I met Sir Roger Bannister Bannister a few years ago when he came to open a sports centre at the school in London where I worked at that time.

He was an old boy of the school, and the sports centre was being named after him. I got introduced to him and he wanted to know how the school was

doing, in particular my own department. What a lovely man he was, really with it and so articulate and smart - he was really posh and I could tell his

life had been very different to mine.. :D - we had a glass of wine each and chatted for about ten minutes.

Fair play to him for his massive sporting achievement back then, and the wonderful medical career that he had subsequently.

RIP.

Not certain about this, but I thought he was brought up at the building in Barrowford which is now a heritage centre.

Has ancestral links to our area. Father born in Trawden and married in Burnley before moving to London. Links also to Bannisters who founded Boundary Mill.

Another milestone in history bites the dust.
He was always a milestone for me,a time to aim for, a target that would justify my effort. Never to be achieved but always
Sought.
RIP A great athlete.

He broke that record in the days when athletics was amateur and not tainted by doping.

Didn't realize he had trained to become a neurologist which is said to have given him a unique perspective when he developed Parkinson's Disease.

Outlasted those who paced him for the record in Chris Brasher died quite young aged 64 in 2003 and Chris Chataway who died in 2014 aged 82.
