My son is off to Berlin this week, just outside actually -Potsdam.
He'll be there for about six months.
Does anyone live out that way, been there, vistited or have any do's and don't?

Thank you.

Potsdam is lovely and there are some historical places nearby to look around.

The Wansee is where the meeting took place to decide the fate of the Jews and sort out the admin details to ensure maximum effeciency in terms of transport and 'reception' at the death camps.

The Glienike (sp) Bridge is where the exchange of spies took place during the cold war.

Berlin is my favourite City, the transport system is excellent and there is so much to see in and around the City. Hopefully your son will make the most of his time there.

I think this meeting was made into a film. With Kenneth Branagh.

Was called Conspiracy. Think it was a BBC made film.

Been to Berlin a few times with work and have to say it is a good place for a night out.

Berlin is my favourite city in the World. Never felt as safe in a foreign city as I did in Berlin. There is loads to see and do, the people are great, the public transport system is brilliant, excellent nightlife (avoid Berghain, totally overrated) good food & drink and plenty of English speakers if your son isn't 100% fluent in German, but knowing German to a conversational level is advised.

Like most major cities it can be expensive but there are loads of Lidls and Aldis knocking about so should be able to get cheap food and blow out on the weekends.
There is an "alternative pub crawl" which is worth a go even if you live in the city as it's a good laugh and takes you to the lesser seen nightlife spots in the city without the typical "pub crawl" crowd.

It was and Branagh was superb in the role.

How little the human race have learnt from the horror of genocide.

The meeting notes survived the war, and a German filmmaker made it into a film using the exact words as they were said. More chiiling than films like Schinlers List, in a way.

Lived there for six months in 1995.

Great city and a great experience.

I also second Kreuzberg, one of the coolest areas but stay out of there on May 1st when the anarchists smash everything up :)
