Internet access in and around The Turf

I'm on giffgaff (o2) and during the season I've tried to access the internet on my mobile in and around the turf, but it has been none existent. Yet my brother (EE) and dad (Virgin Mobile - which is usually crap) have been able to access the internet.

Is/Was it just me or has anyone else on giffgaff/o2 had the same problems?

Thanks

I changed from o2 to ee for that reason ..o2 was terrible coverage at the turf and at work ...EE is better no but not brilliant at the turf ...best coverage I had at Burnley was I.D which is car phone warehouse own provider which runs off the back of 3 network

Why are you taking a tablet to the game? I can understand a phone but a tablet?!

When you're on a piggyback company such as Tesco/GiffGaff they give priority to the main customers first, such as O2 (or whoever they are piggybacking off) at least that's how I think it works.

Like others have said, why the fck take a tablet on a footie ground?

Just stay at home and watch it there.
And if you're doing other things ont' tablet, you cant really be interested in the game.

EE is pretty rapid throughout, with the exception of the middle five or six minutes during half time.

I'm not Three and I think it's abysmal. (Sit in disabled) My theory is 15 to 20k of mobile phones all wanting to access the net at the same time and the network's just can't cope.

I personally enjoy the 2 hour ish period when my phone isn't pinging every few seconds.

That’s weird jd, I’m on EE and can’t get a thing for most of the game, at half time or after the game until I’m well away from the ground!

It's not just the turf moor vicinity, we used to have a pre match slurp in the Forresters before it closed and reception there was crap. As is the town centre in general.

Its more to do with the fact 1000's of people are trying to access the internet at the same time in a small vacinity. Nobody's connection will be good.

Been the same for a few years on’t turf with O2. I’ve found if you turn 4G off while in the ground it works a treat though as there isn’t too many people using 3G on grounds that are trying to access data on their phones.

Very simple. Thousands of devices in one area trying to connect via 4G

Switch to 3G and you may have a better experience

If anybodys lucky enough to be sat close to the corporate boxes you may be able to connect to the WIFI, if somebodys willing to share the password that is ;)

I'm on EE and I can't access anything in and around the Turf on a match day.

It won’t be that late no until most grounds have a paid service, surely. I’d pay for a decent connection at the game to pick up the scores etc.

Don't think have free wifi now at Football League grounds? I think something was introduced ahead of this season.

I'm on O2 and get a signal anywhere in the UK, except Turf Moor!! :( The signal is a bit hit and miss.

I am one of those people who like to use my mobile to check other matches, or to see how far we have moved up (or occasionally) down the table throughout the match.

Free WiFi within the ground would be fantastic!

Given how poorly free WiFi works in a pub when it's busy I don't think it's doable.

They need to place some transmitters in the ground like they do at bigger stadiums.

We're all contained in a massive concrete and steel shell, possibly couldn't be worse.

Only need to look at the Offcom coverage checker to see a small rectangle of no coverage bang on Turf Moor. Same as any ground without dedicated transmitters.

I have a dual SIM phone and 3 is indeed the best for half time scores, my second SIM is free on freedompop(they use three) so I just switch to that.

There are planned upgrades to the network that may help but really it's up to the providers and the club to sort out transmitters in the stadium.

Over here Huawei installed scores of wifi routers / broadcasters at Sparta and the wifi is great as a result, even with circa 15k crowds. Could be an opportunity for a PL-wide sponsorship maybe

There's an O2 mast on the cantilever beams of the Jimmy Mac.

The problem is the number of people trying to use their data in the same area. The masts struggle with such a large number of concurrent connections and lots of those connections will be data heavy applications.

If you've seen Chris Boden's wifi woes this season I wouldn't expect any wifi solution to be much better either...

City provide free public WiFi at the Ethiad.

I logged into it for our FA cup game there and it still connected automatically when I when I took my u8 team to their champions league game against Basel

Better get the category 12 and 16 modems out fast then.

Any info on where you've seen the mast provides O2?

A sticker on the hardware inside the stadium.

But mastdata.com also tells you what is there. There's some Vodafone masts too.

Thanks! Offcom stated the service providers no longer had to give them info about where their transmitters were but it's good there seems to be an alternative source.

It's ridiculous then that EE and 3 are better at the Turf then given they don't even have transmitters there.

The bottleneck must either be at a modem or server level then, be interesting to know if in general in burnley at half time if the towns data general goes to pot just the same as us fans in the stadium.

Not having an antenna directly at the site may help actually as the traffic may be split between nearby antennas.

The bottleneck will be at the antenna. The only way to fix it would be to install some sort of distributed antenna system in the area around the Turf.
