Just booked a trip to Zurich and was wondering if any of you guys have ever been and what you would recommend? I love all kinds of things from history and science to getting black out drunk in dive bars.

Don't buy anything, its stupidly expensive.

Depending how much time you have, a train trip to Lucerne would be fun. Scenic journey on amazing coaches. Old town
is amazing. Plenty of good bars etc.

Best value tasty food at the lively main Railway Station. Otherwise stick to the Old Town side of the river.
Beware the Hotel Dignitas.

I did a trip out to Lucerne and it was gorgeous, definitely recommend it.

I loved Bern, and Basel is great too.

Other than in a ramen bar in Basel, I didn't notice the prices to be that bad.

Just stay away from the "Young Boys".

Swimming in the lake if its hot weather.

Very expensive place but lots of impressive sights to see.

I stayed there when I went to watch England in Liechtenstein. Nice place to visit but I was mainly on the ale. Liechtenstein is worth a visit if you get the chance.

I was there this weekend.

The FIFA museum is brilliant and has the actual World Cup in there along with lots of artefacts from different eras.
Old Town is really nice, lots of expensive art shops but great to wander through the winding cobbled streets.
Boat trips along the Lake are nice.
The tram system is really good, cheap too at about 6 quid a day, just hop on and off for a bit of an explore and see the place.
The Letzigrund stadium is quite smart, worth going to a game if there is one (FC Zurich or Grasshopper).
Beer and Food is really expensive, (6 or 7 quid for a pint and starting at around 15-20 quid for a main meal)

I've just done a bit of looking up on prices.

£5/6 for a 500ml craft beer brewed on-site, which to be fair is about what you'd expect in a city over here. I don't know what the prices are like in the Mr Pickwick type places because they're my idea of hell.

Train fares are very reasonable, and there are loads of little offies everywhere selling bottled beer at decent prices too.

I needed pain relief due to toothache a couple of years ago whilst in Montreau

For pain relief I purchased ibubrofen and paracetamol which were about £5 for a box of tablets (rather expensive)

I know Zürich pretty well, a walk by the lake is worthwhile and there are several good museums although you generally have to pay pretty stiff admission. If it's dive bars you want that head along Langstrasse, just west of the train station. You'll also find a few hipper bars and eateries in the side streets around there. As someone else said, you can always buy beers from off-licences and pretty much drink wherever you want if that's your thing.

Did you check out the casino in Montreau, philip? There was a rather famous rock song about it, called "Smoke on the Water".
