Joe Root - What were you doing?

Following virtually two washed out days in New Zealand we had a sniff of a draw to bat out whatever total we were set.

Needing 237 with 3 wickets down and just 3 balls left today Joe Root got hit on the hand and could quite easily have retired hurt and started again tomorrow.

Why did he choose to carry on, clearly in pain and get caught the next bowl on 51? Surely a massive error of judgement and what could cost us the game?

Saying that we are unlikely to bat a full day tomorrow if we had 22 players.

At least we are showing fight second dig but that Root wicket will be decisive yet again Joe looks good getting to 50 and then gets out.
If he is ever too become a top player needs to convert a lot more should have been looking too be batting at lunch time tomorrow.
Would have given the middle/lower order a chance of saving the game.

He probably should have come off with the injury but we couldn't afford to lose his wicket right at the end of the day's play

If he had of retired hurt would he have had too bat at no7 the following day not ideal but better then the current score.

He would have had to wait until the next wicket fell which would have been the third
