swearing in public places is fine and acceptable. Point two is a valid belief if that's the way it takes you - and plenty of people do judging by the way (mostly young) people choose to swear at each other or at random at the tops of their voices.

I don't want a big hoo haa bfccrazy. I am merely pointing out that Ollson could have knocked out a kid with the power behind that kick, hence it's dangerous. As far as I know, no one has ever been injured by a hand gesture.

Tony, I would be amazed if this isn't Chelsea....their supporters in one particular corner act like morons whenever the opposition have a corner kick right in front of them.

I have no issue with language at football. Folk can use gestures too. It is how an adult looks when doing these gestures that is the issue. Would they do it anywhere else? Do they know how they appear?
I have seen some very respectable chaps losing themselves in V signs etc! They look like men in white coats should help them!

My point exactly, I’m not offended by them, I just wonder if they’d be embarrassed if they saw themselves.

The funniest story I heard was a Cardiff (?) fan appearing in court over pitch encroachment, and threatening the opposing fans, which I’m assuming were Swansea, some years ago.
When in court explaining the footage, the said fellow’s defence was that his mate had told him that there was a fire in the away end, and that he ran over, and was gesturing and shouting ‘There’s a fire! Quick, come on, get the women and children out first’.

Is getting offended by "obscene" hand gestures more or less pathetic than getting offended by people choosing not to buy from certain retailers because of where they advertise?

Was once on the turf for a pre-season friendly against Liverpool. My mate was giving it Scouse wankers this, Scouse wankers that. After quite a few minutes of this a bloke from the row behind tapped him on the shoulder and said " I'm a Scouse ******. Please give it a rest or I'll chin you" My point? Both had paid their entrance money and both got their say!

Think we're on the same side here mate, I want the atmosphere at the Turf to be intimidating and get under the oppositiona skin - I want Burnley to pour cold water on Arsenals changing rooms on Sunday and turn off the heating in there .... As you say, a hand gesture never hurt anybody in that way so don't get why somebody would be so offended. Players get more stick off home fans than they do opposition half of the time and the stuff written on Swanseas forum about Ollson in lead up to our game was probably worse than what we said to him.

I'm outraged when fans slap their wrist with a blank expression towards the end of games.
I don't condone the mimicking of disabled people no matter how long the referee has added or played extra. It's appalling to even think such a thing is acceptable, never mind carry such action out!
Yet asking if someone wants a brew leads to a complaint and possible ban.
Outrageous!
