Elise Christie..

Elise Christie has crashed out again (500 m) she was very upset after the race... the latest video footage shows that she was taken out and that caused the crash - her left hand touching the ice was clattered into by the skater behind, and this caused her to lose control.

All probably accidental, there is contact allowed in the races... it’s fairly physical.
She still has her two best events to come.. sad to watch though.

Pity. Felt sorry for the Korean! She seemed to get the wrong end of a push.

Yep it's sad I really felt for the girl, a huge amount of pressure on her and such a unfortunate way to go out, hope she's gonna bounce back though.

How the judges could DQ the poor Korean girl is unreal. Held her position behind the leader and the Canuck just shoved her out of the way.
Hope Elise Christie hasn't got an Olympic jinx. She wouldn't be the first who never seem to come home with a medal.

Yes there was contact.....

..... so she had every right to go down.

Was genuinely concerned for Elise there. She did not need to be on camera so soon after, and the BBC would have shown far more class by interviewing a coach instead.

BBC knew that she would be an emotional mess - so they thought it would make good TV.
All this rubbish about Clare Balding and the rest of them in the studio being in bits about the fall and and her reaction but yet they still interview her as soon after the race as they can....she was crying as soon as she fell apparently so she`s hardly going to be composed and rational about it 2 minutes after especially after virtually having a breakdown after the last Olympics.

Very strange decision to disqualify the Korean when it was clearly the Canadian who pushed the Korean (the Canadian also pushed the Brit during the race)

Im feeling overly protective of the poor girl tbh. 4 years work and it can be taken away by something beyond your control again has to be heartbreaking

The only upside is she has 2 more good gold medal chances, surely her luck has to improve sometime.

It's speed skating. I can't believe you've missed all the other speed skating threads over the years. This lot are always on about it.

It's a rough old sport for sure.

I saw the Brit lad was the only one in his heat with Gold blades, he came last by a long way Elise is World Champion but this is the Olympics. She is the fastest girl there BUT she wore Gold boots in the final and was knocked over.

Keep it modest!

It seems that Speed Skating is one of the few events where the medals are decided before the event - a bit like some Premier League games where the points are decided before the game......!! Christie was taken out deliberately by the Dutch girl who clearly saw her chance and deliberately moved her right foot to upend Christie, a definite red card not seen by the judges !!

It just shows even video replays the referees can still get it massively wrong. In both final races involving Christie the Canadian was the one doing the pushing and causing the crashes yet she ends up with a medal.

I felt sorrier for the Korean than Christie. To lose the silver medal in her home games for basically nothing was so unjust.

The Beeb stated yesterday that gold boots were worn to denote a current world champion

Poor draw after the semis due to a 5th person being added to the final didn't help her in the slightest

She has the base speed to beat them all but coming 2nd in the semi final was the reason for a poor draw.

I hope she puts it all together in the next discipline and takes the Gold she so desperately craves and probably deserves.

What I don't get is

1/ the incident on Tuesday Christie is taken out by the Canadian woman coming from behind her and knocking her sliding hand away causing the crash - Nothing is done

2/ Today Christie crashes out and is penalised for the crash with the Chinese woman for not being far enough in front at the point of collision

How the f##k does that stack up

With Rachel Riley in the lead role? After she’s learned to skate, obviously.

Taken out again but refs blamed her. I think the chinese knew Christie was going quicker around the bend and just lost her skate. Giving Christie a penalty was the easy option for the refs so they didn't have to reinstate her.

Elise Christie goes again this morning in the 1000 metres...her favourite event.

Her ankle is swollen from her crash the other day, but the doctor says she is about 80/90 % and she will be able to race.

i am not an expert on this sport but to me she looks like she has been terribly unlucky; she crashed twice but was taken out both times.

She goes in Heat 5 at about 10.15am - the semi's are on Thursday if she gets through.

There wasn't 4 years ago and the same thing happened. Ridiculous that they can disqualify a skater without having to explain the reason and there is no method of appeal.

Makes the bias by referees towards the big clubs in the Premier League look tame in comparison.

I have no interest in the Winter Olympics but this thread is fantastic.

As far as I can make out, one of our athletes has fallen over in all three of her races.

Some true Eddie the Eagle spirit about her.

I recommend Elise has a go in the 3,000 meters women's relay. From what I could tell, there are several members in each team - those not currently racing skating round in the centre of the track - and, you can change from one racer to another at any time, just by entering the track and being tagged by your team mate. Just watched the final: Korea finish first - but question about whether they will be penalised for taking Canada out a few laps before the end; China finish second and Italy third, having been brought down earlier in the race. Then the judges do their "var" review, two penalties announced, China are disqualified and Canada are disqualified. Seems whatever Korea did it was "ok." So, Korea gold, Italy silver and Netherlands - who weren't even in the race, but had won the "B final" are awarded bronze.

Fantastic spectacle - makes offside decisions look just "easy peasy..."

If you think Christie was hard done by you should have watched the womens relay final.

Koreans do a late change, take out the Canadians when the Korean handing over fell yet the Canadians get disqualified and the Chinese who did nothing wrong all race also get disqualified and Korea end up with the gold. Barmy or bent I'm not sure which ?
