Just how crafty was he? Did he try and get away with throwing four darts?...... Two hundred and forty!

Best quote about any sports man by the equally great Sid Waddell.

"When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer....Bristow's only 27."

Says it all. A true legend. RIP

How sad, my mate Winston Ashworth who is sadly no longer with us beat Eric in an exhibition match at the Muni in Colne; Winston was well chuffed and Eric was very magnanimous in defeat.

RIP Great Dart Thrower.

I had the good fortune to spend some time with Eric and Maureen Flowers at the 1986 Unipart British Professional Championship. Great company. RIP Eric.

Very sad to hear this.

He is the very reason darts is the spectacle that it is today, thanks to his early early 90s breakaway. An absolute legend of the sport

Character in the darts world but let himself down with the "abuse victims were wimps" comment. Apologised eventually but still....

Heard about this whilst watching the darts last night.

Him and Taylor made darts what it is now. Certainly one of the sporting legends.

An absolute legend of the darts world and a part of my childhood watching darts with my brother.

A good pundit also as Sky took darts to a different level.

His child abuse comments were not something I agree with but ultimately he was vilified for having an opinion that didn’t conform with the expected norm.

It’s ok to be outspoken and have opinions these days, but only if they fit the media agenda.

When you think of darts the name of Eric Bristow is one that immediately comes into your mind. As jdrobbo posted, he made it what it was today.

It is, because as Jim Bowen told us, "you get nothing in this game for 2 in a bed". Terribly sad news to hear last night, he was a giant of the game. Him and the brilliant Sid Waddell are what I remember from watching darts as a kid. Bristow throwing with his little finger cocked, as though he was sipping tea from a bone china cup and Sid with the one liners to add to the drama.

I've never really bought into the fat blokes chucking darts thing being called a "sport" but fair play to the lad, he helped turn a televised pub game into quite a media phenomenon.

Personally, I've never met an overweight darts player that I didn't like. I guess that includes almost all of them.

Actually, eddie, it's that bloke who used to own Leyton Orient FC, Mr. Hearns, who turned darts into the spectacle it is. Personally, I don't get it, except it's another excuse to get snockered, and dress up like Marcel Marceau with your friends.
