What's the lowest a team can finish in the PL and still qualify for the Europa League this season?
This obviously doesn't include a team from outside the top few winning the FA Cup.
I've just heard Joey Barton and the talksport presenter severely confusing themselves over this.
Does anyone know?

I think it's 7th.
But only if two other teams finishing 1st to 6th won the FA Cup and Champions League.

20th if they win FA or League Cup.
7th according to Wiki (assuming both cups are won by top 6).

Do Arsenal get into the Champions League if they win the Europa League though?
If so, doesn't that free up another Europa League spot?

Max of 7 English teams qualify for Europe.

Still on. Especially with a win saturday...
The Premier League is allocated three qualifying spots for the Europa League which nominally go to the team finishing fifth in the league, with the top four qualifying for the Champions League, the winners of the FA Cup and the winners of the Carabao Cup.
However with City triumphing at Wembley on Sunday and almost certain to finish in the top four, it means their Europa League qualifying spot will be handed down to the team finishing sixth in the league, which is currently Arsenal.
That would mean the winners of the FA Cup and the teams finishing fifth and sixth would qualify for the Europa League.
But if the FA Cup is won by a team finishing in the top five then their place in the Europa League is also transferred to the next best league finishers, meaning seventh would be good enough for Europe.
Of the current top five Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea remain in the FA Cup. Spurs face a Wembley replay with Rochdale tonight to reach the last eight while Manchester United host Brighton at Old Trafford in the quarter finals and Chelsea travel to Leicester City.
If one of United, Tottenham or Chelsea win the FA Cup then the seventh placed finishers in the league will enter the Europa League second-qualifying round.
* 8th placed will not qualify.

A special place will beheld open for Burnley, who will finish 6th and top the Fair Play charts!

So, as I understand it, this year we had/have five teams in the Champions League but only two teams in the Europa League because the maximum number allowed in European Competitions is seven.

We had five in the Champions League because Manchester United qualified as Europa League winners. Arsenal & Everton were the only two who were in the Europa League I think.

Whilst it might be a great opportunity for us to play in Europe, does anyone worry that should we get there then the extra games might disrupt or tire our team. Plus the fact that several games would be transfered from Saturdays to Sundays because of the midweek Europe fixtures?

Not too concerned BigF, we're unlikely to finish seventh. The team is running out of steam due to lack of strength in depth. It's part of Dyches continuing development of the first team and other areas of the club.
In the unlikely event of finishing seventh, even with a couple of quality additions to the team we'd really struggle to maintain momentum in the Premiership whilst playing in the various cup competitions.
Relegation could be a likely outcome.

Press are putting Sam under some pressure to step it up, they’ve lost their last four away games.
Nobody wants to finish 7th at the minute.
We win Saturday, we’re in with a chance. Still got Bournemouth, Leicester and Brighton at home. Some winnable away games.
Anything can happen.

Our aim should still to be to finish 7th particulary now the situation with injuries is easing. The fact 7th is a possibility at this time is a tremendous achievement by all concerned. If 7th was to happen - and clearly it's a tough ask - id love an opportunity to play in Europe despite the obvious point that it would stretch us massively because it might be the best chance for it to happen in my lifetime.

So if City win the Champions League (and the winner of that automatically gets into the CL the following season) and Arsenal the Europa thingyo wouldn't that mean potentially 6 English teams in the CL next season?
I didn't know that there was an absolute limit on English (and presumably other countries have similar restrictions, as appropriate). If so, could that mean, in the scenario above, that there could be 6 of our teams in the CL and just one (us????) in the Europa League?
Jeez - all too confusing.....

I keep writing us off for 7th but the fact that we're still there even after this terrible run makes me think if we can sneak a win on Saturday maybe we can have a half decent end to the season. Everton have been awful under Allardyce and I keep expecting Leicester to come on strong but doesn't seem to materialise.

Torn over this one.
On the one hand I'd love to see us in Europe but leaning towards too much of a distraction.

Would be fantastic. I never thought I would see us in Europe in my lifetime. People still reminisce and romanticize about our 60s European games. And with good reason.

I doubt us losing a two legged qualifying tie in July would vastly affect our league form next year

With it being called a league instead of cup format Dyche might be able to perform in it.

There's a limit of 5 in the Champions League. In that scenario the fifth team would be in the Europa League.

Great result today, pull away from Everton in the first of the games against those chasing us. Leicester lose points and then we have them in our next home game.
Come on Burnley lets do this!

Can't believe anyone would be anything but excited at the prospect of us being in Europe. Its not tin pot, some very good and famous teams in it especially when the knockouts begin.
Swansea had a game away at Napoli didn't they a few years back. Would be so special to have it at the turf, and for once an English club that would take it seriously.
3pts clear of Leicester. They have a decent run in but have to face us t the turf yet. Could be crucial

This is the last 16 below. Anyone who wouldn't want to be part of this is insane. We still look back on the 60s team and half of us weren't even born. Lets take the chance while we can!
5 of these clubs have won or been to the champions league final - Atletico, Arsenal, AC Milan, Dortmund and Marseile. Then even the likes of Lokomotive Moscow, Dynamo Kiev, CSKA, Lazio, Zenit and Sporting have an impressive pedigree in european competition.

So basically, if Man Utd, Spurs, Chelsea and City win their respective quarter finals in the FA Cup and we finish seventh we will get the last spot in the Europa League

We appear to be in the minority who are taking this into consideration. We haven't had the squad to cope with Premier League games and domestic cups, nevermind adding Europe in as well.

Be the worst thing that could happen.... Not a big enough squad to cope with competitive games in July.... Only big teams towards the end, by which time we'd either be out of the competition or looking at relegation, unable to cope with both competitions, let's not run before we can walk. If you want to go on the **** in Italy book a flight and enjoy it, but don't let it involve BFC

Doubt we'd get anywhere near the last 16 but even if we got knocked out in the qualifying rounds, going to some European town/city in the middle of August with 5-10k Burnley fans to have a party and watch us play football would be getting to do something I thought I could only ever dream of.
Micky Mouse cup or not what an achievement and experience it would be to just get there even if we fall at the first hurdle

Think we'd go straight into the 3rd Qualifying round played 9th & 16th August so would be a perfect final warm up to the season . Also people under estimate the quality of European football and we'd probably only play 1 or 2 rounds so would hardly trouble our squad

Agree, it's pretty straight forward getting to the knock out stages, being an English team we'd be one of the top 2 seeds in the group I'd imagine?

I remember Everton having an appalling record in their games following a Thursday flying out to God knows where. It certainly had an impact on their league performances.
I'd rather we put 2-3 more seasons in the Premier League under our belt and have pretty much no chance of going down - then, when we have a deeper squad, have a play with Europe.

I would 100% want European qualification - this would be the pinnacle of what realistically we could ever achieve as the smallest PL club in history.
I appreciate the logistical issues of Thursday football, but c'mon, if someone would have promised Europa League qualification at the beginning of the season, who honestly wouldn't have taken it?

Id prefer we wait 5 seasons dont bother with the Europa League win the double then go and play in the Champions league but life doesnt work like that. In a few years we could be a mid table Championship team and then slowly slide down the leagues so I'd rather take our chances while we can

Ok, let's try a different angle.
I think, if we were to qualify for the Europa and get past the initial stages (very doable), that our Premier League form would suffer. And I don't think we have the depth in squad to cover both. Therefore, I think our place in the Premier League could be under threat and not worth the risk.
If we finish 7th, fine, then we could go into Europe. But I'd prefer to finish 7 and have not qualified.

Sod it.
I want to see my team in Europe.
This season could be the only chance we get to achieve that.
