Yep, the place you hear it from can make a difference. It's all down to frequencies.

I hear a combination of both, something like 'Yaurel'. Mr. spades is adamant that it is Yanny.

For the record, I heard distinctly “laurel” on my PC using headphones but definitely heard “yanny” when playing it on my phone. It really can’t be just related to the equipment used to listen though, as my other half would swear that it was the other way round...!

This news story is one of a trend of stories about insanity. It is a collusion in making everyone else ill.

The dead pan way in which a nonsensical story is related, for example there may be a news story about a confusion of when to use 'and' and 'hand' in a sentence, as if there were a confusion. Obviously there is no audible connection between the words 'laurel' and 'yanny.'

It's just a gimmick with differing pitches to see who can hear what, it's not a trick, conspiracy, ploy or scheme by the government.

What makes you so convinced of your 'no conspiracy' theories? It's ALL a conspiracy.

If someone hears 'yanny' when someone says 'laurel' then they are ill and vice versa.

In art they have psychology tricks where opposing things are melded together and the brain gets confused. They fact that the story about 'yanny and laurel' is going around on the BBC website, is proof enough of a conspiracy. It is the equivalent of distracting a giant panda with sugared water, whilst they take away its infant to be weighed etc.

No, it's to do with hearing. You might as well say that hearing tests where some people can hear high pitched sounds and others can't, are a conspiracy.

People with good hearing (especially the young) can hear the high pitches and get the sound "Yanny". Or so they tell me. People like me who don't get the high pitches can hear "Laurel" so obviously that there seems no possible chance of confusion. It's an optical illusion for the ears, whatever that would be called - an otical illusion, perhaps?

Heard both now. Yesterday it could only 100% be Laurel in a deep male voice. Heard it from a few sources and it seemed crazy that anybody could hear anything different.I mean it was so obviously Laurel

Heard it this morning on a different site and it's 100% Yanny in a more robotic higher pitched voice.

Freaks you out when you hear something different

Strangely, I heard Laurel very clearly on Sky news and Yanny just as clearly when I listened to it again later on the BBC news HD channel.

Anyone ever wondered that they are playing two different clips, and only pretending they are the same.
When you hear Yanny, it's because it is, and the same with Laurel.

My right ear struggles with high frequency sounds due to a youthful heavy metal accident.

I hear "yanny" with my left ear that can hear high frequencies, "laurel" with my right (listening through headphones and swapping ears). I hear "laurel" when I use both.

Listening to that Vox recording I can only hear Laurel

Say the two words to yourself in with your accent, they are both so different I’m at a loss at how they can be confused.

Unless it’s a different voice saying the same word in a different accent.

Resting on your laurel(s)

Resting on your yanny(s)

Different.

I had considered this until I played it to my other half who insisted it was Laurel when I could hear yanny - but that was after I could hear Laurel on a different device (but from the same link)

I think it's both being said at the same time, and it's the frequency your brain picks up which decides which one you hear. Different devices can mean slightly different frequencies, which means you may hear one using your phone and another hearing it on your computer.
