Looking at getting an SUV.
Anyone any thoughts on what to look at, or more importantly, what to avoid?

According to The Grand Tour last night, James May recommended a LW Ford Transit instead, Clarkson favoured a Ford Ranger/Raptor high powered pickup truck (or whatever the hell it was) but he said you can’t get one over here...

It does depend on Budget though and whether you want real 4x4 capabilities or just a Chelsea Tractor

Basic tough suv Isuzu rodeo Mitsubishi Montero Toyota Rav 4. Or go something fancy with seats ....

Dacia Duster 4x4 is good value but basic finish etc I have had one for over 100k miles with no major issues

I'd go for that Tesla SUV. it drives itself. 0-60 in 3.1 secs and only costs £156k

The Qashqai is great

BMW X2 looks very good.

I've had Duster 1.5 dci for a couple of years - very economical. All parts are Renault and mostly common with Nissan's Juke and Quashqai. I'm quite happy with Renaults but not everyone is.

I like the look of the new Citroen Aircross compact SUV, though
I've no idea of its handling, performance, etc. If I had the dosh, I'd
be looking at one.

I have a Mazda CX5, it's fantastic. But, I wish I had gone for the 2.5l engine instead of the 2l as it is gutless.

The 2.2 diesel is a gem, especially in 175bhp form

NISSAN QASHQAI 2.0 dCi Tekna 4x4 is what I went for. Not sure it is a proper 4x4 but I have used it when stuck on a pebbled beach. That model has good torque for towing. The interior is nice and I have not had any major problems with it, it’s done a lot of motorway miles over the last year.

Volvo XC60.

Porsche Macan does almost everything a car should do (except provide open-top motoring) and certainly everything you'd expect of an SUV. Don't be tempted by an unreliable Land or Range Rover!

Renault owns Nissan so if you ever hear anyone complain about Renault but likes Nissan just laugh at them.

If a Porsche is out of your price range look at VW/Audi, same company so you're getting the same basic stuff with different bodies/badges.

Your average SUV pretty much never goes off road, they're just a family car now.
I know some people who've got them because they feel safer in them compared to a normal car, higher up etc

Unless you're specifically after 4x4 capability then you've got a lot of choice.
Plenty of good ones out there and they're all fairly reliable nowadays.
It's worth taking note of the Grand Tour from last night, especially the electric boot door if you've got a dog etc.

Think about things like the lane assist stuff that's becoming more commonplace.

Seat Ateca Renault Kadjar and Seat Arona have all had good reviews.

Checkout Hyundai and the Tucson and Sante Fe. Some good PCP deals on offer and long warranty. I"m not an SUV fan but they have upped their game of late and are more reliable and don't look too bad.

I'd urge you to drive both and then reconsider. The Audi Q5 shares the same architecture (chassis / body) and the same parent company but the two vehicles are utterly different in their character and performance otherwise.

I like the look of the Peugeot 3008. Great looks..stunning interior and according to reviews quite a punchy engine. If i could afford one..would be my choice

Clarkson favoured the Ford F150, not the Ford Ranger. The F150 isn't available in the UK.

I have the same dilemma.

On one hand I couldn’t go with a VW (or arguably even a Mercedes or BMW) due to the diesel emissions scandal. It’s morally indefensible.

On the other hand I would like a 4WD for snowy or icy days, living at 200m above sea level, but don’t like to be one of those types living in the city who struggle to drive a huge SUV and block the entire view of the car behind it too. Boot space is important to me as is comfort.

I will probably go for a 4WD hybrid saloon and try to wait a year or two until the market slips as it surely will. I’ll decide which one then.

I said the same basics.

For example the brakes and suspension are the Porsche ones depending on the engine size.

Yes they will have difference characteristics etc, but the basics are the same.

The Lambo version probably shares some bits too, along with the Bentley version.
All from the same company overall.

Stay away from Citroen would be my advice....if they even do an SUV. Just got rid of my 3 year old Grand C4 Picasso that I had from new....I had nothing but trouble with it One of my biggest gripes was the control screen on the dash board....you’d get in your car and start it up, then you had to sit and wait for the slow unresponsive screen to come on before you could even turn on the demisters etc....everything was done via the screen...to turn the things up\down you were just sat there tapping none stop on this screen whist it was going in slow motion
Then there is economy mode....which would shut the car down completely if the engine wasn’t running, it made it so if you broke down it wouldn’t even let you put the hazard lights on or close any windows in economy mode....So if you were broke down and have to leave the vehicle and you couldn’t start it up, you’d have to leave it with the windows down and no hazards on..... absolutely ridiculous!

Then there was a problem with gearbox not engaging probably....which in fairness was a known problem and Citroen was aware of it and covered it on the warranty....but mine had to be done twice and it still wasn’t that great.

Then there was a real lag on the accelerator....it was about a 1 to 1.5 second lag, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but if you were setting off at a junction you had to remember that when you put your foot on the accelerator you wouldn’t go immediately, there was a delay before you started to move...they looked into this problem numerous times and experienced it for themselves but never managed to sort it out....

Sorry I’ve been rambling on.... I could keep going and going!!! Bottom line is....it looked really nice but was crap! Never again!

I suggested three cars earlier and would say that if it is in your price range then the Seat Arona would be the one to go for

I drove a demonstrator Hyundai Kona before Christmas through work. If I was looking for a car, a Hyundai, an SUV and an automatic wouldn't feature anywhere on my tick list. But I was impressed with it. It was a top spec model, so had heated seats, steering wheel, electric everything, heads up display, 4WD, Auto Braking Assist, Lane Departure Warning and countless other bits that I didn't have time to try out. It was a 7 speed automatic and the gear changes were barely noticeable. A long way from the first automatic car I drove, which was my Dad's 2.3 Ford Granada! It had 3 modes, Eco, Comfort and Sport. Most of the journey was in Comfort but I tried the Sport mode. It immediately kicked down from 7th to 4th and when I put my foot down went very quickly from 50 to 95 mph before I backed off. I looked the car up after I had driven it and it was a 1.6l turbo petrol engine with a 0-60 time of 7.6 seconds, so rapid for what it is.

Don't think I would buy one as an SUV isn't my thing, but if that is your market then this is a decent car.

It was shown after the VW scandal that most manufacturers were doing it, it's just that VW were the first to be found out. In fact some were doing it much worse than VW (I seem to recall it was a French one who were worst if I;m not mistaken).

I lived 1250feet above sea level (around 380m) for around 5 years and had no issues whatsoever in an old Mk4 Golf 4 motion getting around whilst all the BM's etc got stuck at the first hurdle. I've got a 2 wheeled drive car now but still go up to see relatives, and the one thing I will say is if you are in that kind of climate - get some WINTER tyres! They make a huge difference, especially with a good proportion of these SUVs people are on about being 2 wheeled drive

A friend bought a pre-registered car couple of weeks ago. It was delivered yesterday with additional 4,000 miles on the clock. Garage rep had been using his for daily business trips. Needless to say it has been returned.
