You bought fish and chips in the Chelsea/Fulham area? What interest rate did you get on the mortgage you had to take out to pay for them may I ask?

I somehow doubt the best fish and chips are in a place not only in London, but in that area of London. Part of getting good grub is always getting it at a good price.

I live in London and hardly ever have fish and chips down here as they are generally overpriced, poor quality, with the skin on and there's rarely peas, gravy or curry sauce.

There is a chippy called fryers delight in theobalds road where they cook in dripping. It is dear compared to Burnley but pretty good by London standards.

There’s also Central St fish bar.

One of the best in London IMHO.

The best fish and chips in London can be bought at Kennedy's in Goswell Road Islington, just below City University Campus.

Golden Union Fish Bar, Poland St, just off Oxford St. I went there with Lady Beamish and the kids last year. It was really good. We sat down but they do takeaway. They also had a good choice of London based Craft Beers, too.

Mr T’s Fish and Chips, Southwold.

So good in fact that I refuse to have F&C’s from an inland chippy.

Always remember going to a chippy near Wembley, after the play-off final. A fellow claret had just been served, and was heavily in discussion with owner about his order. He'd had a good day on the swill, as had I, but I swear he was close to tears when they said they didn't do peas or gravy

The Laughing Halibut on Strutton Ground (near St James's Park tube station and New Scotland Yard) is excellent. Good portions and they do proper chip shop gravy and mushy peas too. You can sit in as well, it's one of the old fashioned ones with formica tables. The only one I've found so far that does gravy. Aggi will probably have a few suggestions too if he sees this, although don't think he's made it to the Laughing Halibut yet.

:D Went Spurs away with my mate and his dad once, on the way back i was genuinely scouting tripadvisor along the motorway to find the first chippy on the way back north that did mushy peas and gravy.

It was just past MK if i remember rightly :D

One of the best Fish and Chips that I've had was about 35 years ago just off the North Circular Rd.

I can't remember where or what the chippy was called (I can't be expected to remember everything) but I do remember that the fish was Rock Salmon. 'kin huge lump of fish.

For years the chip 'oles around Pendle have been a complete let down, which has been mainly down to shite potatoes being used and crap oil.

The Burnley chippy (we call it that for obvious reasons) Holt's in Nelson has recently restored a little faith in Fish and Chips.

We do get it here, "Ryby and Chips" being th e main shop, but im not sure if its me not eating batter much, or the way they make it, but i get hellish cramps off it now. I could risk a lightly battered but it doesn't half take the enjoyment away

I went to Rick Stein's in Padstow Cornwall in I think 2013. There was quite a queue, but I'd say they're some of the best I've tasted.

Heading that Ball did you no favours!! Now back to the fish n chips. Barnoldswick chippy in the square is the best around these parts.

Worst fish and chips I ever tasted was a chippy outside boothferry Park, Hull, back in the 70s. I swear this is no lie the fish came on the bone with batter on.
I do prefer fresh fish on the bone and I love the skin but not wrapped in batter, it was a nightmare to eat.

Ended up with pizzas!! Might try your recommendation tonight though!!

London is one of the most exciting and diverse food capitals of the world. You could only find people on this board going to the capital and going to a chippy. You couldn't make it up.

As a student in East London in the early 80's, I enjoyed dirt cheap pie and mash and traditional English fayre in the many small cafes around East Ham, Upton Park and Plaistow. I also recall the mobile shellfish bars outside the larger pubs but I was never brave enough for the jellied eels.
As with so many other things it all seems to be aimed at a more 'sophisticated' market and tourists these days and they charge the Earth for it.

I find top quality fish and chip shops a bit thin on the ground to be honest.
Post 4 references the Fryers Delight in Holborn which is a belter..sit down in that one.

There was/is a decent one on Endell Street on the Edge of Covent Garden.

The best one I know by miles is the Seashell on Lisson Grove, just down from Lord’s - that is famous, been there about 60 years and is top quality. It’s a bit pricier but worth it.

Your response is a perfect example of why I can’t be bothered posting on this message board very often, because plonkers like you are knocking about with patronising “you don’t want do it like that” comments.

There are loads of reasons why your food snobbery sounds ridiulous and ill thought out. You have no idea why I might be wanting fish and chips yet you’re prepared to knock me for wanting them! I could be a food critic who is tired of top nosh, a visitor from abroad who fancies trying the UK’s national dish, or I could actually live in London and have finally eaten every dish the capital can offer and now have just one left to tick off, and it’s fish and chips!

But ultimately, it’s got f’all to do with you what I fancy for tea, so wind it in!!

I've been to the chippy Westy mentioned ... it's in Dawes Rd called Baileys .. they do ice cream too lol.. recommended . Get tube to Fulham Broadway . 10/15 min walk from tube . Well worth it

Usually stay at Premier Inn on Cromwell Rd ....

There's an Italian called La Pappardella on old Brompton Rd which is cheap and they do huge portions . Nice little place

And a takaway pizza place on same side as Earls Court tube .. as you walk towards Kensington High st .. very nice

Often pop in to the Seashell on the way back from Lord’s -first class place. Worked in Westminster until recently and the Laughing Halibut is also excellent. Can be busy at lunch time though.

One or two places down here starting to serve gravy, though usually in a separate tub after being warmed up in a microwave. Very rare to see it served in a tray with chips. Sadly.

If any Clarets find themselves in this neck of the woods, I can recommend The Stubbington Chippy and also Karen's Plaice in Lee-on-the-Solent. A good chip with plenty of salt & vinegar is one of life's simple pleasures. There is nothing worse than an anemic / soggy chip.

I recommend The Ideal Fish bar in Pinner. Useful location for London games as there's a car park that's free on Saturdays right next to the tube station. Good links to the the M1 and chippy is very near to the station. It's not particularly cheap but portion sizes are massive and can be shared. Excellent cod and haddock and chips always cooked to perfection.

Apart from the lack of gravy, most of the chippies round this way are pretty good as long as you stay away from the pies.

Having said that my closest one is all decked out in sparkling white, big glass frontage, and completely clinical. The result of this is that it's almost always devoid of customers, despite being "award winning" apparently

People don't want poncey wannabe wine bars when they get chips so I drive 2 miles up the road to the one owned by some Cypriots. Amazing fish & chips plus they always give us a bottle of wine at Christmas to thank us for our custom

The chippy is worth a visit . Try it before you go.. the portions are big there too .. and if it's not busy you can eat in ... should be ok on a Sunday

Try it before you go if you can

Also it's worth a walk thru Brompton Cematary .. and Stamford Bridge is adjacent to it ..

Let us know how you get on !!

I think you’re on your own there mate, but I guess you’re probably used to it? It’s not compulsory to be a smart arse, so if you don’t know any decent chippies in London then maybe try another thread perhaps?
