I’ve got a Haibike. All the fun of cycling without the dread of hills. Was out on it today over by coal clough wind farm and the hill out past the Kettledrum is doable. I’d struggle to get up there on my ‘analogue’ bike.

The best description is that it’s like having some extra gears for the really bad climbs. I come home knowing I’ve ridden a bike, especially around the Burnley area where hills are a fact of life

My neighbour got one for his wife so that she can keep up with him when he goes out on his road bike. I had a go, and it was excellent. I took a big hill outside our house and it really was effortless.

Echo what Colburn Claret says. My Mrs has got a Raleigh e bike. Means we can go out on rides together although I'm now struggling to keep up!

I got one last summer after having heart bypass surgery. Basically it enables me to do hills which I couldn’t do on a normal bike but on the flat the assistance is minimal. It’s the only way I can cycle realistically. I’m a massive fan.

Volt have a good range and I’d recommend them for quality and service.

I’m certainly seeing more and more of them as I ride around on my entirely self propelled bike. One came cruising by me as I cycled up Cragg Vale to Blackstone Edge, the other day. I really had to stop myself from shouting, “Cheat!” at them.

They are horses for courses, though. I can see the attraction if they’re going to take you to places where you wouldn’t go without them. I’d fear getting too comfortable on one of them, mind. I bet it’s hard to return to complete self propulsion, once you’ve got used to the electric assistance.

Not at all LB. For a start evokes are heavy, mine is 21kg with battery attached, and on the minimal setting it’s just like a normal bike. The assistance allows me to tackle hills including some I’d never think of trying on a normal bike. I certainly get a good workout without killing myself.

Absolutely love mine. Can commute to work without getting too sweaty. Can adjust how much electrical assistance you get as you ride. It is a heavy bike so when set to zero assist it is hard work. I now ride where I want and don’t plan ahead to avoid hills where I needed to get off and push up beforehand. I am nearly 16 stone and 59 years old and it has revolutionised my cycling. They’re not cheap but I save a lot of petrol by leaving the car at home. Range for me is about 20-25 miles but you can eak that out more by using less “assistance”. Call me a cheat if you like, I don’t care.

A few Monday’s ago, having tackled the Long Causway from the Kettledrum. You don’t realise how steep the climb is in a car. Worth the effort, mind.

Coming down from black stone edge into Littleborough(after cycling up the hell that is Cragg Vale) is a real treat.

I've not been there for years. Don't live around there no more.

Stoodley pike used to be a favourite ride of mine, also round Widdop was nice.

Cheat

Theoretically mine will do 80 miles on a full charge, but I suspect that’s calculated in a flat area. In reality it’s not that much but I’ve done 40 easily with minimal assistance. It’s a good workout regardless of the motor and they are getting better as the tech improves.
