Wow..just read the that Brexit 2nd Referendum thread...there's some stuff going on, on there.. ..no comment from me, I wouldn't know where to start..[I've read every post.]

By way of diversion and lightening the mood [no one gets their teeth kicked in on this thread.. :o ] ..Bob Harris on Radio 2 has just mentioned that it's Steve Earle's birthday tomorrow [62] - I thought I would mention it here...[WIKI says it's the 17th, but I've started so I'll finish]

This is a slice of southern states country rock...with a bit of mandolin thrown in as well..and it works....89 million views suggests somebody knows something.

- bit of a lad is Steve..he's been married seven times...if you like country rock then please join in.

Copperhead Road. A classic. But only truly good thing he ever did. Heard he had multiple drug addictions.

Jason Isbell, Hipper, is a genius....listen to his albums Southeastern and Something More Than Free.....brilliant stuff and definitely from the same lineage as Steve Earle. Also good stuff with his band the 400 Unit.

Going back to Steve Earle it's a toss up between Guitar Town and the song on the link below for his best I think but this beauty has to win it. One of my favourite songs ever:

Steve Earle is brilliant, can blend country, bluegrass, rock and folk

Great on his own, with the Dukes, the Pogues or with his missus as a duo

Levrai, if you want the full story of the "Black Donnellys", you should read the book first, like I have. They were terrorizing the local population, and a vigilante group was formed. Also, they were Catholics in a largely Protestant area. Shouldn't have happened, but it did. You can now visit the museum in Lucan, Ontario. Interestingly, a good friend of mine who grew up with me in Brooklin, now lives in Lucan, which is a very small town.

Who Jason Isbell or Steve Earle? Both have had substance abuse issues and have cleaned up.

I was a big fan of Steve Earle's early stuff: Guitar Town, Copperhead Road etc & also think that he had a mid-career high (latish 1990s, post all the drug problems) with eg El Corazon & The Mountain .
A lot of his most recent stuff seems a bit routine (and more politicised) but I guess with the number of ex-wives he has, he's got to keep churning something out.
His son (not sure with which wife), Justin Townes Earle has become a fairly well known singer/songwriter now but it seems they don't get on fantastically well.

I have to say, I thought he was older than 62 but good luck to him - hope he can make another Copperhead Road/ Guitar Town some day soon.

Only 6 different women though. His 4th & 6th marriages were to the same woman. Talk about repeating the same mistakes!

toured heavily in the UK in the early 80s around the time of the Exit O album. Smaller venues mainly. Built up a bit of a cult following at the time. Saw him in Manchester a couple of times and in London. As soon as the success of Copperhead Road hit he went all mainstream (or rather, the mainstream grabbed him)

Guitar town album. Not Country enough for the country folk. Not rock enough for the rockers. But good enough for me.

levrai, I think you're implying that by never convicting anybody of the murders that it was a total miscarriage of justice. First of all, it was a vigilante group that carried out the murders, so it was virtually impossible to identify any one individual. Secondly, they had already totally intimidated the local constabulary, so anything short of calling out the army would have probably been ineffective. Those who live by the sword, die by the sword. In a way, I think the song is just Steve Earle's way of getting back at Ontario-native Neil Young, who had some pretty damning words about Alabama several decades ago.

Not really ontario I was just I was just quoting from the song with complete ignorance of any real life events referred to therein. I wish I was curious enough to research the background to every song I like, but when I first heard the song there was no internet. To be fair I also like Southern Man and lots more of his tunes (particularly Helpless) and rest assured I like all the Canadians that I have met and have enjoyed my visits to Canada (particularly Blues Fest in Ottawa).

In short I think you are amongst the good guys. Hope you have an enjoyable evening.

PS Steve Earle is texan., oh and I am going to see his most recent ex wife in concert at the end of the month. FWIW

We in Canada tend to lump all southern Americans together. "Redneck"" is one of the great derogatory terms of all time, and refers to most working-class Southerners. Of course, native-born Canadians like myself are totally smug looking down on the great unwashed. Wasn't it Def Leppard who wrote "Sweet Home, Alabama" in response to Neil Young? I guess that if you live in ignorance, you tend to carry on certain prejudices.

Lynyrd Skynyrd methinks, Def Leopard are from Yarkshire.

My prejudices on Canada are all affirmative but that's ignorance for you. Sometimes I'm right and oft-times not.

Lynard Skynard is right, of course, levrai. I knew that there was an "L" and some funny spelling involved. They're the ones who took an airplane for a joyride, buzzed their friends on the ground, crashed into an outbuilding, and wiped out half of the band. Not very smart, but typical for rednecks.

Can you say that ontario?

Seems a bit of an over generalisation and in no way applies to Steve Earle.

Your call, your prejudice.
