He's just an incredible athlete and has absolutely every trait you need to be a top player in the modern game; pace, power, strength, technique and he's even good in the air! I genuinely think he'd be capable of playing in any position on the pitch (ok, maybe not goalkeeper!) due to those attributes.

Messi is brilliant, the original Ronaldo was incredible, Pele and Garrincha weren't bad... but this guy just seems to get better with each year and it's the fact he's still doing it against the best in the world that is the amazing thing. He's not wheeled out by Real against the bottom half of La Liga to score a hatful for the fans, he's still the main man in the Champions League and the best player in the world. Compare him to Rooney for example; Ronaldo is actually older than Rooney. No one can deny how good Rooney was for a good few years at United but he's been on the downward spiral for a few years now. The exact opposite of Ronaldo who just seems to get fitter and hungrier with each year. He's sublime and we're lucky to watch him in our lifetime.
Shows how good Ronaldo was. There are many players with similar or possibly even better natural talent than Ronaldo.

However he showed that the old saying, hard work beats talent is true.

How many players did United have for example who had the same potential and raw ability as Ronaldo but never made it. Either didnt fulfil it or werent committed enough?

Rooney was easily as talented as Ronaldo . However compare the application, dedication and discipline of the two and its evident why one was a very good player and why one is still playing now at the very very top.

Ronaldo has everything. And despite what some say has a great character.

(as for comparing Messi and him - just be grateful they are both around together. In fact the reason they are probably both as good as they are is the competition to outdo each other. Almost as if one cant exist at the level they are without the other!)

Messi is the best. Ronaldo second best. Both incredible football talents. Unfortunately Ronaldo wins the w*nker League hands down. Messi isnt even in that league.

Before the ball had even nestled in the bottom corner last night, you know millions of internet fanboys were firing up their social medias to drone on about who's better.

If you enjoy watching both of these all time greats in the same era, you're probably a football fan. If every single thing they do only has any merit in that it helps your boring little unwinnable squabble with strangers, then I doubt you've ever played the game, been to a match or kissed a girl.

For me Messi is the greatest player to play the game of all time. Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t too far behind. Everyone else that has played the game are a country mile behind these two.

The likes of Pele and Maradona played in a differed era but were not anywhere near this level. If they played now - with modern facilities, diet, training etc - they may well be as good as Messi and Ronaldo. R9 Ronaldo has had the benefit of being retired for 10 years and people remembering him as better than he was. In terms of his champions league performances - the hat trick away at Old Trafford in 2003 aside - he did very little. Nobody has been genuinely in the top two players in the world for more than about 5 seasons unlike Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who have been for 10 years. Enjoy them whilst we can, they are remarkable players.

Alan shearer carried a small unfashionable town team to the prem title against probably the strongest man utd side they ever had. Could ronaldo mk 1 or 2 have done that? Doubtful.

I find it hard to call a player the best when they are performing with the best every game.

By this reckoning we are saying Jamie Vardy is up there with the greats because Leicester’s achievement was far more impressive.

Only been privileged to see him once in Roy Keane's testimonial, United v Celtic. He certainly has the quickest feet i've ever seen. Truly a great player, an all time great, but personally I'd take Messi over him as GOAT.

This is exactly what impresses me. Messi is arguably the most naturally gifted footballer of all time whereas you can see the work and effort Ronaldo has put in to get to the top and stay there. It's very hard to make a call between the two but Ronaldo's exploits in the Premier League, La Liga and at International level means he pips it for me. People have said for years that Messi needs to perform for Argentina on the biggest stage. He's got his chance again this summer. Fingers crossed he delivers!

Ashley Barnes scores a fantastic goal, considering his frame and it is big in Burnley and mentioned elsewhere - Ronaldo scores one which was easier for his frame and the world's raves.

Ashley's is better. Look at the height of his leg!

If that's the yardstick then there's a case that the greatest player of all time is Fernando Torres:

Honours

Chelsea

FA Cup: 2011–12
UEFA Champions League: 2011–12
UEFA Europa League: 2012–13

Spain

UEFA European Championship: 2008, 2012
FIFA World Cup: 2010

Unreal goal, and the test of players like Ronaldo is that they consistently do it on the big stage.

Ronaldo v Messi? Who cares, just enjoy two of the best footballers the world has ever seen in their prime.

Not really. When people discuss the greatest ever they talk about Pele/Maradona who did it in the world cup.

Its time for Messi to step up and deliver. Its ok doing it year after year at your club when you’re surrounded with world class players. He looks lost in internationals.

So again, Fernando Torres.

You clearly didn't read his honours list, in addition to Champions League and Europa League Winners medals he has won a World Cup and TWO European Championships!

Honours list? So what? Torres was in good teams, he didn't look head or shoulders above the rest of that Spanish team, so don't really get the analogy.Whereas Maradona was the stand out individual player at the world cup, Messi has never been, that's the difference.

Hes scored about 40 odd goals since leaving Liverpool. 40 in 7 years. Wowza.

maradona is undoubtably the greatest footballer I have ever seen, and Ronaldo and Messi are in similar category but not quite as good.
agree about the cheating aspect, but cannot disregard such talent as a player. Players like these are very, very, rare.

You are all focusing on the goal and missing the most important event in football history.

A home team applauding the away goal scorer - knowing they are probably out of the champions league

You need to recognise how huge this is - more stunning than any overhead kick FFS

No matter how long Messi plays for there will always be two questions asked:
1) would he be able to be as effective in another league
2) has he done enough at international level

Both those are easily answered with Ronaldo:
1) he won the Premier League three times, The league cup twice, the FA Cup once and the Champions League once with Man Utd
2) Ronaldo is the first player to participate in three European Championship semi-finals and was named in the team of the tournament for the third time. Remember this is with Portugal. They aren't exactly heavyweights of the game yet they've got to three Euro semis and they've won the tournament once. He currently has 81 goals in 149 caps (a better rate than Messi by the way; not by much might I add!).

They're both incredible and we're lucky to watch the game we love with both these guys around at the same time, but I tend to edge towards Ronaldo as the best.

And yet, he has won a World Cup more than Messi or C. Ronaldo and a European Championship more than C. Ronaldo too.

I agree he's garbage but again, if the yardstick is international honours he has more than the two supposed best players in the world put together.
