Moving away from British Gas

It was only recently at the end of last year that they notified me they were upping their prices for gas and elec (I'm on duel fuel). Now, they're putting it up once again. They're basically asking me to move away to another supplier, offering a better deal.
Has anybody moved away from British Gas and found a better deal? A compare online suggests Solarplicity.

I'm with British Gas but looking at options given the price hike.

The price hike is something to do with the regulator being concerned with the number of folk on Standard Variable pricing.
I believe they plan to fine firms who have a certain % of customers on the variable pricing, this price hike will push folk off variable onto a fixed rate solving the problem, or those who stay will pay for any fine indirectly as result of the price hike.

Sign up to Martin Lewis (Martins money tips) cheap energy club. Great deals and told when you can get a better deal. I switch all the time. You get ripped off otherwise.

I guess it's important to always make sure there's no fee to leave? I see a lot have a £30 exit charge.

Go through the comparison sites but personally, I’d avoid the smaller companies.

What a scandal so much for encouraging competitive prices.

We have just switched from Sainsburys Energy (British Gas) using Uswitch, gone to Ovo saved 40 quid a month on dual fuel, no issues thus far apart from getting back the money that I was in credit from BG

I moved from British Gas to Sainsbury’s energy as they were around 15% cheaper 2 years ago.
Plot twist - Sainsbury’s energy IS British Gas selling under the Sainsbury’s brand name. The website is the same and no new equipment was even needed as it runs off the same smart meter.

Just moved my dads from British Gas to EDF saving him £60 a month on what he was paying for both gas and electricity.

I switch providers every year and always get a good deal and have never experienced any problems whatsoever, mind you, I won't have a smart meter and some companies are now trying to insist that you must have one to get the better deals.

My energy bills are probably pretty low compared to most, but I live on my own. Last year my account says for gas, I paid £327.73 - 5928 kWh.
The ML Energy Saving Club has just popped up with EBICo - estimating £88 per year. A saving of £241 a year. That seems a bit too bloody good!

anyone who doesn't switch regularly and stays on the standard variable tariff is a muppet, or has too much money so they don't care. i have just switched back to BG from First utility and that was after scottish power etc etc. the process is seamless and painless and they threw in 12 months boiler breakdown insurance too! Compare the Meerkat. Simples!

I looked back and in the last four years I’ve switched from British Gas to EDF to Sainsbury’s (British Gas effectively), to OVO to British Gas to AVRO.
Switching is **** easy, the minute a cheaper deal becomes worthwhile I switch.

I'm a switcher, currently paying £73/month with Avro energy for dual fuel in a three bedroom semi. Funnily enough I've just had an email from the cheap energy club about potential deals that could be cheaper. I'll probably follow it up later in the week.

To answer the original question. Yep, changed suppliers many a time. The smaller non-big 5 suppliers have been excellent imho. Shop around, there’s bargains to be had!
