Two recognised full backs playing has centre backs. Tarks might get a gig on the left wing later on.

abc for England manager
Re: Football tonight
Whatever happened to playing players in their rightful positions ?
Re: Football tonight
I think Gomez can be considered a CB but it still leaves Walker playing CB. Interesting.

Re: Football tonight
What a farce. Only playing 1 recognised cb and he can't really defend. What is he point of putting Tarks in the squad and then doing that. We deserve to get hammered and part of me hopes we do.

We're going to have so much of the ball with that team selection. Got to make it count, mind, but there's pace all over the place.

Re: Football tonight
So we call up Tarks, Mawson and Maguire and then leave them on the bench to play four full backs in a back five?
Hell's teeth.

Re: Football tonight
Very young back six, though, no matter how you slice it, and playing away from home. Putting on my Sean Dyche cap for a second, perhaps having Walker's international experience within earshot of Stones and Gomez isn't an absolutely terrible idea.
(I'm going to look stupid defending this team selection come 10pm, aren't I?)

Re: Football tonight
Sounds like he has worked closely with Tarks and Mawson and does not think either is up to it. Both those 2 and McQuire must be ****** off. Don't think Walker has ever played in a back 3 before. He could be good in it though, but surely alongside 2 proper defenders and I don't include Stones in that. On the plus side, he must fancy trippier and I don't blame him for that as his crossing is brilliant.
Re: Football tonight
Tarky spent a year on our bench before getting a sniff so I'd be more than a little surprised if he's ****** off at being left on the bench on his first call-up. He'll get on at Wembley, no doubt.

Awful team selection and formation. Not a hope in hell. I shan’t be watching.

One full back in a back three, like the champions Chelsea last season, and two wing backs in a midfield 4, like champions Chelsea last season.Braindead wrote:So we call up Tarks, Mawson and Maguire and then leave them on the bench to play four full backs in a back five?

Re: Football tonight
I'm wondering to what degree people on this thread criticising the team selection are feeling a little bit jilted at Pope and Tarky being left on the bench because an offensive, pacy, high-energy England team is what I've wanted to see for ages and we've now got it.

Ah yeah you've got me there, Champions Chelsea who are struggling to qualify for the Champions League this season and 25 points behind the leaders - great analogy.Walton wrote:One full back in a back three, like the champions Chelsea last season, and two wing backs in a midfield 4, like champions Chelsea last season.

Re: Football tonight
3-0. They haven't qualified and they will give us a leathering.
Then a pasting on Tuesday by a poor team who can't create or score.
We have all been expecting (hoping for?) something different. We ain't allowed to do different. We do the same, whilst ignoring that the same means abject failure. Jordan Henderson wouldn't get a game for us, and he captains?
Southgate/Fabio/Sven/(insert name here).......all incredibly bad. We haven't had an England manager since Sir Bobby Robson.
Edit to answer: Nowt to do with our lads not starting. That would make me immensely proud, but there's just summat not right with England and how we run the national side.
England - and Gareth f*ckin Southgate - can do one.

I honestly think this is the first time I have seen Gomez play. And it’s an England game. Bonkers.
Re: Football tonight
Gomez played well for England in the last international break.

Re: Football tonight
Can’t believe the tragic ‘cheer up Alex McLeish’ chant still makes an appearance. Although it did sound a bit like they were singing Gordon Strachan. Either way, strange.

Need to get Trippier further down the right. More dangerous than Rose as much more accurate.

Hoddle did reasonable as England coach, but you can tell by listening to him that we would be severely limited if he was in charge now.
