If we finish 7th....
If we finish 7th....
What do we need to happen to qualify for the Europa League? Do we need the Europa League, Champs League and FA Cup to all be won by the top 6 clubs?

Re: If we finish 7th....
I think it just needs to be the domestic cups by a team who finishes in the top 6.

Just need the FA Cup and League cup to go to a team playing in Europe and we'd qualify. Europa league result makes no difference.

I agree with your point but think the wording is slightly wrong our greatest acheivement is probably the 1914 FA cup win - given the occasion and the significance of The FA Cup in 1914 or our first Championship win in 1920/21.
But finishing 7th this season would probably be the most difficult thing we've acheived.
Re: If we finish 7th....
Unless we win FA Cup too which would mean automatic qualification for group stages rather than possibly starting off at the 2nd round qualifying stage.burnley007 wrote:Worst thing about finishing 7th would be qualifying for Europe!!!

As this season the EL winners are guaranteed CL. England has 4 reps through co-efficient, giving possibility of 5 in total. If Arsenal were to win EL.

England have 3 reps in EL. Therefore 4 into CL and 3 into EL guarantees 7th a place in EL.

Re: If we finish 7th....
Leicester and Everton dropped points in winnable games today they would have expected us to lose so a decent day. With our points advantage we have every chance of being 7th when Big Ben chimes in 2018,plus we have played most of the top half away and we have players returning.Every incentive to crack on in 2018.

In fact I think mine runs out next year, so I'll have another 10 years of a claret passport touring Europe with Burnley FC.
I'm holding Sean Dyche to his promise to keep the club "moving forward."

The only downside to the Europa league.....lots of Sunday matches!

So with a 7th placed finish we're guaranteed a place in the EL even if Barnsley won the FA Cup and Spanish teams won both European competitions?piston broke wrote:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018–19 ... ons_League

Re: If we finish 7th....
Not too bothered about getting into Europe as that could really stretch us
in terms of depth of squad and number of games you may have to play.
More important to me is the extra money we may have coming in if we do manage to
finish 7 or 8th.
It could give us an additional 15m or so to add to the coffers if invested wisely could bring
us in one, possibly two players to help us strengthen the squad.
We'd need that as absolute minimum if we per chance we did qualify for Europe

I would have to agree. In this modern age the disparity in finance would make it a greater achievement(finishing 7th in May) than winning either of our two top flight championships.TheFamilyCat wrote:If we finish 7th it will be the greatest achievement in Burnley Football Club history, Europe or not.

Oh really? Greater than the 1960 First Division Championship? The resulting run of games in Europe? The 1962 FA Cup Final? The 1914 cup final?TheFamilyCat wrote:If we finish 7th it will be the greatest achievement in Burnley Football Club history, Europe or not.

Man of Kent, and the 1920-21 season, too. My grandad would always remind me of 'his' team of Halley, Boyle and Watson.

Re: If we finish 7th....
Will you finally acknowledge that Sean Dyche is the best thing that's happened to Burnley Football Club since the abolition of the Maximum wage?!

Re: If we finish 7th....
I believe we can finish seventh. I'm not saying we will but that I believe it is not beyond our lads.
When you think we played at OT with just one (Ben) of our regular defence, Tom included, and an advocate of defensive football says:
“I’m very happy with their [United's players'] character and part of that was also the way they played and tried to break down a very organised wall. I keep saying that to defend well is a quality and they defended very well. So also credit to Burnley to concede only two goals against such strong pressure.”
It is so, so much about our squad and then the eleven lads who start the game (plus subs). Non-Clarets will look for our leading goalscorer and see Chris Wood with four goals. They'll think "How can they be seventh?". Therein lies our strength. We have a significant number of contributors to our goal tally. If we did have a player who could score one in two/two and a half we'd be pushing for sixth. Chris Wood might still prove to be the man. He's been hindered by injuries and if he can get back to full fitness he could well start scoring more.

Re: If we finish 7th....
No history lesson required. I personally believe that finishing 7th in the modern era when there is such a gulf in the resources available would rank as a greater achievement than winning the league in an era when the playing field was much more level and we were regularly challenging to win it.Man of Kent wrote:Oh really? Still performing with Heaton, Lowton, Tarks, Ward, Brady and Wood all missing! Just shows how far we've come.
If we're still up there on February 3rd when we'll have played Spurs, Man Utd, Liverpool and Man City both home and away then I'll start to believe it.

Re: If we finish 7th....
If we qualify for Europe I wouldn’t care if it would stretch the squad. When was the last time we played in Europe? We should embrace it, accept that it may affect our champions league ambitions next season, and crack on. If we win it we will qualify for the champs league anyway
Re: If we finish 7th....
Surely everything has been better for Burnley than the abolition of the maximum wage? That single deed sent us and every other town club into decline.RalphCoatesComb wrote:Will you finally acknowledge that Sean Dyche is the best thing that's happened to Burnley Football Club since the abolition of the Maximum wage?!

I did not mean that the abolition of the maximum wage wage a good thing although it does looks like tat is what I meant.IanMcL wrote:Surely everything has been better for Burnley than the abolition of the maximum wage? That single deed sent us and every other town club into decline.
You are right. The abolition of the maximum wage was the catalyst for everything that followed and Bob Lord saw that coming.
What I meant was that SD is the best thing that has happened since that era.
I wonder when the SD detractors will finally eat their words!

Re: If we finish 7th....
I'd be willing and able to arrange packages for people if we end up with a Czech away trip
Re: If we finish 7th....
If, and for the moment it's a big "if", we were to play in the EL with SD still manager, I'm convinced he would put out his best team. It would be wrong not to. I'm fully aware of the risk of burnout but it would be ridiculous to have refound European football and then "devalue" our participation.
Re: If we finish 7th....
If I was a player who had won his way to the Champs League, I would be bit miffed if I did not get to play on the big stage.

Re: If we finish 7th....
How many would take the CL or EL followed by relegation?
I wouldn't. This is a growth business. European football needs backing up with a bigger squad on higher wages. Then the problems begin. Let's just build slowly and hang around for many years.
Sorry to be a killjoy.

Re: If we finish 7th....
My take on qualifying for Europe would be a further reason for Sean to stay on next year. There is no doubt other clubs will come calling at the end of the season, further progression, European football, another platform for Sean to develop his experience. Added together, and a nice bonus cheque, why would Sean leave.
