Sigurdsson v Defour

I remember during the summer that a number of people were saying that Sigurdsson is a far better player than Defour.
If both were playing at their best would the same view be held now?

Different players but Sigurdsson will get more headlines because he scores more goals and gets more assists.

Defour is a conventional CM. Siggurdsson is a CAM. Sigurdsson is probably more talented but just too inconsistent. Defour is not far behind, and Dyche has made him consistent.

Yes.
I wouldn't swap em though. Defour is far too important in our team and I don't think Sigurdssons qualities would make up for what we'd be losing.

Defour makes us tick, but Sigurdsson is the more exciting player to watch, nice to have both in your side.

In the right system he does.
He didn't really at Spurs, was great at Swansea and hasn't found his feet yet at Everton.
I'd have him if Dyche believed he could do the job because he's got a wicked shot on him, full of running and is a very potent attacking threat.

Would you swap Sigurdsson for Hendrick would be the fairer question.

Really? Two totally different types of player who play different positions.

Possibly, depends which Sigurdsson turned up.

If both Sigurdsson and Defour were on the market in January, which one would demand a higher fee?
Clue - it wouldn't be Defour.

Only because Everton overpaid in the summer for SIgurdsson in the summer.

Right now it is yes, because this season to date he hasn't justyfied his fee.
If he'd been performing like he had done at Swansea then yes he would sell for more than Defour, I already know that.

If Everton had a target man like Swansea did then he would be just as good.
The one thing Big Sam will bring in, is a decent target man.

Yeah I know he will.
I do like Sigurdsson, with the right manager/system he's an excellent player and I would've liked us to sign him when he left Spurs.

He would sell for more than Defour regardless of how much Everton paid for him in the summer.
You clearly agree that he would sell for more, so I don't know what you're arguing for.

If we had Sigurdsson in our team would we be doing as well - based on his form so far this season, probably not. As has been pointed out Hendrick is the comparable player and he's probably a better bet in team that has to be effective without the ball.
If we didn't have Defour in our team would we be doing as well - again based on this season, definitely not. When we do get the ball it's important we make good use of it. Also, along with Cork, he always makes himself available to receive the ball - often in deep positions. Whilst I haven't seen much of Everton don't think that's a big feature of Sigurdsson's game.
Allardyce will get more out of him though and he's been a massive miss at Swansea.
In a World Cup season don't think it's a coincidence that one is the star player for his country and a guaranteed starter for them the other is battling desperately for a place in a team that includes some of the best midfielders in Europe.

Value for money it's clearly Defour.
Value to the team - Defour again.
Better season - Defour
Better player / career - Sigurdsson....so far.
£50m was a ridiculous price for Sigurdsson. He did great for Swansea, scored lots of goals and when they played Burnley he was usually streets ahead of any of our team. However, at Spurs he was pretty poor and I think Swansea only paid about £6m for him (may have been a bit more). Even with the way prices have rocketed he was worth maximum £25m and Swansea just caught Everton when they were desperate to try and get goal scoring players in.
As said they play very different roles on the pitch but would be good to have Icelands 2 best players in a burnley shirt - as long as we didn't lose Defour !

Career wise Defour beats him hands down with honours.

Yep he does - but he played for the best teams in Portugal and Belgium and both leagues are very weak compared to the Bundesliga and Premier League where Sigurdsson has played.
Let's be honest other than BelgianClaret none / very few of us had heard of Defour until we bought him. Even now he is hardly a household name in the Premier League and he is only just starting to come to the attention of most pundits and fans outside of Burnley.
Sigurdsson on the other hand has been a well established Premier League player for 5 years now.
As said I think he is massively over priced and I would not want him in our team instead of Defour.
Defour probably has more natural talent than Sigurdsson - if he was on Sir Alex's radar to sign for United as was rumoured before his bad injury then he clearly was a very good player.
The injury he got was that serious though I think there was a doubt he would ever come back to the kind of form and fitness we are seeing now.....if anybody knew that then his price tag would have been nearer to the cost of Sigurdsson than the bargain price we picked him up for.
The hard thing will be keeping hold of him if he carries on playing like he is - I honestly think he would get in most starting elevens in this league....which means he'd get in most teams in Germany, Italy, Spain, France etc - so what does that mean he is worth now ?!!!

I think most football fans had heard of Defour before we signed him.
He was highly rated as a youngster and the Man Utd thing was widely reported on as was this

You have to understand why Swansea valued Sigurdsson at £50M though, he was integral to them staying in the division which brought them £100M in TV monies. It was actually probably bad business in selling him, even for £50M because without him they're useless and look to be heading one way which will cost the club an absolute fortune.

I've known of Defour for years, just never ever expected to see him in English football.
I always rated him very highly and I'm still chuffed to bits that he's here.

Ask Jack Cork.
Defour all day long for me.
The guy has pedigree, he isn't just some bum we've stumbled across and Dyche has made him into this incredible player, he always has been.

Stupid comparison. Sigurdsson as our attacking midfielder under Dyche would be amazing. Even the staunchest of Hendrick supporters surely couldn’t dispute that Sigurdsson would be a big upgrade.

Completely different players. Comparison probably being made by people who keep saying move Defour into a n.10 role.
Defour is at best as we are seeing him now, pulling the strings in the deep lying midfield area.
Sigurdsson is a n.10 and would no doubt be unbelievable in this team with Defour threading balls through to that pocket.
I would love us to spend big (ish) on a winger and genuine n.10 in Jan. Someone with that extra bit of creativity to score a worldie/unlock a defence with clever dribbling/vision.

Sigurdsson has played a part in 5 goals in the last 7 premier league games. 3 goals and 2 assists.

To me, Sigurdsson is best in the number 6 role, not the number 10 as mentioned.
But, how mental is this - we're discussing if one of our midfielders is better than someone who moved for £45 million quid!
Mental and brilliant at the same time.

No. Sigurdson is a No 10. He is quicker, better dribbling and better at scoring goals. Would Defour score that goal that sigurdson scored yesterday - no.
Not taking anything away from Defour, he has his amazing qualities elsewhere because he plays in a very different position.
