Game going ahead?

Right - setting off from Nottingham, oop north, on Friday morning and staying over for the match (all, in theory i.e. the travel and the game)
Any early thoughts/info on whether the game is likely to be in danger of being called off? (If it is, will just go on pub crawl round Waddington if we manage to make it there!)

The pitch is perfect and they have enough time and money these days to grit all the walkways to the stadium.
Should definitely be on.

Pitch is fine. Access to burnley and the stadium itself less so

Northern Rail on strike on Saturday and with the further weather, according to the news, on tomorrow and Friday it could well be called off for safety reasons. Nothing will be wrong with the pitch but it will be down to supporter safety getting too and getting away from the stadium.

Thanks guys. Think we'll take our chances. Worst case scenario (I hope) is snowed in, in the pub for the weekend!!

T.V games don't get called off Sky wouldn't allow it.

Last game called off at the Turf was over eight years ago now. As said, there will be absolutely no problem with the pitch, it could only be subject to spectator safety outside the ground and we've had plenty of warning.

Turf will be fine, its just how bad it gets for transport and parking locally. The side streets never get gritted, and the forecast isn't great.

The Stoke home game when Steve Davis was going to be in caretaker charge? Even then that was a supporter safety issue wasn't it and nothing to do with the pitch itself.

I'm sure the Wimbledon game (circa 2003?) was because of exceptionally high winds.

Did the club ever used to close the Bee Hole End for safety reasons due to snow/ice but have the rest of the ground open?

It was - lot of snow came down on the Friday and think was called off even that day, but as you say, nothing to do with the pitch.
Since then we've had the new pitch so other than very extreme conditions I can't see that ever being unfit.

Its all down to health and safety, which as we all know goes over the top these days, hopefully the roads round the Turf will be well gritted, make sure you set off in plenty of time, i know Everton have put free travel on for their fans due to rail strikes.A lot of snow is forecast but i hope our game survives and we all get back home safely with 3 points in the bag, wherever your travelling from take your time and get to the game in one piece utc

The QPR game was the first game that I was taking my 5 year old grandson to watch and I drove down from Ashington to Sheffield and then across to Burnley and when I was in the area I heard that the game was off because an 18 year old QPR player had been killed in a car accident in the early hours.
From memory there were no other games around in the local area so he never did see his first game on that day!

Oh yeah, I remember that now. Thought it was odd having a game called off in August.
Re the Wimbledon game, I think I remember being outside the Black Bull in a queue of traffic and the radio told us the winds were strong enough to blow 15 stone men from the longside upper. It was a late call off, 2.30 appen?

Interestingly, consideration is shown for the state of the pitch and underfoot conditions around the vicinity of the ground. We are currently in the grip of severe, exceptional weather and sitting outside for any length of time would,at best, be seen as irresponsible. Games have been postponed for snow, ice, high winds, fog etc. and understandably so. Current conditions,I think, should also be worthy of consideration.

The club held an open training session on the pitch that day, if I remember correctly.

Quite a bit earlier than that. I had the misfortune to walk down the touchline that afternoon in front of the Longside and then Jimmy Mac. It was around 1:30 and you could hardly stand on your feet it was that strong.

I've flown over from Spain to get this match in (and possibly some others) so it had better be on. Also, a couple of days ago I was walking my dog on the beach in Spain in 18 degrees sunshine, now I am in Siberian Burnley, what a ddifference!

I remember the called off Stoke game in 2007 well. I flew over from Philadelphia for it,my first game in three years. I got to the ground before hearing it was off. I was really down that day.

That list of postponed games has to be incomplete.
We didn't play a match in January & February of the 62/63 season.so surely we had more than just one home match postponed during those 2 months.

Was it Leicester where the game was abandoned during the game because the pitch was a swimming pool? Must be early 2000s.

It was New Year's Day, but I can't remember which year. 2004?
Also happened against Port Vale on boxing day back in the 90's. They were leading at the time and we won the rearranged game!

No rain or snow forecast after today till Sunday (sleet) so you should be fine mate. We just need that win to warm up the temperature.

We all must remember the 2-0 win over Arsenal's youngsters in our cup run. That was played in snow and before we changed to the super-duper turf we now have.

I think the list merely refers to postponed games that had a programme issued for the game, so appen during 62/63 the club knew well advance and didn't print a programme for it.

The main roads were all clear this afternoon around the ground. Buses were suspended for a short time when the blizzard was at it worst. All running now. The only way this game would be called off is if there is severe weather on the day. Weather forecasts seem a bit mixed but it looks like the temp will be just above freezing with a 10 to 20 % chance of precipitation, rain or snow and a light breeze. I reckon we'll be on as that won't cause enough disruption to stop it. I highly doubt the train strike will have any bearing on the decision, that's a dangerous precedent to set.

I travelled up Mel from Hatfield at the time with my brother and a mate, we had a corporate as well!! The food was OK but we rushed it to get going back home.
We bumped into the Wimbledon squad at a service station where Warren Barton confidently told us that Burnley called it off as we had a few injuries and were scared to play the Dons with a weakened team!!
The official reason we were given was that the Ground Safety Officer asked for it to be called off for safety reasons, there was a slightly loose ad board on the top front of the DW Stand and he was afraid the high winds would dislodge it.

There is no way that a premier league match should 've postponed. It would demonstrate an inept approach to a major event by any authority with a say or involvement.
The view to the Pennines should be superb!

I can remember a pre season friendly played at Folkestone being abandoned because of floodlight failure - the announcement was “the game has been abandoned because some bright spark has nicked the fuses” - can’t remember who we were playing though - might have been QPR or Folkestone.

I remember driving all the way to chesterfield on Boxing Day to park up and be turned away at the turnstiles. I’m 44 and I must have been 17 ish at the time.
Self edit-just read list above, must have been New Year’s Day one, and six years out on my he at time. Funny how the grey matter starts to struggle!!

A friend has travelled up to Glasgow for the Film Festival only to find that the first night has been cancelled with the cinema closing at 4pm so that staff can get home safely due to the severe wintry weather.
If indoor events are being cancelled due to severe weather what guarantees for sport?

As Far as I recall, that New Years day and the original Rochdale away of 91/92 (was it March?) are the only times I have travelled only for the game to be called off.
For the Chesterfield game we had got as far as the Barnsley turn off on the M1 when we saw Claret scarves flying out of car windows going the other bloomin' way.
