For those that are old enough, does no one remember 1981, this one has still a bit to go to catch up to that one, although perhaps we might get there, although it's the sky game and they usually do everything possible to get it on, I've a feeling Saturday could be in jeopardy.

1963 was horrendous, and I was 11 at the time and thought it was great.

late 70's and early 80's it would regularly be up to a foot deep and last a few weeks - no school closures then from what I remember - snow boots were popular back then and we would just walk to school across town without any worries, even go out in it for games (couldn't miss playing football) if possible.

The winter of 1963 was pretty bad. It dragged on for months. In Whittlefield, the snow was up to the windowsills. I can still remember Jacksons the milkman coming up our street who had a horse and cart with chains on the wheels. Football was badly affected and matches postponed week after week,

1962/63 & 1981/82 are the worst winters I can remember but I'm told that 1947/47 was the worst of the lot, that's when we ended up playing a game in June.
Driving to and from Colne last night, the conditions were as bad as I've seen in a good number of years though.

I agree 1963 was bad, I lived in Herne Bay in Kent and the sea froze, I now live in Rochdale and no sea to freeze but I haven't seen Hollingworth Lake yet !

The 1962/63 winter - we played Sheffield Wednesday at home on 29th December and it was one of a very small number of games to go ahead. Although we played cup games in horrendous conditions, we didn't play another league game until 2nd March at Sheffield United.

Nothing is spared the wrath from the UK's fear culture.
Now stay in your homes and check your yogurts.

Bunch of sissies!
My fave was the blizzard of '86. Entire city was shut down, and I went to work the next day on skis. I worked in a beer shop, and chaps were turning up with snowmobiles towing sleds and piling them up with as much beer as they could carry. I ran out of small change, so the tips were awesome.

The local supermarket has been stripped of bread and milk for the last two days by people panic buying. I pity some people.

This weather's been mental. In Puy du Dome we had close to a foot a couple of weeks back and it kept being topped up over the course of a week, couldn't get my van down the track. Then that thawed, a few days of cold sun and then this -12 business but with no frost, just solid ice and bitterly cold. Yesterday I was working outside all wrapped up to buggery, layer upon layer on with a cosy boilersuit on top of everything...24 hours later and its 15°, sunny, no wind and I've got a t shirt on outside. Crazy weather.

Hollingworth Lake froze solid in the winter of 62/63, we all walked across it and the pleasure boat Lady Alice was trapped in the ice. Stayed like that for several weeks.

I remember that winter well as I was about 12 at the time.
Still got into school though without them being closed at the first sign of a snowflake
If the snow was too deep for for my push bike I used to walk

I remember building igloos at Lowerhouse Primary that winter.

That doesn’t sound the most sensible of things to do.

The difference is, its regular and consistent in those countries. Yesterday was as bad as I had experienced.
Did make me laugh though. Meeting in London, all the northerners made it and most south of stoke didnt

Just a heads up as 1963 has been mentioned...winter watch 1963 is on bbc4 at 10pm... Looking back to that year I was in the ebeneezer cubs on colne road.cant believe on one shocking night we all went on manoeuvres down heasanford and up hagg wood.with the biggest snow drifts I've ever seen..probably in a duffle coat and Wellingtons somehow we got back in one piece to drinks of bovril.as cubs we were under 11 years old. The mind boggles!!

As an example, I took this back in 2013 down my street (I've moved now). There's actually a car under that mound of snow on the right. Growing up in winters like this make weeks like we've just had fairly easy to deal with in comparison to others. The issues this country has is that we aren't geared up too well for extreme weather cases, and people generally aren't used to it, but like anything, if you're sensible enough, drive to the conditions etc., then it's fine.

I tried to get from Padiham to Haslingden four times today but the A56 Padiham Bypass was closed due to a number of wagons belonging to a local haulage company attempting, but failing, to reach the motorway network. Accrington was log jammed and the Burnley to Rawtenstall road was, apparently. not meant to be any better.
I have, therefore, spent my time today planning for the next few days at work.
There is no substance in the accusations on various social media sites that I was spotted in a shop purchasing a Toboggan around Lunchtime.
