Connelly scored the other goal in that game and it was the one that confirmed our qualification for the finals in Chile. Pointer was never selected again.

It's incredible to think that was Pointer's last appearance for England.
Very entertaining and informative article, Tony.

No other explanation as to why our players were either largely or totally ignored back in the days when we had such a superb team. I really do believe that you got selected based on who you played for. And to this day it still really annoys me that Brian O'Neil wasn't capped. Absolutely ridiculous.

We know it was the case back then and definitely so in the 70's.
I don't think that Southgate is/will be like that though.

I was at Sunderland to See Tom Heaton get his first cap and I was in Dortmund to see Michael Kean's debut.
Hairs stand up on your neck? My chest was pounding and I felt quite emotional as I never thought I'd see an active Claret in an England shirt.
My enthusiasm for the England team s is only because of the inclusion of Clarets in the squad these days. I was caught out by Jack Cork's call up so I missed his appearance but I'll be in Amsterdam for the Netherlands game and at Wembley for the Italy game.

One big difference now is that the big clubs don’t have teams with lots of English players. I think that’s what brings Southgate here so often, either that or he likes the catering in the directors lounge.

Didn't Billy Hamilton play in the 82 World Cup while at Burnley?

I was at that Portugal game at the old Wembley in 1961 on a school trip. I remember how proud I was to be a Clarets supporter and how the others on the trip wanted to know more about Burnley FC after Pointer's and Connelly's contribution.

Quite incredible that Brain O'Neil didn't win a number of caps. The reason Nobby Stiles and yes he played for a big club.

Am I correct in thinking it was Joe Mercer who capped Dobo and Alan Stevenson was on the bench?
I remember Frank Casper getting a run out in a Football League X1 and Paul Fletcher must have been close, it wasn't a great era for CFs.

No. It was Sir Alf Ramsey who gave him his first cap with Stevo on the bench. We were playing at Man United that night but Liverpool were playing Leicester in an FA Cup replay which ruled both Clemence & Shilton out.
Dobbo then played for Mercer & Revie but Stevenson was never called up again.

If Nick Pope doesn't get called up it'll be an absolute travesty given the current standing of Hart and Forster and the erratic form of Butland.
Tarky is made for England. A no nonsense centre half who can play. He could go onto great things.
However, the one that gets me is Ben Mee. A natural left sided centre half. How he's never been considered is beyond me!

He’d gone to Everton then. Revie was bad news for Dobbo, he just wasn’t his kind of player.

Fingers crossed here.
When you look at the current form of a lot of the established squad, there has to he an excellent chance.
I won't count my chickens, but any that get the call will have fully deserved it.

Wonder if it had anything to do with Bob Lord rubbing people up the wrong way ?
Also why did Phil Gray leave use ? He seemed to have a very brief spell with us ?
I would hope Pope and Tarkowski get a look in at least.

Doubt it was Lord - it was just that the big clubs tended to get their players picked.
Gray was left out after a few games and I think he threw his toys out of the pram so we quickly got shut of him. He went to Oxford.

Selection by committee in the early days. Probably a you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours deal.

Committee selection ended when Ramsey became manager. It didn't help us get players in.

Maybe if Adamson had taken the England job, the 1966 side would have been built round Burnley players!

I think at the next squad announcement Tarks and Pope have an outstanding chance of being included. I think Mee and Cork less so.
Mee is has solid as they come defensively but just last Saturday against Everton showed why Tarks is more likely to be called up purely with the quality of his play leading to our equaliser. Twice just after the equaliser in similar passing positions but on the left Mee hit what should have been simple passes at Wards throat and then one about 8 foot over Wards head and into the stand. Rightly or wrongly fans just don’t accept that low level of technique on the ball at international level.
Cork is likely to miss out because a lot of the regulars for his position are back from injury.

How about Burnley players who’ve played for England in a World Cup finals tournament .. that must be a tiny number?

I just think you meant to write 'Burnley game' instead of 'England game'

I did mean that and I've corrected it, thanks. I thought it was Chelsea but couldn't be certain. I think that was the night when Stan made 11 changes all at one go during the second half.

No problem. Yep, that was the game, pre-season 2001. It wasn't long until we couldn't even fill a bench!

Has Lowton got a chance as well? Behind Walker it's anyone's place to be honest. We don't exactly have a huge number of right backs to choose from either.

Hart should be nowhere near the squad. England's problem in the past has been picking the same old players along with some pretty average management.

Not at all. Simple comment about the committee picking, followed by John Connelly. Nothing personal about anyone. Just about the topic. Then the personal stuff comes in - now yours.
I will refrain from retaliation, other than suggesting you do a self examination of your responses.
