Lets get one thing straight we are not going down

A chum who has just returned from Canada and who is a mathematician, met another ace mathematician/statistician out there
who has worked out all the possible results and permutations of teams below us and calculated that BFC can NOT go down, mathematically impossible.
That was when we had 36 points and today we got to 37.
That's the good news then.
I therefore dozed happily in the sunshine.

Tell your mathematician some of us were saying this in October.

if the large hadron collider malfunctions again, and we end up in a parallel universe, it is possible, being a claret, you shouldn't take anything for granted.

Oh No, I backed us at 2000/1 to go down, what a load of ********, are they 100% sure we are still 500/1 you know?

So, as expected, all those on here claiming that it may take more than 40 points this season, were talking complete poppycock!
Que sopresa!

The same story was on the Beeb:

Makes it even more of a farce how we still haven't experimented and instead stuck doing the same things that haven't worked in 3 months.

That thing on the Beeb talks a lot about past history and past averages etc, but doesn't appear to be categorically saying the Burnley can't possibly go down. They haven't included us in their table fair enough, but they haven't said 37 points will be enough beyond any shadow of doubt, I don't think.

That's because they don't care about us... oh hang on, they do... and all the refs are against us too, and will do anything to get us relegated, like yesterday, where Madley decided to start playing instead of officiating.

Probably because the article was about 40 points!

If this is true, then I wonder if any bookies will take a bet on us to stay up, even if it's 1/500.

Agreed Spijed, so why are we not included in the list of "possibles" and given a % score like the others? Am I missing something?

If you have a few quid to tie up between now and may you can lay us at 520/1 to go down.

Agree. We should be going for it against the likes of southampton. Tbh even against the likes of utd.

I can't believe it's mathematically impossible for us go down, if bookies will still take a bet. Unless, they're going to earn more from the interest, having the money in their bank instead of the punter's.

So contrary to the title of the thread, in 16 posts we still haven't got it straight!! That's UTC for ya!!

And can we please acknowledge that just because we aren’t going down neither the players nor the manager are immune from criticism/scrutiny

It’s not mathematically impossible at all.....your friend is talking bull if the story is even true!
If we don’t pick up another point all season and we ship loads of goals the teams below us only need 3 wins and a draw out of their last 10 games for us to drop into the bottom three....
Highly highly highly unlikely....but not mathematically impossible!

It is not mathematically impossible. We won't but we
could mathematically still finish bottom.
UTC!
Edit: 5 mins too late

DSR did an excellent analysis based on the 40 point scenario (#19). Perhaps the total has now changed with one game more being played.

Sorry to break this to you Dave but your mates need to do a maths refresher.
It isn’t just possible for us to go down, it is possible for us to finish bottom.
We won’t of course, I’ve been led in the sunshine for two months, so to speak.
It isn’t that hard a spreadsheet because there are only approx 100 games left with 3 possible results each. The best thing to do though is the use one of the excellent websites like
http://www.thefishy.co.uk. You can choose which teams you want to predict results for, and they will do the rest based on recent form. I predicted pessimistic results for us and the bottom seven, and we finished bottom.
The odds are probably about 100,000,000-1 so if the pessimists stick £10 on, they’ll be billionaires
