My son who is 17 and a decent well behaved young man went to the Manchester arena tonight to see the courteeners, he was wearing his Burnley away shirt under a coat, the security inside the arena spotted the shirt , he was taken to the merchandise stand and forced to buy a t shirt and then made to remove his Burnley shirt , this was then confiscated and binned,
I have checked the terms and conditions on the web site and no where does wearing a footy shirt deemed against the rule,
He repeteadly asked for the management but was told the shirt had been binned,
So be aware the security staff at the m.e.n obviously think they are a low to them selves , so that’s a away shirt gone and he had to buy a tour shirt or he would have been evicted from the arena,
If any body knows where we stand legally , any help would be appreciated

That sounds very odd. You can’t force anyone to buy anything. Proving it would be hard mind.

I'm somewhat relieved. Having read the title I thought he'd been attacked. It's over 30 years ago now but I can speak from experience of having been mugged by some thugs.

But what's happened here is just not right at all. I'd certainly be taking this up with the venue or whoever is responsible. They can't force anyone to buy anything.

Ah the courteeners. What a load of **** that lot are. Talentless wasters that are unknown outside manchester. Re-recorded their debut album and re released it to rip off fans to those that dont know who they are.

They may be a load of **** to you but I'll think you'll find they are far from unknown outside Manchester. Some of their stuff is excellent. The shirt removal story is horrendous - probably some Rovers supporting pr1ck of a steward with small club syndrome.

I think the title of the thread needs changing.

My first response would be to contact the arena and mention trading standards in the conversation. Keep an email trail.

Seems an extremely over the top ‘security’measure compared to the flares that will have got through and the type of substance that will have caused ridiculously long tailbacks at the toilet cubicles.

The only thing that could maybe justify their reasoning is them being on red alert for football related unrest after the Manchester Derby - the Courteeners definitely attract, shall we say, some ‘characters’!

Hope he gets a replacement and despite the incident he enjoyed the gig. They are an excellent band.

Like someone says earlier in the thread contact Liam Fray on twitter, he's quite active on there.

I would think that they’re gonna have to replace the shirt and refund the purchased your shirt unless they can demonstrate that they provided sufficient information to inform attendees that football shirts weren’t permitted. That should be provided at point of purchase but if it said ‘terms and conditions apply’ then you should refer to those to check. I’d be slapping it on social media if this wasn’t stated and they refuse to sort it.

The merchandising area should be covered by CCTV.

I didn’t realise there was a dress code to watch a band?

The whole stadium should be covered by CCTV, especially the entrances (which is where i suppose he was first stopped) and if it isn't there should be one almighty $hit storm in view of recent goings on there.

MEN is a shite venue, I’ve purposely seen events in other city’s instead of going there.

Playing Devils Advocate, the security staff have every right to determine if the presentation of a person could be deemed inflammatory. A Burnley football shirt in a foreign arena could be deemed so. It only takes one idiot to pick a fight. Having decided that the shirt could not enter, the suggestion is that the nearest alternative is available via the merchandise sales area. No doubt, if there was a shop open round the corner, that would be a cheaper option.

The 'Binning' of the shirt is not appropriate from the security. It should have been made clear where the item could be reclaimed, on leaving the arena.

Suggest a legitimate claim for reimbursement could be made. Like for like - £20.

Thanks for sharing. I've put it up on FB for the benefit of others but I'd be surprised if it's not a horsefiddling neanderthal abusing power.

I was there myself. Obviously wasnt the fashion police... Burnley shirts banned but flares allowed! I'll get my coat. Actually I wont they took that and binned it.

Obviously they were Manure fans and Burnley are now seen as serious rivals ! Had it been a Rovers shirt they would have given him a Dunces hat and made him stand in the corner of the stage.

OP, you should get in touch with that guy who's son was mugged. They went to the same gig and have similar stories. You can have them corroborate one another's stories to the police.

Absolutely. I think it's disgusting behaviour. I was just posting for information.

Went to a gig at M.E.N at the back end of last year. Mate of mine had a rucksack with him, hadn’t read the notice with the tickets. The security staff’s answer was that he’d have to a) store it in a locker at Manchester Victoria (which don’t exist) or b) throw it away. In an area with no bins. Which would mean an unattended rucksack being left outside a gig.

Now, daft not to read the notice with the tickets, but the response from the security team at M.E.N was laughable to say the least. Suggesting that someone throw away any of their possessions to enter a gig is ridiculous, but a football shirt is new levels of ridiculous, especially since they allowed people in with pyros

Just to clarify, they took away the shirt and although he ask for it to be stored and returned later , he was told it was being binned as they don’t have the facility to store items, He was given the option of leaving the venue or buy a shirt from the merchandise stall, he tried to reason with the supervisor, but she was adement that footy shirts were banned, I have check the website and it doesn’t mention it, I have tried to contact the venue and also sent them a message on social media.. it

It's quite common for things with a high 'lad' audience to be no football colours. It would usually state it on the ticket T&Cs.

Why didn't the security suggest that the young man wear his newly purchased t-shirt over his football top? PLUS explaining as to why his own shirt was not allowed.
