Remember this day particularly...I was born in Preston and had been a North End fan al my life. When I married and moved to Padiham I changed my allegiance to the Clarets although always following PNE results. So it was with mixed feelings that I went to the game with my wife. I loved it when the Norht End team lined up a guard of honour for Burnley when they came on the pitch...and the last five minutes were nerve wracking although both teams had realised that a draw suited both of them and merely kept possession without attempting to score. The final result suited me perfectly!! Would still love to see PNE in the Prem and playing Burnley once again.

To be honest, I never thought that season would ever be bettered. It was special, only four defeats all season, and promotion back to the top flight with some fantastic footballers such as Keith Newton, Dobbo, Taffy and Frank Casper. Then came these last five years, but I still recall 1972/73 with real fondness.

A great season,CT. Missed quite a number of games I have to admit due to it being my final year as a student in London. But some wonderful memories too. That early 4-1 win over a fancied Aston Villa sowed the seed that something might be on but I think it was the 1-0 win v Sheff. Wed that began to give us real hope. Like today it was a 'team' ethos which spread to the terraces and so made us extremely difficult to beat. 45 years though.........that is frightening.

Yes most of who attended have run the course or in the final furlong!!

Not sure how I managed it but I didn't miss a game that season - the win at Hillsborough was an easy one for me, I was in Sheffield at the time. Some train journeys that season, the worst of which I think was the Friday night to Swindon.

Oh yes remember it well, me and two mates decided to "thumb it" back to Skipton after the match, ended up walking all the way to past the Aerospace place before a nice old couple stopped and gave us a lift!

I have to thank my Dad for driving us to every home game and half of the away games that season, and the folowing one, he and my step mother would go shopping while my 2 brothers and I went to the games. Preston was a highlight for sure, fantastic atmosphere.

73 is the season I started supporting The Clarets. What a team that was!

It had escaped me that it was on this exact date.
Nice one CT for the reminder..loved that season as much as any other promotion season.

As we did for every away game in the early 70's my dad & I (and sometimes my Uncle) always stood or sat in an home section of the ground.
I think my dad said he felt I was safer....

For this game we were stood to the right of the goal in the friendly home section.

It's difficult to compare era's but the '73 season kicked started the best 2 seasons I've had as a lifelong fan. Not taking anything away from the present, it's quite remarkable whats happened but the mid 70's team was certainly a joy to watch. It's also different watching as an impressionable teenager to someone who is rapidly approaching pension age.

Starting from April 1972 when we won the last six games of the season, it was fantastic stuff for about three years before the decline set in. This was a time when we signed very few players but a time when during that period we sold Martin Dobson, Geoff Nulty and Leighton James while also losing Mick Docherty, Frank Casper & Paul Fletcher to injuries. We'd no one to replace them. But it really was a brilliant period for us. And I agree, although slightly older, I was 21 when we won the promotion, it is different when you are younger.

Happy memories of that season and the next few although I dread to think how many miles I covered following the Clarets.
I was stationed at RAF Locking, near Weston-super-Mare for until March 1973 and then I moved to RAF Catterick. I used to drive up to Bomarsund, Northumberland to pick up Billy Ingham's parents, take them to the match and then return them home, stay at my mother-in-law's and then travel back on the Sunday. Thank goodness for 3 o'clock kick offs on Saturdays.
They were great days and that day at Deepdale it was great to see the look of pride on Clara Ingham's face --a joy to behold. Sadly, all gone now RIP

I told my parents I was going to play football at Towneley with my friends as as a ten year old there wasn't a cat in hells chance they'd let me go. Went with mates older brothers who paid. Still remember the day.

I was 14...went nice and early with my brother on the train from Nelson. It really was an amazing day. UTC

I was on the ten to ten train that day to make sure I got there on time.

It was like one long party that day.

It was another of those games played after the official league season had ended. Sunderland, a 2nd division side like us unexpectedly won the FA Cup beating world champions,Leeds and a few days later were beaten 3-0 at Roker Park by QPR.

QPR won 8 of their last 10 matches...very impressive for us to be Champions...great season - lovely attacking football with only 4 defeats
(also I think Adamson only used 14 players all season...is that correct?)

It was my 24 th birthday that day.Still a season ticket holder 45 years later.

I was on Deepdale that day with my sister and Dad. I Only missed one game that season and that was the Middlesbrough away game, were we drew 3-3 after being 3 down

What a season and what a way to secure the 2nd division championship. I was in the Deepdale hotel before the game and ended up on the pitch with thousands more clarets. Great memories.

What a shock. Both teams got the point they needed !! Great season though and yes I was there as a twenty something year bold. Cant believe its 45 years ago

Just looking at the appearances in post 39 - we only made 14 substitutions all season. I know it was only one then but that's 28 games where we didn't make a change.

I went on a bus or coach, I am fairly certain my memory isn't playing tricks on me? We had a window put through on our bus as we left Preston on the way back. Didn't see much of the game as I wasn't tall enough, spent the whole game on my tip toes. As previously mentioned it does sort of age you and stand by for some of us remembering our last European adventure too which I absolutely loved.

I went to Deepdale on a coach that day and said to everyone there was nothing to worry as it would be a draw. I was in the sea of Claret and Blue in the so-called Preston end. The game itself could have been ended after an hour or so as it ceased to be a competition of any kind. I think they were taking turns at possession. I think it happened because of being neighbours though because I thought the same might happen on Saturday at Stanley but obviously it didn't.

I went on the bus with my mate who's stood next to me in the picture, about 9/10 rows from the front I will always think that was the most obvious fixed game ever, it suited Lancashire football it suited me as well. utc.
