The Southern Daily Echo (Southampton) published its final Sports Pink on December 9, leaving just the Sports Mail, published by The News in Portsmouth, as the last surviving Saturday evening sports paper. I suppose that won't last much longer either. As many of us remember, the Evening Telegraph's Sports Pink was an institution back in the day.

If you missed the reading of the results on TV & radio, it was the only way to get them before the Sunday papers. They are from an era gone now and I'm surprised there were any remaining. Sad though, part of my early days as a football fan.

And there was always a picture of some first half action I always remember a pic of all the players being called to the middle by the ref because of the leg hacking going on YES it was against Leeds, still have some scrapbook copies.

Very much part of my early years following the Clarets too. Being the youngest of three lads in the house it was always me that had to trudge out in all weathers to buy it and invariably the last to read it. Always looked at the non-league scores and for some inexplicable reason always wanted Burscough to win. Perhaps it was the first three letters of their name.

Used to get ours from a Claret... Adam Blacklaw when he had the shop at the junction of Rimington Ave and Brunshaw Road, across the road from the Tesco which is in the old Brunshaw pub building. Before Adam, Tom Mullins had the shop

We used to get the Sports Mercury in Leicestershire, it wasn't pink, it was buff and nick named the Buff too. It had all the results though.

We had to wait until Wednesday, for a well read Pink to arrive in the post, along with a copy of the Express too. My Aunt never missed, bless her.

When did the Burnley Sports Pink cease to exist? I remember going to shop for my grandad to get one from Howard street newsagents

used to nip down to a corner shop on one of the fulledge streets, olympia? brockenhurst/athletic st, cant remember.
it was a fantastic shop, with a lovely old couple, so friendly. The shop was tiny, but they seemed to stock everything. including the pink.

My parents had the paper shop in Worsthorne for a couple of years around 82 to 84 I think and I seem to recall the last edition was during this time. I left school in 83 and I don't think it was going then but I may be wrong.

I was fortunate to keep hold of the very last edition of the Sports Pink.

It's dated December 17th 1983.

You might be thinking about Mrs Doherty's shop on the corner of Olympia and Mitella. They did literally have everything, all illuminated by a single unshaded bulb hanging from a wire that they only used to switch on when anybody came into the shop.

I have one too, also the Evening Star of that date. Both ceased publication after December 17, 1983. And it was the day my son was born...

sounds familiar, but the one Im on about was further up than mitella street. sort of half way between mitella and morse street.

I used to deliver them. 6 o'clock sharp start. Always somebody trying to cadge one when doing my round.

Actually you're correct, had to check the memory bank and it was the corner of Olympia and Lebanon, not Mitella. Been 30 years since I loved on Olympia and the years have not been kind to the memory

Would have been directly opposite Fearings transport depot

sounds about right Croydon, the man and his wife were clarets too, it was a dark little shop, lovely couple.

Outside the Turf you could buy an Evening Telegraph with ‘full half times’ at the end of the game. The Sports Pink came out a bit later but didn’t always have second half reports, just first half, half time and final scores.
