Tarky, by far the best CB in england this season and not even taken

He's a reserve, but what a joke

Sadly I feel Ben Mee's injury has cost him his place, we've been all over the shop the last half a dozen games defensively.

He’s not the best CB in England otherwise he would have gone .

Congratulations to Nick Pope. Very much deserved.

Is it just me or are we a bit light in numbers in midfield?

Show what a season we have had to have one in for sure, and two possibles.

Someone on twitter just said only five survivors from 2014, which shows that Southgate is determined to be a new broom.

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland, Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope.

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gary Cahill, Fabian Delph, Phil Jones, Harry Maguire, Danny Rose, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker, Ashley Young.

Midfielders: Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson, Jesse Lingard, Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Forwards: Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Jamie Vardy, Danny Welbeck.

Stand-by: Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski, Lewis Cook, Jake Livemore and Adam Lallana.
Young can play left wing, Jones can play CDM if needed ( but hopefully not), Delph is also a CM originally before this season.
Some versatility there.

Yes I was just going through it now and realising there are a few who can play multiple positions. Phew.

Wouldn't worry so much if Tarkowski is reserve, you can place your bets now on Jones getting injured before the world cup.

Not much wrong with that squad. Welbeck has a very good record for England. Guessing Hart said a thanks but no thanks to being on standby if Heaton is there.

15 in 37 for Welbeck for England. Almost 1 in 2 is a strong record.

Delighted for Nick, and despite only being on standby that Heats hasn't been forgotten.

A shame for Tarks, but he hasn't looked as good since his first call up. He played excellent in that game, but he hasn't been the same since. Wether thats down to changing sides, missing Ben, trying too hard, I don't know. Harder to take given that Jones and Cahill, who have been out of the picture, have been selected ahead of him. I'm sure it isn't going to be his only chance though.

Guessing the Cahill one would be the fact he's regularly played in a back 3 too.

Only 5 of the 23 play for teams outside the "big 6" so much for picking players on form rather than who they play for.

You'd have a point if Maguire (who is in) had ended the season well, instead he was part of a defence that conceded 13 goals in it's last 4 games.

The three keepers & 2 Leicester players.

Heard a stat on the radio yesterday, accross the premier league there's only around 30% of the players for Southgate to select from.

Given he'd barely played a Premier League game before this season, even being on stand by is a fabulous achievement for Tarks, so good on him, even he'll be disappointed not to have made the squad. Unfortunately, his performances over the last month has suggested he's not as comfortable on the left as on the right, which will have counted against him. Also, apart from his inexperience, Keane's experience at Everton may not have helped his cause - there's a perception Burnley defenders excel because of the system and can be exposed out of it.

Fabulous news for Pope, and well deserved from the most-improved player in the land this season.

Also something notable for Heaton. Despite being injured since September, he's still on standby, which emphasises firstly what a good bloke he is (I imagine that's why he's still ahead of Hart), and how highly Southgate rates him as a keeper. Probably confirms that but for injury, chances are he'd be going to Russia as first choice.

A bit of a headache for Dyche in keeping Pope and Heaton happy for another year or so, but its magnificent to have so many players in the mix.

There is a real lack of options agreed, I would probably have just picked the 3 of Kane, Vardy & Rashford and picked Wilshere instead if it meant we can avoid seeing a side with both Dier & Henderson line up in it

He wasn't shifted defensive partners, or sides to accomodqate a championship defender though. Tarky was babysitting and thinking for 2 defenders at once, and his performances showed that.

Partnerships and continuity shouldn't be underestimated in the defensive unit, him and Ben Mee had a fantastic understanding.
Sadly Tarky's was disrupted in a few different areas, and I'd imagine should it not have been, he would have been going to Russia.

About the same number of league goals he's scored in 4yrs.
So is he picked for his England form or league form?

He'll have to now.

Had the best chance to give him game time with the last friendlies, seems odd to have not played him then but still gone on to select him.

Possibly the only real chance of doing so, is letting Pope go out on loan for 12 months, as long as the team is in the premier league, and he will be number 1. It is a win win for both us and the players. He has a 3 year deal i think, theres no need to rush things.
Nice head ache to have, but not beyond posability that he could move to the likes of Wolves, Cardiff, Villa, Newcastle, Watford and make them stronger.

Never understand how Tarky & Mee's defensive partnership can be overlooked at international level.
Why not have a ready built defensive unit that plays week in week out, surely it would make life easier and the defence more solid.

If they were playing together at one of the big 6 they would be nailed on starters for England.

I’m not surprised about Tarks to be honest. On the right side of Ben Mee he looks world class. On the left of Long he looks like he should be playing for a small League One club, like Blackburn.

He’s been pants this past 4-6 weeks.

It's like Drinkwater and Vardy.

There was no point bringing Drinkwater to the Euros if he wasn't going to play with Vardy... Which he never did.

No, Hendrick plays in the number 10 role, not at CB.
I say it as I see it, trying to blame Hendrick would be ridiculous, I think you may just have an agenda, give the lad a break.

I fully agree

But Mee being out has had zero effect on Tarky or his performances some will say....
