Kevin Long..
Kevin Long..
With Ben Mee out, and everyone quite chilled out about Long coming in, am I the only one a little concerned he will be playing probably the last 6 games?
I've seen comments a long the lines of "he's been solid", "not worried, he's been excellent when called upon", however I think he's been quite average.
He often gets sucked in to making a mus timed challenge, and with the masters of cheating here on Saturday, I can't help feeling he will again give away silly free kicks and possibly a penalty, which will cost us.
Commentators curse please...

He's not as good as Ben Mee, but he's been decent enough. I'm more worried about what happens if him or Tarkowski get injured.

Nope. Not concerned at all.
Re: Kevin Long..
This weekend Charlie Taylor is CB, LB and Winger Cover.
But it's Ok, we have 4 goal keepers.
We would have to be seriously unlucky to get 1 of them riled out at this stage if the season, although it couod be worth Maguire or another giving Tarky a leg breaker on 90 mins, strengthens his chance of going the world cup, and Leicester finishing in Europe, I wouldn't put it past someone.

Not in any way concerned.
Kev is no more likely to bugger things up the other 10 Clarets on the pitch.
He's an experienced player who's come in when required and done a better than good job.

There is a reason our last four managers have kept him on. He can play.
No worries on my part.

It's clear that we need a good CB in. Mee seems to have this recurring problem and whilst Long is a decent enough player we need another good CB

Re: Kevin Long..
Kevin long is a decent defender with international experience. I can't get my head around the idea that he is any more likely to give away a free-kick or penalty than any of our other defenders.
my only concern is that, if Mee leaves, we will need two top class central defenders in one transfer window.

Good to see Long getting his well deserved chance. Dyche going for Long with Mee not willing to sign a new contract and rightly so. No one bigger than the club

I'm always concerned when one of the Four Tops is out.
Long has done well when he's come in though, so it's not quite brown underpants time.

Re: Kevin Long..
We've all got to admire Kevin Long. Always the 3rd choice CB. Always the guy who has to "fill in" on either right or left depending on who is out injured (or suspended).
When required he's always done a "decent"job and now he's getting a run of games he's started to deliver at the other end: an assist for Cork's goal against Watford last week; a great goal this week.
We've no need to work about Kevin Long.
Of course, we need to make sure we have other CB options especially if anyone moves on.

It makes me wonder. Can we take any defender or goalkeeper, literally anyone, and train him up under Sean Dyche to England standard? Trippier, Keane, Tarkowski, Long (OK - Ireland), Pope, Heaton. Even Mee, though he's consistently overlooked. None of them were considered potential England players when we signed them, though you could have made a case that Keane, Mee and Trippier had the potential if they got the chance.

Re: Kevin Long..
He did really well today, kept his focus, did the basics ever so well.
He's a bit slow on the turn (and that would be exposed in a less rigid set up), and I'm not sure he reads the game and anticipates things as well as Tarky or Mee do, but he's a match for anyone for pace in a straight line and when the game is in front of him, he's commanding. That header for his goal was as emphatic an attacking header as we've seen at Burnley in years - there wasn't too much pace on the cross and he got terrific power into it.

Re: Kevin Long..
Agree with doing the basics well where at times Tarkowski got a bit carried away trying to flick it one which nearly led to a goal.

Roy Keane scouting him today, for Ireland. I can't see Ireland dropping Duffy or Clark but a 3 at the back might work.

Re: Kevin Long..
He was very very good today.
I've said before that I've doubted him in the past and was wrong.
If we'd just signed him, after his preformance today, I'd be delighted.
A Premier League defender, as I've also said before I'm sure.
Pope was man of the match today. But on any other day it would have been Long.

I thought he was better than Tarks today, he's had some decent games and some terrible ones, today was probably his best game in a Burnley shirt though.

Think people are getting carried away after today.
There is a reason why KL has made so few starts over a long period and that’s because he’s not good enough.
You have to be good on the ground as well as in the air.

If it’s a physical battle then he tends to come out on top. Got the better of one of the more physical forwards in the league, Deeney, last week.
He’s developed very well under Dyche. Well done to him.

Re: Kevin Long..
I have to disagree. Defensively I thought we were terrific today. In my opinion, the issue was that the forwards weren’t retaining possession well enough. It’s all about opinions/perspective though.Top Claret wrote:I thought we were all over the shop today at the back. Kevin and Tarks need to build an understanding. He has come on massively under Dyche. Why any negative comments about is baffling to me. Hes a proper player. Wouldn't want to start a season with Kevin as starting CB but as a back up, he has been nothing but a rock. So impressed.
