The former Keirby Hotel in Burnley has closed down today after being served with a series of legal notices.

The legal notices were served yesterday and today by Lancashire Fire and Rescue and Burnley Council.

The orders relate to concerns about health and safety, and specifically about fire safety, at the landmark building that has recently traded as the Crown Hotel.

Because of these orders, people living and staying at the hotel have been forced to move out.

Burnley Council has arranged short term and temporary accommodation where appropriate, and has provided advice to the people who were living at the hotel.

The building is now unoccupied.

Any bookings which have been made for rooms at the hotel are now cancelled.

The authorities are in contact with the owners of the building and the tenant company.

Any individual or organisation who has made bookings for the Keirby Hotel / The Crown Hotel, Burnley, and who has any query about refunds, or about any other money owed is asked to contact The Crown Hotel in Stoke on Trent on 01782 599343.

Hope it rises again.

Not before time really.

I stayed there a few times when the Ormerod was fully booked going back 3 or so years and it was grim then.

I think when a hotel is charging £30 a night on Late Rooms and its not even discounted the writing might be on the wall.

Unbelievably a picture of this hotel when it was The Crest was on the picture round of University of Challenge many moons ago !!

For those of us of a certain age we will remember Swiss Corner with good memories.

The town will be better without it - hopefully not too many people lose their jobs and its replaced with something positive for Burnley.

Modern brutalist architecture at its worst.

Must admit, it's not pretty.

Maybe this says something about the place.
A bloke I know, a relative by marriage sort of, with a very dodgy past, dishonest in the extreme and currently in jail for, amongst other things, arson, worked there not long ago on security.
Mmm!

Anyway, it's an eyesore and I hope it gets demolished.

Did a gig there once and used service lift, coming out through the kitchen at the back of the ballroom. It was totally unfit so I reported it to Environmental Health people who copped out with some feeble excuse - they didn't want to be considered racist no doubt.

Good memories indeed.. But it's been an eyesore for years. A premier inn maybe but doubt theres the custom.

I remember it being built. Feeling very old now. It was the ultimate in luxury when first opened.

Always smile/grimace when I recall driving down Centenary Way to see a banner on the side of the building proclaiming

“CLEAN EN-SUITE BEDROOMS”

Was never sure if they were advertising the fact they had en-suite or that they were clean

It was considered "posh" when it first opened.
The bar there was seen as a fairly decent spot for young ladies & gents about town to meet on a Saturday night.
I haven't been in there for 40 years or so but it's looked well downmarket for a fair period now when I've passed on my visits to Burnley.

Has it been a "DHSS hostel" type place recently? I know this has sometimes happened with older more run down hotels in other towns I've lived in and the article suggests there are people "living" there as well as "staying" there.

I looked at the fire alarm and systems in there about 5 or 6 years ago. Absolute shambles and I’m amazed it’s been allowed to remain open in the interim

It’s a horrible eyesore on the Burnley skyline. I’m sure when it was built it looked impressive, a modern structure against the more traditional old buildings, but what a mistake that was.

Burnley has lost its way over the past 50 years in terms of architecture, and the council is to blame by not having set the standards high enough for developers live some loveley towns, such as Shrewsbury or York etc. The whole town is a mess really, and the newer buildings, such as the cheap and nasty block of flats near Trafalgar, and the replacement for the Mitre don’t give the town much hope.

Knock the Kierby down as soon as possible. It would be a start anyway.

I'm not sure. Anywhere with an established Premier League Club could probably fill a hotel weekends? I'm not saying we are completely cemented in the Prem yet but could be in a few years.

Completely agree. There is no logic or consistency with any of the architecture in town. The St Peters and the new 'superschools' are others that in 10 or 20 years will look even ore ridiculous than they do now!

They arent even 'character'.

The only positive is that Blackburn and Preston are even worse!

Small market towns are thriving now but sadly don't think we will ever be anything other than grim!

I believe Lord Byrom, was the original subject of the oft used quote, " Mad, bad and dangerous to know ! ".....

ALC appears to be his worthy successor !

Back in the 60s my parents would regularly go to "posh" dos there and it was very highly regarded. In the mid 70s as a student I got a part time job there waiting tables and it was still thriving and as mentioned was used by numerous visiting footy teams. I once knocked a bottle of water over Frank Lampard senior as I reached over to collect an autograph from Ron Greenwood. It's decline and demise has been long, slow and seemingly inexorable, but I'm not sure demolition is all that practical with the way it's literally tied up with other nearby businesses.

Someone has mentioned the fact that they used to advertise clean rooms on that big banner overlooking the roundabout. I always wondered if the unclean rooms might be cheaper.

It was taken over by UCFB before they left town and left that hotel and the Sparrow Hawk in a mess. But the Keirby should have been mercifully knocked down years ago. It's an eyesore.

I'm an out of towner so forgive me if I've missed something. UFCB has left and is now based at Etihad and Wembley. What has happened to the Sparrow Hawk and the development at the Circ? Park near the Circ on match days and only just realised no work has happened on it for a while.

Last time I went past the Sparrow Hawk (a week or so ago) there was scaffolding up and a TO LET sign. Not been used since UCFB moved out. I think the Keirby returned to being a hotel for a while but I reckon UCFB potentially still have a lease on the two buildings.

I didn't think the development near the Circ was anything to do with UCFB. Didn't know the work had stopped so maybe it was.
